Couples that Workout/Exercise Together

I'm seeing much more of this when I go to the gym and at the beach.
At the gym I'm seeing guys doing weight training with their girlfriends, and no their gf's aren't there to spot them, they actually take turns lifting weights together.

I also live right by the ocean and walk down to the beach around 2-3 times a week for sun and daygame. I'm constantly seeing couples jogging and doing beach fitness together.

This thread has been sitting in my draft box for about a month because TBH I don't exactly know how to articulate why this bothers me when I see guys working out next to girls like everything is even-steven.

I'm not at all attracted to girls that build muscle and burn fat; defined biceps, broad shoulders, and 6 pack abs are not something I personally find to be feminine on girls (see Katie Cleary) but its more than that.

It's like being arrested by a female police officer: the only reason she can arrest me is because I'm allowing her to do so. The coed workout trend gives me the exact same feeling, yet these women probably believe they are some kind of physical equivalent to men. Seems like both the male and female are deceiving themselves into believe they are 'equal'.

Anybody here workout with girls and/or their gf's? I'm curious as to how guys approach this. And I'm not talking about being a 'trainer' to a girl or helping her in the gym, I'm speaking directly to couples that do the exact same exercises as one another. Although outside of running the weights and intensity usually vary.

If you're at the gym doing big weight and your girl is hanging right there with you then that's a little weird. Girls looking to get big is not my thing, but if you mean generally couples just jogging together and doing cardio, light exercises, and keeping in shape then I think that's awesome. So many girls get fat so easy and don't do anything - a great way to get a girl and get/keep her in shape is to physically workout with her. If you workout regularly and she does too then you are actively participating in keeping her fit and sexy. What's wrong with that?

I know my main girl and I have been eating like shit lately and she is slightly thicker in the mid-section than I prefer, so I'm making a conscious effort to get us eating better when we are together, and we do good physical activities together like hiking. It makes you closer and keeps her slim. Win-win.

This guy I know brings his GF and 3 girlfriends to the gym. He's a cool motherfucker, though. I think he's training them all.

I will be checking my PMs weekly, so you can catch me there. I will not be posting.

A girl I used to date would go to the gym with me. I'd lift, she'd do cardio, then we'd go for a run together. I thought it worked out well and helped me with pacing my runs (I was always a sprinter).

I don't see anything wrong with this when the guy leads or when they both go to the gym and he hits the weights while she gets on the stairmaster. I'm speaking specifically about couples that do the exact same workout routines together. Something about this strikes me as completely emasculating

I don't know about emasculating, but they are both probably cheating each other out of a more quality workout by working with each other. It's hard enough finding similar men to even workout with on the same reps, sets, and goals.

Some personal trainers I know work with couples, but they usually separate them at the gym and make them do completely different routines , suited to their individual needs.

The vast majority of the time it's stupid. If you're lifting weights, chances are you're lifting a lot more than her. Running, you're faster. You're compromising your workout so you can feel cool in the gym. Stretches and kettlebell swings, sure. Plus girls often have all these stupid ideas about working out that lesser men will kowtow to.

My biggest beef with it is that dudes overzealously spot these girls, helping no one - it's like bitch, go home, fuck her, and then get a real workout without her. I don't want to see some thirsty dude spotting via bear hugging a girl on an empty barbell squat. The girls get an inferior workout because guys baby them so much.

My favorite was the big dude in gym clothes who rolled in with his hot girl in a nice sundress - while he was lifting, she waited quietly in the seating area.

9 times out of 10, I just know the chick will have little to offer as a training partner. Instead I'll be like her personal trainer, like the platonic friend who entertains her but never bangs her. Even if I'm already banging her, her demand for attention while I'm working out will be grating.

My comments based on American girls.

When I date a girl more than casually, I bring her into my life. I refuse to change my habits or behaviors, and insist that she change hers to better suit my temperaments.

In the kitchen, we cook what I want to cook. In the bedroom, we fuck like I want to fuck. And in the gym, we lift the way I want to lift.

When I first started dating the girl I've been seeing for the past 8 months, she was a vegetarian and would wear herself out on long runs because she thought that was the best way to be healthy. I've since introduced her to the paleo diet and lifting, with fantastic results.

She copies my routine (5x5 compound lifts with heavy weight 3x/week), but of course "heavy" for her is usually the bar or body weight. I've taught her how to spot me, so she provides value to my workout, and now that she's repeated it several times I don't have to spend much time/energy walking her through the motions. She doesn't always join me at the gym, but when she does it's a great way to spend time together and improve my health simultaneously. (It also motivates her to eat better-when you're putting that much effort in at the gym, you don't want to ruin it with candy bars.)

I will agree with you that the crossfit junkies and the masculine women at the gym are a huge turnoff. But there's nothing wrong with bringing your girl to the gym, especially if it's just one part of bringing her into your world. As we all know, women love being ordered around by a strong, dominant man. And most of the time, watching me get my pump on has her so horny that she's jumping my bones the minute we get home.

I have a friend who goes running with his wife, and then goes for another run afterward so that he "actually gets a real workout in too."

I know this because he told me while she was standing right beside him. She punched his arm. I like his style.

Seems like a good idea to keep your gal in shape. Personally its not my thing. I would rather work out alone or with another guy who is serious about making some gainz.

I don't work out with my girlfriend. I lift weights.

She knows how to count me down from 10-30 seconds when doing static holds, takes the plates off when I do drop sets, and takes videos. Is that beta™?

Would I rather lift with my guy friends? Yep, and I do when possible.

You ever try finding a legit male training partner?

Good luck with that. Even college kids or people with 9-5 jobs can't seem to make it to the gym on a regular schedule.

Ha, funny you wrote this.

I've been helping a friend of mine lose weight. She's really overweight but has lost a lot of weight with diet and discipline. She's pretty stocky and strong, but needs to move weight to be able to enjoy the diet she likes to cook (girl loves cheeses).

I got her to sign up for our company's gym discount and get her going to the gym. I wish more girls would do real lifting. It would do wonders for their pysches' and allow them to eat more food without fear of weight gain.

I'm proud of her progress, but she's going to be pretty jacked in 6 months. Not sure that's my style.

I lift with my girl. She is in no way trying to perform along side me, she just likes us going together and knowing we are both being healthy. Occasionally she will give me some new work out or I'll spot her but that's it.

I thought it was really weird at first cause I always lifted alone, but its not so bad cause she knows to stay outta my way for the most part.

I make my girl do squats after I finish my squats. I have her do them in between my pull up or shoulder press sets while I still have the spot reserved (my gym sometimes gets busy). The rest of my workout she is on a treadmill or doing abs.

Reminds me a female coworker who keeps asking me to workout with her and help her lose weight. Ive declined because I know for a fact that this girl has zero intention of putting in the work required to get in shape, especially with regards to nutrition.

A paraphrasing of a conversation weve had:

Her: Im trying to lose weight but its soooo hard
Me: You should probably focus first on cutting out carbs from your diet
Her: But i barely have any
Me: Describe your typical breakfast
Her: Nothing bad. Just some OJ and a croissant......[Image: dodgy.gif]

I've trained my girlfriend in HIT style training. She knows the rep cadence and can count it for me and keep track and she knows when to drop the weight during drop sets. Here she is with the man Markus himself.

I'm not going to be that "relationship guy," as I think it's cheesey and because it's cliche to go from talking about banging dozens of girls to talking about The One. But there are ways of involving your girlfriend in your life that validate her without also making you a sell out.

Not to derail the thread, but I tried out the HIIT for a few weeks. It's grueling. I'm still using most of the Mentzer 4 day routine, but not doing things super-slow. I'm doing it but with volume and positive/negative movements at around 1.5 secs (not fast, like I used to do). I love how Mentzer made sure to incorporate a leg workout into 3 out of the 4 days, as squats and deads give a person the biggest test surge.

If, prior to the relationship, you both worked out then there's nothing wrong with it assuming you're doing your own thing or if she's helping you out after she's finished her workout. If you're both doing the same workout then really the battle is already lost.

This is the example for the man who recently took the red pill:

If you're in a relationship and after the relationship begins you become serious about getting in shape, these joint workouts will not end well. She'll likely do her own thing, be finished, and ask, "How much longer?"

FUCK. There's nothing like having another person wanting to leave when you're in the zone feeling that surge at the gym.

She'll begin to miss days and you'll find that the majority of the time you're going to the gym alone anyway. There will be some bullshit comments about being "obsessed" with the gym or even something about over-training. In the end, it's about doing what you need to do and not caring about the nonsense. All of this will likely highlight the need to get out of the LTR...

MIKECF, do you think Markus is natty like he says? (says he only did it for a few months in the mid-90's)

I have never asked him. My friend (who knows him well) told me he was natural. When I said, "Really," he laughed. "Yeah, I tried telling him about something and he has no clue about gear."

I have seen pics of him as a teen when he couldn't afford to eat let alone use gear and he looked better than 99.9% of men could get from using extreme amounts gear.

Also, I'm not going to comment on his lifestyle....But I have partied hard with him and it would surprise people what a genetically gifted (as in 1 in 100,000) person can get away with.

He is someone who can do late nights, party, and do lots of other stuff and wake up and look amazing.

Very cool. Great info! Markus has gotten a lot of flack at the BB.com forums for allegedly lying about being a natural.

Markus is a dude who got huge at around 16, 17. So it's definitely easier to believe someone like that than someone who get's jacked after the age of 22.
