The new Thor is a woman: big news from an unexpected source

http://www.polygon.com/2014/7/15/5901697...n-the-view

Thor is one of the classic Marvel characters, created by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and Larry Lieber in 1962. The character was one of the first Avengers, and his standalone films have proven popular at the box office. That's leaving aside the fact that Loki is one of the best film villains to come from the Marvel universe. The character's latest arc was revealed on The View of all places today, and it turns out that, at least in the comics, Thor will be a woman in the near future.

"Thor, the God of Thunder, he messed up," Whoopi Goldberg explained on the show, as reported by Comicbook.com. "He is no longer worthy to hold that damn hammer of his. And for the first time in history. And for the first time in HISTORY that hammer is being held BY A WOMAN."

It doesn't appear that the character of Thor as we know him will become a woman, and of course nothing is forever in the world of comics, but with the current Thor losing his status and Mjolnir being wielded by a woman the mantle of Thor will be passed on. This is similar to story arcs in which other characters wore Batman's cowl, even though Bruce Wayne remained a character within the book's mythology.

Still, this isn't an off-shoot. "This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR," Ryan Penagos, executive editorial director of Marvel Digital Media tweeted, quoting Thor writer Jason Aaron.

It's an interesting play, and having such a high-profile announcement take place on the View, complete with backing on social media, is a great thing for comics. Combine this with Batgirl's new outfit and reboot and you have some great recent news for female characters in comics.

they are talking about comics on the view? Thats just plain strange. Also, I don't think its a big deal and will be temporary like the death of superman. It will be someone like Valkyrie using the hammer while there is some side story about the actual Thor regaining his rightful place. I mean the punisher was captain america while he was 'dead'

Good marketing though Disney/Marvel.

This is going to flop like a pancake.

Just look at the WNBA.

What's the WNBA, you ask?

Exactly.

This is straight up girl power shit. They take an Uber-masculine character and assign those qualities to a woman. They're not creating a counterpart to Thor. They're not making a woman to complement him and be his "Queen". They're just cutting off his balls and giving him tits. It's basically Tranny-Thor.

I expect that kind of thirsty behavior from modern comic book writers. They used to create the men they wanted to be. Now that it's socially acceptable to be nutless as a man, they're free to create dominate female characters that appeal to their beta mindsets.

Should be Thora, not Thor.

I'm a little embarrassed I remember this, but they did something similar before in a title called "What If?"
At the end of the day, their readership will change minimally, and for the worse, if at all.
It's a fantasy, being sold to the same people, who buy it not because of the content, but because it's a fantasy.

I sent a message referring to the 'mighty cock of Thor" yesterday.

I spent the weekend in Iceland. On my last night at the hostel, while watching the World Cup final, I made eye contact with a pretty amber Haired girl across from me. After the game I approached, quickly suggesting we sit down. She happily moved into a position with her legs rubbing against me, leaning in and I knew it was game on.

She told me about the beauty that is the late Icelandic sunset (in summer the sun never really sets), and after a quick makeout which seemed out of place given the relaxed nature of the hostel bar I suggested we take a walk (plausible deniability...)

It soon became apparent we were looking for a place to have public sex. Usually at midnight this is straightforward but Icelandic summers with their eternal sunshine present some unique challenges.

After she denied that the top of a grassy knoll was a good place (my wrong head was leading the way and rendering my delusions of being well-hidden overly optimistic) we settled on a quiet little ridge down by the water front, where we raw dogged under the midnight sun with a backdrop of the Icelandic mountains on the horizon.

Quite an epic location, hence 'Mighty Cock of Thor'...

As a comic fan, and a fan or Norse mythology, I say:

There is a way to write that well, but it is obviously pandering to get a female audience for a male space.

We all know how that goes.

The new Wonder Woman should be a man.

the thing is Thor, the God of Thunder, is a 'real' figure from historical myth/religion. And he was male. There were plenty of women in Norse mythology: Freya, Sif, Hel, etc.

It's like if I wrote a comic book about the Hindu goddess Kali or the Egyptian cat goddess Bast but said "Hey, in my version she's a man!"

I bet she's a real thundercunt.

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

What the fuck is this? There are plenty of powerful and influential female gods in Nordic mythology that they could have constructed stories about. Just think of Freya, Hel or Skadi.

And when the comic's ratings and sales tank (there just aren't enough manboobs/feminists in this world to make this a success), they'll blame "misogyny".

I grew up reading Thor back in day. It’s just a temporary thing. Beta Ray Bill was an alien who considered worthy to hold Mjolnir.

Thor was also a frog before:

This is just a marketing gimmick that Marvel hopes might catch on, a bit a like the Muslim Ms Marvel. Who gives a shit about a hero's religion? I don't!

Hey there is also Lady SIF from the comics as well which is meant to be his counter part also.

(fortunately that SIF doesn't stand for Secret Internet Fattie)

Kind of a tangent, but this thread made me think of how few movies are made these days whose target demographic is boys.

Off the top of my head I can think of plenty when I was a kid where it was clear the target demographic were boys- Stand by Me, Lucas, Explorers (with River Phoenix), ET, Goonies, Toy Soldiers, Iron Eagle, etc.

Seems like there are very few counterparts to those sorts of movies these days. No real coming-of-age movies for boys anymore. Instead we've got endless Vampire/Twilight series crap designed to appeal to tween girls. And now, of course, female-Thor.

^^^

There's a shit load of comic book movies aren't there?!

This is the golden age of comic book movies. If somebody told me 15 years ago that eventually Captain America & Thor would have had hit films, that the Avengers would be huge, and that there would be movie of Guardians of Galaxy with Rocket Racoon in it then I would have called that person crazy!

True, but the psychology of feminine control is this: they're not content to have their own things. They're only content when they have their own things, PLUS everything we have. The goal is total and absolute control. Of everything. This is the diseased thinking that drives the feminine mindset.

The feminine mind is a hysterical, manipulative, hypersensitive, and dictatorial one.

It accepts no opposition, and it tolerates no dissent.
