Santiago, Dominican Republic (First trip out the US!)

New to the forum guys so I'll start out by saying What's up everybody!? (Special shoutout to the homie InternationalSwagga)
I will be traveling to the DR in June (3rd-12th) and need some major tips on Santiago & Puerto Plata, from those of you who've been before. I'm mixed with Black, white and Indian with the curly hair, so I look Dominican and I speak SOME Spanish by the way. I'm curious to know though:

1. What are the best spots in the city to hit up as far as hotels, restaurants & clubbing?
2. How much are clothes there? (Because I love to shop & I heard they were cheap as hell.)
3. How would you recommend dressing? (I like to go the GQ route)
4. Did you encounter alot of people who spoke English? And last but not least..
5. How receptive are the women to the "brotha's"?

Thanks in advance fellas! Peace out..

Whaddup SO,

Glad you made it to the forum...like Lumiere said there are tons on threads on the DR that you can peruse.

I have a friend I can hook you up with who lives in Santiago as well who can give you a rundown and help you out when you touch down. I think you should sign up for Latin American Cupid and or Dominican Cupid, Amigos & Badoo as well. You will be able to clean up on those websites and have a nice stable ready for you when you touch down.

Dominicans girls can be very jealous so make sure to keep those girls on the straight in narrow on the friendship tip because when you arrive you will be seeing tons of eye candy and almost forget about the chicks you lined up online months before that will be dying to meet you.

1. What are the best spots in the city to hit up as far as hotels, restaurants & clubbing?

Hotels for Santiago you should stay at the Aloha Del Sol in Puerto Plata stay in Cabarete at one of the many beachfront smaller apartment hotels. Santiago clubbing alot of clubs and restaurants near the monument and other areas but again research the DR threads tons of information and holla at my friend I friend suggested for you.

3. How would you recommend dressing? (I like to go the GQ route)

In Santiago dress GQ to stand out...In Puerto Plata go the Beach GQ route...

4. Did you encounter alot of people who spoke English? And last but not least.

They have a decent command of english overall but the more spanish you speak the better.

5. How receptive are the women to the "brotha's"?

Extremely receptive...like me you can pass for being Dominican so you will blend in just fine and get extra points for being different and from the states.

Have fun man...I was in your shoes 7 years ago on one of my first jaunts and havenbt looked back since!

Santiago has clubbing alot of clubs and restaurants near the monument and other areas but again research the DR threads tons of information and holla at my friend I friend suggested for you as I'm not experienced enough there to drop a true data sheet. In Puerto Plata the nightlife is centered around Sosua and Cabarete and Playa Dorada where the all inclusive hotels are located at. You should hit all of them up and see what fits you. Sosua is the hooker scene, Cabarete more of an International Clientele with some locals and euros and Playa Dorada has most of the clubs for people from Puerto Plata and people staying at the hotel

Well we haven't met in person but have a mutual friend in famous game advisor, author, lecturer Tariq Nasheed and I post various travel related gems to his page quite often so that's how we met. He is a younger cat who reminds me of myself a bit when I was chomping at the bit trying to get out of the country back in the early 2000's.

SO-Welcome to the board. DR is a nice place to start. Good to see that you got the travel bug and decided to do something about it. However, search the forum and you will find a lot of great intel on the island. And as any board vet will tell you, view the women as a nice bonus and go with low expectations so you can be plesantly suprised.

Btw...Clothes may be cheap in DR but have you seen how those cats dress?? I wouldn't want to be caught dead looking like those guys!..lol

Speaking of which while your there definitely check out The Aguilas Baseball Team and game in Santiago...tons of dimes at the baseball games and its tons of fun. Also peep the Brugal Factory which is the local rum and have a few hand made cigars rolled up for you at the Cigar Factor there which is huge business in The Cibao Valley (Santiago Region). Also check out Jarabacoa Rier and Falls...You can do White River Rafting there and check out Pico Duarte which is the highest mountain range in the Caribbean. As you can see I travel more than just for a few bangs which come easy once you kick back and just enjoy yourself.

If you are in "El Cibao" region check out this website for restaurants and night clubs:

Be sure to hit club Coyote in Santiago:

Get down with some Merengue Tipico and Bachata is huge in el Cibao. Check out this radio station that you can listen to online to get a feel for the music. You can also find out what is popin in the city of Santiago as well.

Santiago is regarded as having the best looking women in the DR and my boy who lives there who is Dark Skinned African-American from Atlanta tell me he gets the MOST Love from the ladies living there than anywhere else in the country...more than Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata. So keep that in mind..I think one of the reasons is because is because Santiago people arent as used to foreigners as much as Puerto Plata/Santo Domingo.

The last time I arrived into the airport in Santiago in August 2010 my head was a constant swivel. It was so many good looking women in that place! Simply amazing...And you cant beat the friendly nature of the people from the DR...Yes they are hustlers but It's an art to know how to handle them.

If I could only get a picture of you when you first touch down in DR and walk outside and see those huge crowds outside waiting for family, friends and relatives in the DR. You are going to be in heaven especially as a 1st timer. I remember when me and 7 of my friends landed we were hollering at EVERYTHING moving once we landed...lol. Getting numbers of airport staff, passengers and restaurant chicks. It was fun times being a rookie in the game.

As for the statement made about Santiago regarding having the best looking women in the DR this is TRUE! I've taken about 3 trips to Santiago in the past few months. I will note however that women in Santiago don't speak much Spanish. Also, for those American Blacks that could pass for Dominicans things can be tricky. In general you will have to make the first move but most of the women are nice especial if you pretend to not speak any Spanish. I use that as my pick up line for these chicks and slowly allow them to teach me Spanish. It's amazing by the time, I take them back to my room i'm almost fluent go figure [Image: wink.gif]

I've been to Santiago about 10 times so I'm interested in what language you think the women in Santiago speak, if you don't think they speak much Spanish.
