Nice DS

La Puerta is the best night spot listed there IMO. Lot of local girls go there to meet foreigners.

not sure on a month rate, but here is some weekly rates

cheap end - 200 - 350

high end - 350 - 600

so you can assume for a month will be cheaper rate. im gonna say u can score a decent apartment for 500-600 a month through locals. like i said there is TONS of people on/near the beach offering apartment rentals esp in Rodadero

Dash you should expand a little on these "list type" Data Sheets. I mean, they are kind of cool, but this just seems like info you pulled off Lonely Planet or Back Packers R-US Dot com. Or maybe hostels4lifehomie dot com.

How about some vignettes about some of the spots?

Which is better than the other?
What are they like?
Does one have a good burger?
Is one a good move at 3:30am on a Tuesday night?
Which nights are they good on?
Which has the flyest girls?

Maybe break down the Data Sheet a little more like http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2010/05/bar...heets.html as an example.

Throw some of your personal experience into it.

Update:

Wait, is this from trip where you were going to spend like 36 hours in each city in Colombia?

I'm interested in if it's better than Cartagena. I decided no to go to Santa Marta because Cartagena was fine with me at the time. Let me know how it is and how the girls get down out there.

@Deebow

Alot of ppl consider Santa Marta to be the best city in Colombia. For a smaller city is has a TON of nightlife options. I cant wait to get down there anf meeting chicks.

@Dash

I hope you are right. But I think you will be disappointed. Santa Marta is more of a holiday town for Colombians. I went there in May, and it seemed pretty dead, especially Rodadera. As far as I recall La Puerta was the best place, but still not very good compared to places in Medellin and Bogota. And there's a lot of pros in there as well.

Not a whole lot jumping off during the week, but thats where daygame is gonna come in. Meet the girls and invite them out at night, mini private date for some drinks. Then hopefully back to the room.

Im gonna try and snag a hipster tourist chick from Taganga as well. But alot of my day is just gonna be spent relaxing on the beach.

Nightlife

Calle 17 in centro and around Parque Santander

This is the nightlife area. Lots of bars and clubs in and around these two spots that are about a block apart in Santa Marta.

Like others said La Puerta was a pretty good bar/loung/club. Only real place that will have some people during the week. Doesnt really play much reggeaton. Mostly salsa and american music.

I went to Matimba's one night and I really like the set up of the place! Two lounges in side with some dancing going on and one big outside area with music and a bar! This club is on Calle 17 up the street from La Puerta.

A few corrections and additions to the original post

WHERE TO STAY
Easy to find an apartment in Rodadero , hard to find one in Santa Marta. Ballpark $250+ per month

DAYGAME SPOTS

Parque Santander and Parque de Los Novios are the same place. Mostly known as Parque de los Novios. Great place for day game if you like old men, dudes selling coffee and dudes selling gum. If you like girls, this doesn’t seem to be the place during the day. Sure the occasional hot girl will walk by the park, but if you want to stand somewhere and game girls walking by Carrera 5 (1 minute away) is exponentially better. Late evening and night your chances at the park are better due to the insane heat during the day.
Ocean Mall is 2 stories with around 25 stores in it. There are about 5 attractive girls working in the mall as of writing. Not very many attractive girls walking around but there are occasionally some.
Parque Bolivar is the largest and busiest park. Gets a nice breeze from the ocean. Many banks and some office building nearby gives it a good traffic flow, prime time 8-9 and 4-6. Not many single girls or groups of girls sitting there but lots of people walking around. Juan Valdez café is right there to take them to if they are free.

NIGHTLIFE
Besides Thursday to Saturday there isn’t much open or going on in Santa Marta.
Valhalla-has not existed since the summer of 2010. Now it is Vonchess. Calle 17 btwn 3rd and 4th
Mi Ranchito is in Rodadero not Santa Marta
La Puerta- the best place to pick up tail. Not a classy place but the clientele is open to talking and hanging with foreigners. Quality of tail here is ok to good, probably closer to ok. Beer 3k pesos, bar closes 3 AM Friday and Saturday, Thursday it closes whenever it feels like, I’ve been there ‘til 3 and walked by another week and it was closed at midnight. Calle 17 btwn 2nd and 3rd
Mariamu Kna Bar- cool decorations and layout, good music, better looking women than La Puerta but the clientele is not very friendly. Majority of people seem to be students with blackberries. There was a cover charge when I went on the weekend not sure if there always is one (5-10K pesos no drink included). Calle 17 btwn 3rd and 4th
Matimba- Dash had a good description, clientele seems to be the same as Mariamu but the place is larger and has a better layout. Calle 17 btwn 3rd and 4th
Ancon- 2nd btwn Calle 17 and Calle 16
Lautrec- 2nd btwn Calle 17 and Calle 16 went to both of these places pretty wasted and late but seemed like similar clientele as Maiamu Kna
Crabs- rock and roll bar and the most western style bar in town. Mostly Colombian clientele but some expats as well. Owner plays 60’s and 70’s rock videos on the numerous TV’s in the bar. There is a pool table but as of writing it was missing a ball, and I don’t think they are in a hurry to replace it. Owner and waitresses are very friendly. Calle 18 btwn 3rd 4th
Banana’s- a dump, I’ve only seen guys walk into the place, wouldn’t be surprised if it was a whorehouse, but I didn’t go in so I’m not sure.

Beaches
Two most popular nearby beaches are at Taganga Beach and Playa Grande (20 minute walk from Taganga). Taganga Beach is ok, Playa Grande is good not great. Sometime the water is dirty in both ie trash floating around, especially after heavy rains. Picturesque places from the nearby hills but these beaches won’t blow you away.

Scuba Diving
Maybe a dozen scuba shops in Taganga, typical package is a 2 dive fun dive, typically 120K pesos with everyone except 150K pesos with Poseidon. They charge more bc their boat is much larger and nicer, and you get your own dive computer for the dive. Diving is good, will need wet suit regardless of outside temperature. Advanced course about $300 bucks. Aquantis and Poseidon have the best equipment, Poseidon being 1st.

Gym
Closest “western style” gym to the Centro is on the second floor of Ocean Mall (15-20 min. walk from El Centro or 4K peso taxi ride). One month 91K pesos, if you pay for 1 day I think it’s 12K pesos. Plenty of treadmills and bikes, typical free weights and machines. There is 1 or 2 others near Buena Vista Mall but I didn’t check them out (additional 15 min walk same taxi fare)

Spanish Schools
There are some in Santa Marta and Taganga, they were all crap. I’ve taught English as a foreign language and have studied Spanish in 5 countries so I feel I know what a good teacher is. If you’re serious about learning Spanish avoid this city, need a few pointers it might be ok. Obviously I did not study with every single teacher but what I saw was not impressive.

Overview
Santa Marta is nice laid back city. Nightlife is below average, girls maybe average looking. It’s a nice place to stay on your way to Parque Tayrona which is awesome. I wouldn’t stay more than a week or so, maybe only a few days.

Colombian women positives: sexy, very affectionate, like to party
Colombian women negatives: flakey beyond belief, nosey, princess syndrome

Taganga is nearby and a nice place to do nothing, smoke weed and hang with Europeans, Aussie’s and Israeli’s. I only went there for the beach on weekends or to dive so I have no input on the nightlife and it’s so small you can find every place is 5 minutes.

These are MY opinions and luck and many factors can make your trip better or worse. I saw maybe 3 holy crap hot girls after a few months in Santa Marta. Compared to Tokyo or Shanghai where you see them hourly (obviously you see more people per hour also). On the coast I was not impressed with Colombian girls looks, most are fat, ones with good bodies often have braces. FYI I prefer slender chicks for a frame of reference. I’m sure Medellin and Bogota have hotter girls but I didn’t go.
Now I await for the obligatory you hated it bc you didn’t get laid (I did)response. Go….

Now this is the kind of shit i like to see redneck!

Thnx for fixing some of my locations. I took in a TON of intel on club / bar locations in and around the Santa Marta area (rodadero, taganga, santa marta) hard to keep all that straight without spending significant time there.

I thought playa grande beach sucked. Taganga much better in my opinion. Fuking rocks galor at playa grande not to mention the water doesnt look the best and is ass cold. Still worth a walk to check it out with the awesome views.

Nightlife is subpar here, and the women looked the worst out of the three main coastal cities.

Funny enough though as I liked the layout and scenery of Santa Marta the best.

Redneck you stayed in Santa Marta 3 months?!?!?

yep, i don't like to bounce around. Purposely left all cold weather and rain gear at home so I wouldn't leave the coast.
