The Selfie Fad Isn't Going Anywhere

Selfies has been somewhat of a hot topic this week in the forums.

I honestly believe selfie fad won't be parting ways from us for quite some time and here's why:

Lots of Media and Social Media coverage.

I check through CNN.com periodically throughout the week and they actually have a page dedicated to Selfie's Of The Week

If a week is too long of a wait well, we have Selfie Of the Day

Haven't found a selfie of the hour yet, but stay tuned. It'll be there.

There was a thread that highlighted the music video,#SELFIE, that has now reached almost 150 million views.

I found an article from the Gazette via a quick Google search on military selfies. This article explains how a member of the US Armed Forces decided to take a selfie instead of saluting the flag. A brief quote:

Quote:Quote:

Pfc. Tariqka Sheffey, of Fort Carson's 43rd Sustainment Group put the image on her Instagram account with a caption that read, "This is me laying back in my car hiding so I don't have to salute the 1700 flag, KEEP ALL YOUR 'THATS SO DISRESPECTFUL/HOWRUDE/ETC.' COMMENTS TO YOURSELF cuz, right now, IDGA FFFF (acronym for I don't give a 'expletive')."

Gotta love our women in uniform. [Image: dodgy.gif]

Our celebrities and other public figures are all over it.

They're even coming out with a selfie TOASTER. You know it's bad when even Jezebel thinks it's too much.

A good read is an article from the New York Magazine going into the history of Selfies.

Quote:Quote:

Let’s stipulate that most selfies are silly, typical, boring. Guys flexing muscles, girls making pouty lips (“duckface”), people mugging in bars or throwing gang signs or posing with monuments or someone famous. Still, the new genre has its earmarks. Excluding those taken in mirrors—a distinct subset of this universe—selfies are nearly always taken from within an arm’s length of the subject. For this reason the cropping and composition of selfies are very different from those of all preceding self-portraiture. There is the near-constant visual presence of one of the photographer’s arms, typically the one holding the camera. Bad camera angles predominate, as the subject is nearly always off-center. The wide-angle lens on most cell-phone cameras exaggerates the depth of noses and chins, and the arm holding the camera often looks huge. (Over time, this distortion has become less noticeable. Recall, however, the skewed look of the early cell-phone snap.) If both your hands are in the picture and it’s not a mirror shot, technically, it’s not a selfie—it’s a portrait.

We live in an age where anybody and everybody can be important over the internet. I truly believe it blinds many of us from whats really important in life. It's definitely not a self and it's really not a selfie stick.

Selfies reminds me of a monkey discovering itself in the mirror.

Please fill me in on how talking about selfies is relevant to anything. Who cares. Selfies are extremely douchey and kind of funny. Not sure why it's worth talking about. It's a better use of time to make money or get laid instead of thinking about selfies...

Selfies are not the problem. The problem with people who likes them on facebook, every-fucking-time.
Also, the problem is that this is not shamed, but celebrated. Its inflates the girls ego, and makes them delusional about their own self-worth.

Is it just me or in the first picture Brad Pitt is the only one who doen't fake a smile.

Also those 'smiles' look psychotic as fuck, if I don't know any better I'd think they're belong to a mental institution.

Nah, this is classic body language stuff. I noted that a while back in another thread: people's growing inability to project genuine smiles, which would involve empathy with others and subtle understanding of emotions in reaction to the stimulus of others. I used that Oscar picture as an example. They're acting, and extremely-badly, which is ironic, given the venue.

Brad's is genuine - he's doing the alpha-as-fuck half-smile, where you curl one side of your lip up. Classic Connery.

- If the eyebrows raise rather than move subtly outwards, it's fake.

- If both rows of teeth are showing, it's fake.

- If one or both corners of the mouth don't slightly or strongly curl up, it's fake.

If you're a younger guy, learn how to genuinely smile: it will project charisma and confidence to girls, and they will sense there's something 'different' about you. You can also tell when a girl is politely-tolerating your company and move onto a better target.

For illustration:

The girl on McQueen's right is 'performing' for the camera but the slight curl at the corners of her lips mean she's having a good time underneath the act.

The hottie to McQueen's immediate left is a genuinely-happy girl, having a blast. I often think Feminists try to stop women smiling for men, because it enhances their beauty and is infectious, and they don't want female power to come from a place of beauty.

The girl to McQueen's far left appears self-conscious compared to the other two, and the smile is less natural, though it's possible the spontaneous, non-selfie nature of party photography caught her mid-expression.

If anyone needs further confirmation McQueen knows his shit, the vast majority of women in his recent 'outing' article are smiling-genuinely. This is a guy who knows how to cultivate that vibe for a girl.

Contrast with narcissists with no chemistry, faking having a good time for their imagined audience:

Raised eyebrows, mouths subtly curling down, she's showing both rows of teeth.

[Image: Riding-A-Bicycle-Chiang-Mai-Thailand.jpg]

Ghastly, inhuman expressions.

[Image: baby-smile-smiling-babies-funalso-27222.jpg]

Babies smile like this because they haven't yet learnt to identify and mimic human emotions via empathy.
