What to look for in a wing man?

At home, I'd usually go out alone. I might meet friends at a venue, but when it came to talking to women, I was on my own. (almost all of them are married with children - although that errant fact is neither here nor there)

But since i've been here (in DC), I've realized I wing man would be very useful in situations that i'm unfamiliar with.

I look for someone that can hold a conversation with a girl and keep her interested and 'occupied' while I'm talking to her friend. The wingman's game doesn't even have to be that tight.. he can make friends with the girl for all I care.

Having a wingman with good game is a bonus though, at least for me. It means that he can open some sets for me, instead of me doing all the opening.

One that you can trust, that doesn't jump over you to get with a girl that you are working on.

One that doesn't have bad game and can run interference for at least 20 minutes on the friend while you do your thing.

One that is cool and doesn't drag down your value. a girl shouldn't wonder "why is he hanging out with him?"

girls always make the best wingmen, (bi ones are better - just don't try to make it look like you are trying to have a threesome, even if you are)

It has to be someone that's not a total dork. I was at a party with one of my buddies and I agreed to wingman for him. Without getting into too much detail he ended up making a fool of himself before he worked up the courage to talk to some girls. I was working that set and he was doing some lame shit and they had decided, before he came over, that he was a dork.

I had to make a very crude exit because they had no idea my "cool" friend I was telling them about was the guy they've been laughing at the whole night.

A bad wingman can be a show stopper. Even though I was the wing in the story you get the point.

Very true. You can't have better social proof than walking into a club with 2 attractive female friends. That's way better than any wingman. In fact, it's so effective that I remember reading a couple years ago in the NY Times about a service called Wingwomen. You would book appointments with these women that were stunners. They would go out barhopping with you and act like your friend. The wing woman would be very sociable and she'd start conversation with whoever your target is. Then she's says, "by the way, here's my friend..." and then you take over. The social proof that comes with having beautiful women for friends can't be understated.

That's a good service, but I wonder if it the same business idea can be done for women, "wing men for women"?

No. Different dynamics. Men and women look for different things. Women look for social proof and men look for physical attractiveness. A women is most approachable when she's alone, not with a guy by her side. Say, standing next to a bar with a drink in her hand and with nobody to talk to(assuming she's attractive). On the flipside, a guy standing by a bar by himself with no one to talk to looks creepy to women. There's no greater social proof a man can have than being surrounded by beautiful women.
