Your housing expense?

Just curious. What do you guys pay in rent / mortgage payments for where you live?

I'm currently looking at two places:

1st place is $680 a month but isolated and a bit of a pain in the ass to get to, although within walking distance of the nightlife.

2nd place is $1280 a month but a palace, the likes of which would make women drop their panties upon entry.

I'm sorely tempted by #2 despite the fiscal irresponsibility, because of the sheer potential of the place.

But the cautionary, prudent man inside me chooses the boring, safe #1.

What do you guys think?

Personally I'd go for the cheaper place and bank the rest for travel. I've been living a minimalist lifestyle for awhile now. In the U.S. I stay w/ friends and family. Having a nice pimp pad is nice but I find it unnecessary. Hell, I spent a year living in a 20' shipping container. Choose the smaller place and deck it out nice.

Wow, I need to move to where ever you are.

$1300 per month doesn't even get you in the Game where I live.

Back to your question, for me, the most important thing is location.

Is the beach walking distance?

Is there a little Italian market where you can get your meats and cheeses?

Is there nightlife you can walk to with fly girls? (no dui's etc)

Airport close by?

Is there a Gentleman's Club near by?

Boxing gym?

Your tailor?

Restaurants?

etc.

That all being said, the cheaper one gives you a "free" International flight each month. Nothing to sneeze at.

I have never bough into the "super sick crib to get girls" mentality: http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2010/03/pla...-crib.html

Not saying it doesn't work, it's just not for me.

#1 is within 10-15 minutes walking distance to all of the above, except the beach. #2 is in the heart of the action. #1 is 750 square feet, #2 is 1722 square feet.

I'm thinking #2 not so much for the women, but as a way to turn it into a live-work loft & social gathering point. Basically, I'd love to work there during the day, have parties on the weekends, and throw a bunch of informal events on off nights. The perfect culmination of luxury living, creative work loft, and party pad in one.

Interesting.

I guess your decision come down to what you want your focus to be.

1. Sick crib and lifestyle for your home base
2. Save money to travel

Which ever is your priority should give you your answer.

Sub if you can turn the pad into a way to make more income then go for it, but just remember the golden rule MOB. I once turned a $650 investment and some time into 150K. Remember that when you are paying an extra $600+ a month for the other pad and then reflect on if its worth it.

The amount you pay depends entirely on your income, doesn't it? You need to figure out what % of after tax income you're comfortable spending on your home. Is 10-15 minutes walking worth $600 a month?

Another option to consider: proper decorating.

Apply a fresh coat of paint to your 750 sq. ft. place. Now decorate it to be attractive to yourself & women (hire someone if you don't know how). Get some nice furniture pieces, not some IKEA crap. Proper accessories. Boom. A lot more cost effective.

I pay $2,000 USD on my mortgage/hoa dues but my pad is pretty sweet, Tri-Level Brownstone here in ATL with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths, Pool & Workout facility within the community, hardwood floors throughout, custom paint, granite, upgraded fixtures, W/D, Jacuzzi tub and a sun deck right perfect for grilling, relaxing, hosting, entertaining or banging right in the middle of the city and I work out of my place with a office downstairs and a two car garage.

I'm Walking distance to the train station, grocery store, barber shop, Tennis Courts and a College Football Field and Track, NBA, NHL, NFL games and Centennial Olympic Park. Also walking and 5 minute driving distance to all of the major Universities and Colleges in the area (Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and the AUC). I can also get to the airport door to door in 28 minutes on the train. It's worth the money It even though I'm not here much on weekends because It's basically a palace and when chicks come through It's pretty much game over and they are very impressed and like to get comfortable as soon as they step in. The colors are very earth tonish and mesh well with my furniture as well.

If your place can double as a place of business and social gatherings I would go for the higher priced accomodations hands down after all...It is your "home".

It's good that you own Swagger.

How much you have left on your mortgage? That's the thing that scares me into renting, when I see 20-30 year mortgage payment schedule for the *really* nice places I'd love to buy.

I just bought my place a few years back but I'm working hard to pay it off within 10-15 years. This place will always be my home base for making moves for the forseeable future so I'm not tripping nor am I looking to sell It. I could always rent it out as it's in a perfect location as well.

Our house mortgage is roughly $4,000 a month, including property tax. This is on a lower end for Bay Area housing, but we got it relatively cheap.

Bars letting out scenario 1:

"Hey do you guys want to walk for 15 minutes in heels back to my place."

Bars letting out scenario 2:

"Hey my place is just around the corner. Come up for a drink."

---

A lot of guys will tell you that 'environment doesn't matter', you can get laid anywhere. It's definitely true.

But nice environments enhance your quality of life and help make you better. Just like quality, durable clothing fits better and makes you look better. Just like having motivated, upwardly mobile friends is better than hanging with losers.

I'll tell you this: I feel 100 times more productive, happy, and excited about life when I wake up in my sick ass loft space than when I wake up in my parent's house. (maybe that's on me...maybe not)

I like to work in the places I live so if I'm cramped in a tiny, dark, shitty apartment for 12 hours a day working, it screws with my output and performance.

It's the equivalent of sitting at home and jerking it all day and then going out to the bars and expecting to do well.

If the apartment's value is worth $1300 to you, snatch it up. If it's expensive 'just because' then don't. If you value having a nice pad that will help keep you productive and help you reach whatever your goals or desired outcomes are, then it's a no brainer.

If it's going to hold you back in any way... like not let you travel / buy plane tickets like G said, then fuck it. Get the other place.

My 3 cents

I rent. I will never own a house.

I could if I wanted to, but I won't. Why?

I don't want ownership. I don't want commitment. I want to be as minimal as possible. Why?

I want freedom. I want simple. I want to live location free.

Go for the more expensive choice. t is expensive for a reason; don't cheap out on a good night's sleep.
