I've met, spoken to, and did IT support for Rick Cohen personally. I work for one of his companies. Honestly (and there have been articles and interviews conducted about this) one of the most humble and quiet billionaires. He owns the largest grocery distribution company in the nation and doesn't even have his company's freight trucks branded. He prefers to stay out of the spotlight and lives a very (relatively) modest life.

I plan on moving to Texas in the near future to start a business. This is very interesting to see. I believe Texas actually has the most fortune 500 companies and the highest number of billionaires.

Most hecto millionaires and up are pretty stand up people. Look at the charity efforts of Gates and the Koch brothers to see how much positive impact they make.
I've gone through two grad schools in style because of the generous donations of billionaires.
I've got the dick so I make the rules.

Texas has lighter regulations and taxes. Definitely more conducive to entrepreneurship.

- Texas is indeed home to the most fortune 500 companies
- Texas actually has far fewer billionaires than you might think, but an astounding number of millionaires. There are just simply too many people that kill it in Texas only to pull up stakes and move to a nicer place (for example, Beverly Hills or some other nice place).

$80 Billion..
I don't know what I would do with all that money. Sounds like more of a burden than a good thing.

It's an interesting map. I wouldn't necessarily change states based on this map to start a business. Some are more business friendly than others for sure. It's more important to locate where you have good infrastructure and experienced hires available. Having friends and family close by doesn't hurt either.

Texas has no state income tax. You have to pick and choose where you build your business though. Property taxes can vary.

Whatsup with the income being so high in the North Pole of Alaska? I didn't think anyone even lived there!
look at virgina, kentucky and tennessee (well except for nashville). Appalachia is a total twilight zone of poor rural hillbillies.

It's been like that for over 200 years!
When people broadly categorize groups as "whites" you should remember the differences between the different ethnic groups it can be vast. Appalachia has been pretty damn poor for quite a long time.

yes, a great counter argument any time 'white privilege' comes up. The people and run down homes that you can see on the backroads around here are in the 'a person lives there?!' category.

It would be much worse if it wasn't for JFK and LBJ.
Speaking more broadly about the South, I remember watching True Detective earlier this year which is set in Louisiana's Acadiana, and being shocked that such a level of poverty could still exist in a developed Western country in 2014. Even basic infrastructure seemed to be lacking, or crumbling.
cool link, I was familiar with the TVA and new deal type stuff but not much of the ARC under JFK. There are guys in their 50s at the country barber shop I go to that talk about not having indoor plumbing or electricity up until close to their teens here in east TN.
The america that can be seen by taking the time to travel to out of the way counties or pre-interstate road routes is fascinating, especially if a person is into 'americana' type stuff....rural appalachia and the rural south being prime examples.

I noticed there are 3 states where the wealthiest person is named Walton and each is worth over 30 billion, and yet Walmart continues to pay very low wages. How much more does this family have to make before they start paying their employees a living wage?

People on the north slope of Alaska get dividends from the oil companies, that's why the median income is so high. Massive oil fields there, and native corporations get a payout.
