The Ido Portal Data Sheet: Multi-Talented and Inspiring Movement Teacher

Instead of a TL;DR, I'll just put this at the top, why should you explore the below info more? Many people can see benefits for fixing/preventing injuries, improving multi-functional strength, flexibility and mobility, as well as opening themselves up to fun and challenging new ways of training. There is a lot of interesting stuff here about physical culture, martial arts, and fitness philosophies from around the world. Also, I'd be interested in hearing from any members who have done Ido's online coaching, attended one of his workshops, or have tried some of his workouts.

This Data Sheet has been a long time coming after multiple requests, and while it went through various revisions, I'm satisfied enough to finally post it now. I will add any updates in future comments or help where I can with answering questions.

Ido Portal is a hard man to clearly define, so first I suggest reading his short bio: http://www.idoportal.com/ido

A decent introductory video with a bit of his philosophy, as well as comments on the Paleo Diet, CrossFit, Vegetarians, etc.

While I know the term "Red Pill" is getting applied to an increasing variety of areas beyond Game, I would argue Ido is one of the best examples of Red Pill philosophy towards physical training, health, teaching, etc.

For example, compared to many other high profile names he regularly calls out BS he sees in the mainstream world, will post videos of his students to show the clear results from his methods, and even put his blood work on the web years ago when the subject of his diet came up. He encourages people to travel, get out of their comfort zones while always learning, and yes, he's a big fan of fat shaming.

Ido with some of his students and footage of their training:

He has been building his body of knowledge for many years, as he travels the world learning from a variety of disciplines and mentors, and has built a network of like minded people while teaching others. For example, this is some incredible footage he shot of Claude Vitoria, an elderly former circus performer who assisted with Ido's Equilibre training:

Great story behind that trip:

I am a "follower". I have basically read EVERYTHING Ido has ever written. I have read his all blog posts, fb-post and countless of his posts at gymnasticbodies forum(which are gold btw). I first learned about Ido 2-3 years ago when I was practicing capoeira and he hit me hard. I think he first became popular around capoeira circles, then handbalancing + gymnastic circles.

I haven't attended his seminars but I have heard they are awesome. His online coaching on the other hand seems to be low quality and costly. I have read that they basically just send a copy paste routine and then give criticism when sent videos.

I am listening that london real podcast for the second time now. That podcast sent me to a mental trip, because I had so much self-reflection going on .

Awesome data sheet LeBeau. I've only heard brief snippets of his stuff so having a centralized point to start reading up on him is awesome. Thank you!

Great datasheet, I'm going to spend some time trolling through all the information. This definitely belongs in the new section (lots of work got put into compiling it I see), sure hope it will bring some new insight into the rvf lifting/fitness community. Exciting stuff!

Quality information LeBeau.

As a young pup my parents bought us a play set that had gymnastics rings on them which I used to mess around on all the time. As I got to my teens I had a natural ability to be able to pull whole body weight up on to high places. I was the guy who would get the ball off the roof when it got kicked up there.

I've been hitting the gym for the last 6 months with weight training and not really getting the physique i'm looking for and looking for a more holistic approach... I think this info will help.

Thanks

This might seem a stupid question, but how does one get started on a program like this?

Seconded, where to start? I'm really interested.

Programming workouts is one of the most difficult aspects of proper training. I'm by no means an expert. From what I've gathered from the above links and other comments made by guys in that initial post, is that it is helpful to break up training days in terms of Bent Arm Strength, Straight Arm Strength, Legs, etc. Of course this isn't exhaustive, I may just be touching the surface, and it also depends on your goals. For example, Ido suggests focusing on certain goals (he has you pick 5 in priority for 3 months of online coaching) and moving the rest of your skills into maintenance for the time being (I.e. see the Bridge post). This allows you to work the direct goal, along with support exercises, while not losing previous gains in other areas. This is in contrast to workouts that emphasize a small amount of everything under the sun. For example, it doesn't make sense to try to develop your planche at the same time as goal like 100 pushups in a row, you only have so much capacity.

One aspect that helped me a lot in terms of mobility is being strong where you are flexible, and moving through your full range, both points that are missed in the usual discussions around flexibility that mostly focus on static stretching. So I would suggest reading everything in the first post, picking a few goals, along with a few problem areas for rehab/prehab, then working out a weekly routine, and sticking with that for at least a 4-12 week cycle. Again, these are things that have helped me, but I don't have anywhere near the knowledge or experience as the men listed in the first post, so I'm open to learning from others too.

Thanks. I'm going to give this a shot for about 3 months after my current program is over in July.
