You will subconsciously project a message with your body language and demeanor

Agreed. Sometimes there is just no replacement for the real when the time warrants it.

All my love to my westside guys but if you read the Florida stuff here or on the news..

We do NOT give a flying fuck who we hurt or why. You have to be this way when things get ugly regardless or else you will end up the victim interviewed.

Now. If you can talk like a human and anyone fucks with your shit here you can fuck them up beyond recognition and get high fives from the sheriffs. This is Florida. The law here has massive respect for anyone productive.

id hate to live in Florida if thats the case, in England were hear about it being a nice family orientated place?

Some really good points here, fellas. I think situational awareness and quick responses are critical.

I'm taken notes.

I think a situation where you have to defend yourself is so rare you don't have to worry about it at all.

There's no harm of course knowing some martial arts, as a hobby, way to workout, and just in case. I want to do some martial arts still and is one of my goals.

But like it's been said above I think situational awareness is the most important. If you can separate your ego from situations where a fight is a possibility you will very, very rarely have to fight.

I still haven't had to yet and I hope it stays that way.

The one situation where I would have to fight where my safety or life is at risk or that of a friend/girl that is with me I'm counting on my instinct to help me win. I liked the danger and play articles, fight only if absolutely necessary, recognize the situation and take the hit first, be relentless, and get the fuck out of there asap.

I still have my father's old army hand-to-hand combat manual. Useful stuff in there.
You can probably find a copy at army surplus stores and some online.

I agree with avoiding first by using situational awareness. I train bjj and love it; sure id use it if I got in a fight but I'd try not to. A black belt I know recently was sucker punched at a bar; fight went to the ground and the black belt choked him out with a triangle choke but before he could get up he got stomped out by 4 guys and now his head is the size of a basketball...he's OK but I agree you don't want to be on the ground in a real street fight unless you need to be or have some solid back up and more of it than your adversary. This guy could take most people I know one on one stand up or on the ground and he got messed up by some drunk punks that didn't train in any martial arts. Avoid fights when possible and end them quickly when you can't.

Yes, that is the very real and very common result of a street fight that goes to the ground.

For that reason, I think BJJ is actually approaching McDojo territory if they actually try to claim - as many do - that BJJ is realistic street self defense. For self defense, you should learn enough grappling to avoid the ground, but do everything to keep it standing.

Of course, the fact that UFC is now the only show in town in MMA, might have contributed to this idea of ground fighting, since the rules in the UFC disallow stomps, soccer kicks and knees to a grounded opponent. Totally unrealistic.

On the other hand, back when PRIDE FC, was around, you could first hand see what happened once your takedown failed and Wanderlei Silva kicked your head off while you were on the ground. For that reason, takedowns were a lot more calculated and ground battles much more intense.

I'd rather be like Mirko Crocop with excellent takedown defense, but focusing on standup or do like Fedor, keep it standing and if you engage the ground, do it with vicious and quick ground and pound.

Video example for those who didn't follow PRIDE:

BJJ used to be the Shit but people realise ground fighting is avwey limited skill

Judo or wrestling is useful as you can remain standing or KO someone if they hit concrete

If a fight becomes a necessity, I promote the quick and sharp kick to the family jewels, knee in the face, then walking away method.

Physically- plyometrics, maximal lifts, and conditioning drills (do burped for 3 minutes straight 4x check out rosstraining.com for many ideas on strength and conditions from a world class trainer). Any skill (wrestling bin boxing Muay Thai Krav maga-you will learn the most from sparring) is better than no skill. Obviously get away if you can.

Non lethal weapons- consider a stun gun taser or pepper spray- I know you could get pepper spray past doormen at most clubs and would be great to deploy on a bigger stronger opponent if it went down. Spray his ass and run before the bouncers get you and call the popo.

Guns- Ask combat vets what works and what doesn't- screw what hobbyists and gun magazines say- ask peoe who have killed how to kill because guns are designed for that- for carry and riding in the car its hard to beat a .45 acp All the gets swear by them and the military is going back to them over the 9mm.
No one talks about ammo enough- put some bad ass high velocity ruthless projectiles in your gun like Corbon (hottest commercial loads you can buy- awesome in 9mm), Winchester Ranger, or Hornady XTPs (incredibly accurate).

If you really want to learn about guns check out Boston's Gun Bible by Boston T Party aka Kenneth Royce. Incredible book.

I have made this point in every post that I have ever made on this topic. You never want to go to the ground in a fight. It is foolish and extremely dangerous.

If you do get taken to the ground, your number one goal is to escape and get back up on your feet. Regardless of your skill level, once you are on the ground you are a sitting duck for any fool who decides to launch a kick at your head. Your life can literally end. This is a perfect example.

Street fights have no rules or honor, so if you're going to get into one, expect to fight some asshole and two or three of his dipshit friends. That's why you want to stay on your feet and box or avoid fights entirely.

If you try to take on one guy seriously with judo takedowns or wrestling maneuvers you're open to getting fucked up by his friends. You have to stay defensive and throw as many punches as possible until you can run away.

The guy who wrote "Watch My Back" has a good skill where you push somebody and sweep their heels with your leg, then when they hit the ground you can axe kick them in the face until they pass out.

Damn! I would have thought that just dropping them to the ground and watching the back of their head split open would be enough!

But no . . . .
