Following through on plans vs. being able to change course

You are at a juncture in your life. You meed to make a decision about your life and dedicate yourself to something new. You put in the time and effort and your life begins to head in a different direction.

Its 2012 and now you are living a life that is very different due to your 2010 decision. You are still new at it but figuring things out. And yet you are now thinking about a different path. You see new things in your life that dictate an even newer plan.

How beholden are you to your past self? To plans made years ago under different corcumstances?

My philosophy towards this sort of thing is to imagine a river meandering towards a mountain in the distance. The mountain in the distance represents your long term goals, things that you're working towards. The meandering river represents the path you take to get there. I don't think one should get too hung up in the small details of where life leads you.
