Hey, I'm curious, if all this new domestic oil is coming online due to fracking, why the fuck are gas prices going through the roof? I would think all this supply we couldn't reach before would keep a lid on prices.

As someone who worked for a company who already did (pneumonic) fracturing, this is well within my field. However, the market for Australia should be larger - do they do this in the mining industry, at all? For those that want a higher chance, AND a higher salary, look into getting a working holiday visa for Australia [Image: wink.gif]

I plan to move to AUS in about a year and it would be nice to know what the market outlook is considering their resources.

Well OZ has a large shell play with respects to oil. But the thing is what they lack is( druuuum roll)
Infastructure!!!!!
I know it may be weird to conceptualize, but the fact is even in OZ the region that drilling and hydraulic frac is economically viable, doesn't set us up to just drive in with trucks and frack the shit out of the place.

Most of the US refineries with "excess" refining capacity are located on our coasts (GOM, US East Coast, US West Coast). The US pipeline system is running at full capacity and most of the pipelines are set up to carry refined crude oil products from the US Gulf and East Coast into the midwest, not the other way around. The only alternative for these coastal refineries to purchase crude, is to secure it from the higher priced international spot market and then these costs are transferred on to the retail market.

Most of the new oil production coming out of the Bakken cannot be shipped by pipelines as they have not been constructed yet. The only alternative is for the crude to be transported by railroad which creates higher costs for the consumer. This is why you are seeing a lot of the Bakken crude sold at a deep discount to WTI to try and make it attractive to the refiners for purchase, and it is still a logistical nightmare to price it into a refinery due to the lack of infrastructure.

This is one of the reasons why the Keystone Pipeline is so important for the US. Yes, it will bring Canadian Crude down to the refineries in the US Gulf, but there will also be excess pipeline capacity available to ship US crude from the Bakken to US refineries and this excess supply should put a little downward pressure on gasoline prices. Will it cause gas prices to drop significantly? That I don't know and we will have to wait and see once the infrastructure is in place. Gasoline is a global commodity and like it or not, global supply and demand still plays a part in US gasoline prices.

That's just it, while high...the prices would be out of this world if not for frack.

Its a competitive market. When you see the price per barrel drop below 70-80 dollars. We all loose our jobs, because they start shutting shit down. Because they don't make a profit by drilling.
Which ultimately will cause the price to go right back up! Then we go back to work.

So what about guys who have no experience/education or connections whatsoever in that industry. What's the chance of someone just walking in off the street with their sleeves rolled up and being able to find gainful employment?

Houston got hired. He will probably chime in. They have job fair almost every week in the area. There was one out here yesterday and another in San Antonio on the 8th. Pretty easy but I would get my cdl first to become an equipment operator. They start from 18-22 an hour working 60-100 hours a week.

I am making almost a grand a week working 60-68 hours a week out here and i am technically not in the oil field.

Hey,
Are they paying EOs 18-22 starting, for Texas based teams?
All my friends here who worked in Texas said the made considerably less. That would be a good option for guys to avoid the ND ass pain weather. But here they are getting 20-23 start with, per diem of $50-100 a day. 90-110 average weeks.

Weatherford starts that high. Trican starts around 17-20.

Source: I work for Weatherford and my brother worked for Trican.

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

Yeah that cool, the only former weatherford guy I know is an engineer. Same with trican. Do those guys get housing and per diem also, EO's.

I heard the EOs at BH were making more than the engineers the first 2 years. But that's only if you factor in housing and per diem. Which is an important consideration.

^^^That's how a lot of the Bakken crude is being transported to the refineries. The Bakken and all the ethanol production in the Midwest has been a huge boon to railroads like CP and BNSF. The Bakken has also created a lot of inbound traffic in the fracking sand. Wisconsin has become the number one producer of the sand I read recently.

*Hotwheels used to run those trains through that very spot. That's south out of Milwaukee heading for Chicago.

Damn, thanks for opening my eyes to this.

I have an engineering degree from PA so I'm going to look into one of these oil frack boom towns and make the move next year. Pennsylvania would be ideal due to being close to home. If any of you have any info on fracking in PA specifically, any tips would be much appreciated.

Meanwhile I'll use the all info from the the oil industry threads as well as other information that is elsewhere online to put together a gameplan to get this done. I'll track my progress too.

Update
I changed t a larger Canadian(eh) company to find out there schedule is shit. So I'm not hanging around, since I got an even rotation offer a couple days latter. Unlike the media is reporting, the fracking isnt slowing down at all. These contracts for work are book months to years in advance. The company I am currently at is so short handed its rediculous. They will hire anyone with a pulse and CDL, because they cant keep enough manpower to handle the work load. So to give those who are interested in Fracking a HUGE help I am gonna compile list of frac companies that you can apply to. Just google the name and careers. Hit me up, because I know guys all over and maybe I can get you an internal connect.(as long as you dont strike me as a retard)
Knowing where to apply is half the battle:

Calfrac
Trican
Sluberger
Rockpile
Keene
Weatherford
Haliburton
Baker Hughes
FRacTech
C and J
gofrac
Liberty
PumpCo
Nabors

You can thank me now...

Give me a couple years.
You've given me a bunch of good info in this stuff.I wish my current contract was more energy focused.

Do you have any guesstimate of what the industry may look like in 5 years?

Based on the past history of the indutry, probably 70-80 bucks a barrel.

No one really knows though.

Those are all hiring. Been in Williston for a few months.

BUT, no one will hire you without the CDL.* unless you know someone inside or you have experience.

I haven't found anything. Going back home to get my cdl and try again.

Yeah, he is exactly right. 70-80 dollars a barrel. But we are evolving in frac/well stimulation. i think we will be able do the service for cheaper, and make it more profitable.

You need CDL class A! But also you will need to get hazmat endorsed eventually.. However a class A license will get you through the door.

Thanks for the info drop OP! I'm saving up money to take classes for my regular driver's license, and immediately after I'm gonna get my CDL, so that being said, will these companies hire brand new drivers such as myself? Also, are there gigs available for just trucking?

Now I have the opposite question of what I posted above. Now that gases prices are falling through the floor, how is this impacting the oil industry in ND and Canada? From what I've heard, fracking is an expensive way to get oil out of the ground and it only makes financial sense when oil prices are high.

This is all fascinating. I have no idea how long oil will be this low and so much geopolitical shit is intertwined with this. Saudi Arabia could cut production, but that would only help Iran and Russia which they clearly don't want. And the low oil prices are strangling Putin which is great for America. Saudi Arabia is sitting on huge cash reserves so they can weather the storm. So who knows, these low prices may hold for awhile. What impact do you think that's going to have domestic fracking?

Latest rig count showed 37 less rigs across USA.

With a desperate Russia, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia all pumping out oil with no buyers, Oil could drop to $35.

I think modern companies are careful to retain talent and avoid layoffs as much as possible, but there is a breaking point where they will have no choice but to cut the office jobs along with field roles.

I sell mudlogging services......personally I hope the drop continues so maybe real estate and apartments will drop in Midland
