I cosign seeing older (45+) indigenous guys who are full of life and have no issue going for hour or daylong hikes in the amazon. Part of it is the regulatory effect on your bowel I think. And regarding the science. Current medicine has like two black spots in the body: the brain and the stomach, the two which ayahuasca seems to penetrate. I might go for a second round the coming year in Ecuador.

Actually, as I understand, much medical research is being done now in understanding how the stomach (actually bowels) affect the brain. It seems like there is much stronger link between bowel health and brain health than previously thought.

If Ayahuasca has an effect on the bowel too, then it is quite possible it could have a health effect too.

As for indigenous older guys being in great shape, that's par for the course if you're living a life outdoors in nature. Some of my family still herds livestock in the mountains and you wouldn't be able to keep track with a 50 year old there up the trails for more than 15 minutes. They also live incredibly long, several of my family members lived to be 90+ despite drinking and smoking.

I went to Peru late June for a week-long Ayahuasca retreat with Etnikas. 3 ceremonies total.

I'd say it was one of the best decisions of my life.
They say the work that is done is 90% within and 10% from the medicine.
I found this to be true.

If you have any intentions and questions you want to have answered, you'll get them if you trust the process.

I'd love to share more if you have any questions.

I'm intrigued by Ayahuasca and your experience in trying it.

Why did you decide to go and what did you hope to gain by going?

Why would you say it was it one of the best decisions of your life? What did it change for you and what benefits did it bring?

How did other people at the retreat view their experience afterwards?

A short write up would be much appreciated if you could find the time.

Ayahuasca and the body

So, I went for a second session of ayahuasca here in Ecuador. It was a lot different than the first time (read about it on page 4) although it did give me more insight about the first time as well.

I´m gonna give you guys a good amount of detail here, but off course take into account this is a very subjective experience. The things I see depend on my mind and on the context I was in.

In contrast to my first time, this time I was not taking it outside with indigenous people in the forest, but inside a house in the city where I live. We were 9 people in total and of those there was the main guy who facilitated the session, the shaman you could say who is a personal friend of mine, one other girl for whom it was her second time and all the others were doing it for the first time. Most of us didn´t know each other before so there were no interpersonal histories between us (which could impact your experience), except for the fact that there was one family there, father and mother of middle age and a daughter of about 18 I think.

The medicine man was making it an inclusive experience giving us a lot of context and adding some special elements to it. We were all seated in a circle and in the middle of the circle there was a small fire as well as a bunch of indigenous artifacts which had special meaning (related to energy, protection from bad spirits, attracting spirits etc.). We also had a bunch of medicinal plants to be put in the fire during various cycles. For instance, when someone would go bad, or start panicking, ´cedron´ was placed in the fire to clean the energy in the air and put us on the right path again. Besides this, we all had plastic bags for vomiting, a toilet was near, and we had some other substances which I will talk about as well.

Before we started the shaman explained us that ayahuasca is referred to as the ´abuela de la selva´, or the grandmother of the jungle, and that she will always deliver what you need and what you ask for, although you personally might not know what you need exactly. See it this way, many people lie to themselves about their position in the world and about their own character and actions. When under the influence of ayahuasca, your lies will disappear, your relationship with other people will show its true face and it depends on you how you will take that. You will face your demons. There is no hiding under ayahuasca. For the indigenous: mind, spirit and body are heavily interrelated and hence when you have a trauma in your life, or something you are suppressing for whatever reason, this can reflect itself in physical problems or disease. By showing you the truth, ayahuasca gives you the chance to process those events and to come clean with yourself, causing such a strong reaction in your mind that your body can heal itself. Furthermore ayahuasca as a brew is also a potent medicine. Anti-parasite, anti-fungal, anti-depressant etc. the list is endless and science is still trying to figure out exactly how it all works. For more scientific information on what ayahuasca does on a biochemical level, read the following article (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4773875/), some things are fascinating. For instance permanent change in brain connections, hormonal changes etc.

Let´s get to the experience itself. We started off with smoking a big fat tobacco cigar, made from leaves straight from the Amazon. While doing so, you make known what you which to get out of the experience, either through the heart (in silence) or by speaking out loud what you want the abuela to tell you or to show you. When you speak out loud, your words take shape in the smoke and are directly communicated to the universe (as the smoke goes to the sky, where the spirits live). This concept is known also with many witches and other religions I believe throughout the world.

After this we had another round, but this time of snorting tobacco liquid. This you could classify as a drug. Once you snort it, it opens your whole respiratory trajectory and activates certain parts of your brain. According to an indigenous friend the combination of this with Ayahuasca is very powerful, a catalisator, so you will receive the messages more clearly.

We drank. The ayahuasca as always is foul tasting, but in my opinion it´s not the worst. The ayahuasca we took came from the South Amazon of Ecuador and is considered Ayahuasca rojo. Brewed by indigenous named ´los shuares´ and another indigenous guy explained me this is considered the most potent form here in the region, possibly they added escopolamina in the mix (this for sure rings a bell to our Colombian travelers). I was getting the Ayahuasca+ experience it seemed.

After about 10-15 minutes the first girl started to vomit and soon after it was my turn. I knew from my first experience that I was in for hell (vomited about 10 times) and to be honest I was scared and nervous at that time. This is no joke. I asked myself, why did I opted for this again, why did I choose to go through this again? But no, I did it in full consciousness and also I needed answers and I wanted to improve my health. My mind made a click and basically said ´bring it on´. The first two times vomiting came fairly smooth, just the liquid leaving my body a bit (I hadn´t eaten for a full day (necessary!)). This made me more optimistic as I remember the vomiting during the first time as really brutal and painful.

Then a first strange thing happened. I started to yawn a lot, but really intensely. For me it seemed my yawns lasted several seconds, but it´s possibly it was already the drug acting in my mind. I interpreted it somehow as something leaving the body, possible negative energy. For those who´ve seen the Green Mile, remember those flies leaving the black guy, I felt like that. Except there were no flies ;-). Everyone in the room was quiet, most people had started to vomit.

The drug was kicking in and it seemed I was lucky, I was feeling great, as I had wanted to know how to relate to certain people in my life (read: shitload of girls) I directly felt positive energy around me. I visualized all those people and they all appeared smiling, it seemed everyone was in a positive relation with me, there was only love and acceptance. All of them appeared in their most beautiful form, happy and unique. I saw the energy of certain people, their nature and with a few girls I saw what spirit animal they had in them.

At that point, the younger girl of the group started panicking heavily. She started shouting that she wanted to get out, she didn´t ask for this experience, she wanted to return to normality. Fear was in her eyes and voice. The guy next to me, her father, got up and wanted to help but the shaman immediately told him to sit and let it happen. This happened a few times. There is no fighting the ayahuasca. The energy turned as now some people became nervous, the girl kept shouting and pretended like the shaman was an evil force, ´why did you put stuff through my nose?´, she asked him with anger. I kept calm, I was in a happy state and knew that this would not affect me.

At that point I got in deeper. I started visualizing everything and I went from a personal phase, seeing people close to me, to a state of connection with the earth. I saw beautiful visuals of nature, spectacular land shapes, and forms of life. The spirit animals presented themselves to me. They say it can happen that you see animals in your visuals but mostly one or just a few. For instance the jaguar is good and the guardian of nature, the snake is bad and dangerous etc. I did not see a few, but perhaps between 10-15 different animals and their pure nature. Not only that. The elements of life presented themselves as well. Earth and Fire came first and came very visibly, a direct connection formed between them and me, seeing their neutrality and absolute power. Water came after in a later phase. Wind I don´t seem to remember seeing or feeling. At this point I was ecstatic, feeling extremely happy and blessed to see such amazing things. I vomited a third time mildly. I saw how nature was completely interconnected. How all shapes and beings are expressions of energy.

Meanwhile in the group a variety of things happened. Most people were vomiting and feeling strange. We had a brief moment when everyone returned to consciousness and discussed what was happening, when the shaman made the fire bigger and used some essences. One girl said she was not feeling anything and was invited to take more. Some were vomiting. The girl seemed to have calmed down again. In a very strange way, and this would happen several times during the session, everyone would become aware, some would talk a bit and for me this would be the point where I thought we got over the highest point, that from then on visuals would decrease and we would return to normality. Maybe 3-5 times this happened and every time, at a certain point it just became quiet and everyone would go back in a trance. Simultaneously, like ´the abuela´ ordered it. It seemed to fool the shaman as well.

At around what I imagined halfway the session, 2-3 hours in. The father of the girl that panicked started vomiting brutally. Really on an extreme level. Vomiting continuously, shouting in pain and anger. He managed to reach the toilet and stayed there for hours to come. We would hear very loud shouting, vomiting and this for a long time. This guy was fighting demons in himself and at times it look like there was exorcism taking place. Really absurd and frightening. Surprisingly most of us were so immersed in their own experience that there was not a strong reaction, no one panicked anymore and the shaman told everyone to just let it happen, not to worry too much.

Then came the conclusion of my experience. I thought that for me it was done, some small visuals and then slowly return to control. I was wrong. Out of nowhere I went in extremely deep. I encountered myself in a metaphysical realm, still feeling completely happy and grateful to receive whatever would come. The sky opened up for me and I saw an incredible and powerful light, which I immediately identified as the force of life. I am not a religious person, but what I saw at that moment I identified as god, the source of eternal energy. White spirits would surround it whom I could see only from a distance. The second proposition I made at the beginning was to receive help with health problems I´ve been fighting with for a long time. At a certain moment, a beam of light came down on me, going through my whole body. I think my whole body physically reacted to it, but maybe that just happened in my mind. I felt like I was blessed and cured at once, the energy was very powerful. This was a divine experience I had and even until now, I have trouble understanding it, as a skeptical, rational person. The energy activated everything in my body and mind, did its work and then left. I was exhausted after that.

After this, a new moment of clarity came for everyone. Except for the guy fighting demons. Some talked, I didn´t, I basically was just baffled over what had happened and just stayed quiet and listened, with a smile on my face. From then on, the group went into various waves of the drug with people reliving and then sleeping. For me the visuals decreased and I mostly slept. Probably about 2 hours passed like that. To my surprise people kept vomiting until the end. I just felt very happy, in peace, but also physically exhausted, my muscles were completely put to sleep. I could crack several of the bones in my body when stretching. The guy remained shouting, vomiting, being in absolute pain and the shaman ordered one of us to check up on him and invite him to the circle. After a while we succeeded, but it took effort and basically he just continued fighting but just as part of the group this time.

At the end, the shaman gave us water, a glass of water and afterwards we could smoke the tobacco once more. The water was received like the biggest gift in the universe. People would look at the glass, smell the water, take small sips taking in the taste and enjoying it to the fullest. I was one of the first to be able to get up and walk around a bit. Some people talked a bit but overall many stayed quiet.

One other strange thing happened at the end. Although in the group, we probably vomited a total of 50 times or so, the shaman had not vomited once. At the end, he asked to pass an object, I forgot what it was, maybe a blanket. The girl next to him gave it and there was brief physical contact. Out of nowhere, completely unexpected for him as he was feeling in total control, he vomited as well. It seemed like the perfect end of the session. The indigenous say the shaman takes in the negative energy in the group, as he has the power to control it.

We thanked the shaman for his guidance and left to home.

The next day I woke up home and felt both humbled and happy. I walk around, ate a glorious meal, enjoying fruit juice and talked to a few people. I wrote down some actions I wanted to undertake which the ayahuasca showed me. Mainly re initiating contact with some people. It was time for reflection and quiet moments.

Two days after, I felt bad all of a sudden after some negative contact with some people, I stayed bad for a good portion of the day, basically down, like after taking XTC or something. After that it changed again and it was again positive but not as intensely as before. I did some actions that I felt were necessary from what was shown through the experience (I made a list) and others I did not follow up on. I might still. Some people I just did not want to engage, mainly from a red pill point of view (kind of in line with the no-contact thread I guess). My health improved noticeable, but it´s not like everything was cured at once, which I thought during the experience.

Overall an incredible experience. I did not expect it in the least and the shaman after speaking with him a week or so later said that it was very unusual what I had experienced. Something only guys with a lot of experience get to see and he thought that I was ready to learn how to start being a shaman apprentice, to be able to guide the energy in ceremonies.

We´ll see but for now I have no immediate interest in taking it again.

Ayahuasca is one very strong herb, use it with caution.

There is a reason why many people prefer to drink the full dose under the Supervision of a Shaman and a few sitters.

Someone who isn't me mixed a low dose of yellow bark Ayahuasca with the DMT leaves, and upon consumption my jaw became locked and I was terrified of being in a dark room.

When SWIM closed my eyes, I mainly saw kaleidoscope patterns and peculiar shapes, like those colorful hippie colors and stuff like that, but one thing which SWIM was horridly terrified of was when he closed his eyes, and he believed to see alien eyes.

SWIM kept his eyes open for the remaining four hours of the trip. It was a low-dose Ayahuasca. Higher dose (full dose) Ayahuasca will cause a trip where the person will be immobilized and unable to move for a short while, along with vomiting, intense visuals and roughly twelve hours of the trip rather than four hours-six hours on a low-dose Ayahuasca.

Remember this! DO NOT USE AYAHUASCA IF YOU ARE TAKING ANY MEDICATIONS INVOLVING SSRIS!

Wean off from SSRIs and other Serotonin pills for at least two months BEFORE taking Ayahuasca. Ayahuasca is scientifically claimed to increase Serotonin in the brain, so prevent Serotonin Syndrome and consult with a natural doctor if you want to consume Ayahuasca without the life-threatening side effects associated with when Ayahuasca and SSRI pills are mixed at the same time.

It was just the right timing for me to go. I had ended a LTR and had to cancel my flight tickets (purchased using points) to see her, but I decided to use those points to fly to Peru instead. I read about ayahuasca from Mike Cernovich's website and did some further research on Reddit, Youtube, here on RooshV, etc. I knew it was something I was going to try at some point in my life.

For the past two years, I lacked direction in my life. I always had some ideas of what I wanted to do, but didn't know if they were the right things to pursue. I also had other concerns in my life regarding family, friendships, etc.

When they say that the answers are all inside you, they're not lying. I probably could have uncovered these answers over time, but I knew ayahuasca was a tool that could allow me to figure things out in a much shorter period of time.

I saw many colors and shapes similar to what other members here have described. After a while, I saw visions that would later be interpreted in a way that answered my questions going into each ceremony. It was like a huge burden was lifted off my shoulders when you get clarity over something that's been bothering you. I believe this accelerated my growth as a person and allowed me to focus on what I needed to do in life.

Other people at the retreat felt like they had the answers to the questions they came in with. One guy skipped his last ceremony because he thought he got everything he came for, but he ended up regretting not doing it.

Ayahuasca ceremonies has now become weekend events in many big Western cities in North America and Europe.

I am thinking to try it myself, but must admit I am a bit sceptical because of the new agey, woo-woo, aspect to it all.

Just wondering if there are any more members who have tried it lately...what are the pros/cons?

To guys that have taken it over 6 months ago, what long term benefits has it brought into your life? I get the feeling that this could be like many self-help retreats, where people come out feeling really great for the first few weeks, then over the next few months their life goes back to normal.

*Asking on behalf of an acquaintance, I have no idea what shrooms or ayahuasca are, let alone have done either

A quick search of "shroom" in this thread didn't really yield any answers but

What would you guys say is the difference between shrooms and ayahuasca in terms of mental, physical, etc effects?

My acquaintance had a deeply introspective experience on shrooms and basically went crazy for a while. Is ayahuasca also more of an "in your head" experience? Or is it more "external" like LSD?

On long term effects: For me it is hard to say because I did not try ayahuasca to help me with a certain problem or mind state. I was and am still doing fine and living a generally happy and satisfying life. The effect it had on me long term is questioning my atheism, I am still not in favor of religion, but I do question the existence now of superior or other worldly beings after the things I have seen/heard and experienced. I also believe many things the indigenous believe, such as a balance between nature and man, how energy can go from one person to another or how nature can cleanse you of bad energy, basically interconnection between nature and mankind and a current lack of equilibrium. If you see how they live, you also question a lot of things of modern society, for instance disease, mental or physical are very rare in their lives, stress is non existent, family and tribe are the center of social relations, nature is the bearer of all gifts. Other than my personal experience, the internet is full of testimonies of people who made very serious positive changes in life after a ceremony, mostly people who were depressed, who had substance abuse problems etc. It can sort of calibrate you again and put you in a more focused positive state of mind.

On the second question, yes ayahuasca is definitely an 'in your head' experience. It goes deep into your mind and into the essence of your feelings. It helps in many cases by addressing traumas that have been hidden in the back of your mind or feelings that you have tried to repress. Ayahuasca physically is very healthy as well, it kills parasites, fungus etc in your stomach, which is not something shrooms do I believe. Mentally it is a lot stronger and confrontational on average, what you see is directly related to who you are and your place in the world, while on shrooms I think it is more random the things you experience.

But never forget, every ceremony is different and everyone reacts in a different way. I have seen people have no effect, people going into delirium, being truly ecstatic and I have seen people fighting demons for hours long, screaming in agony. The abuela ayahuasca decides who receives what.

I made a lot of posts on this thread. Unfortunately, I decided to delete them during the controversy over the meetups February last year. I am going to see if I can find my copies of these posts, so I can post them again.

I am going to Peru soon. I can't wait to post about it.

Jordan Peterson likes ayahuasca:

[/video]

I flew out of Houston to Lima on Friday 19 May. I slept on a bench in the aiport, and my flight took off for Iquitos at 5am. I got there, and the owner of the Ayahuasca Foundation had hired a car to pick us up.

We were actually a day early, but I wanted to give Iquitos an extra day. This made it easier to adjust to the heat and humidity, which had worried me initially. I looked for a gym on Saturday and actually took a lot of time to walk around Iquitos.

We were checked into the Hotel La Casona for two nights. The foundation only paid for one night at the end and one at the beginning of the retreat. So, I ended up paying for one of the nights there.

Iquitos is very out of the way and totally out of the American orbit. A Western Union office was the only American business I saw. It truly seemed like a different world. It's also a city of half a million which is only accessible by air and water--no roads.

On Monday, we rode on a van for about an hour and then a boat for another. We walked about five minutes after disembarking and went to our rooms. It was Monday, and we had our first of six ceremonies.

Ayahuasca ceremonies were on alternate nights--Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. During the day we had other activities and quite a bit of free time. We had three meals a day, adhering to a jungle diet. It was mostly fruits with rice, quinoa, fish, and some eggs.

We had some other rituals--two other purges, including chiric sanango. We were given drinks, one of which was a blood-brain medicine.

We also had vapor baths. The plants would be boiled in water, and then we would sit over the vapors for about ten minutes.

If you have done lots of ayahuasca or an ayahuasca virgin, a retreat will give you a great experience. You will get out there in the rain forest, and I was disconnected for eleven days. It's definitely a chance to connect with people from all over the world.

You may not need to go to the jungle to drink ayahuasca. You will find it an amazing experience either way probably. There are retreats elsewhere. Iquitos is the mecca though.

I got a private message about my trip, so I figured I should share some of what I answered in the email. This is general observation:

Give yourself an extra night or two when you show up. I stayed at Hotel La Casona for about $30 per night. You will adjust to the weather.

Just wear your clothes for two days instead of one. You will take less stuff, and nobody will care if you are a little dirty.

Take a pair of shoes made for hiking. You will have an opportunity to go on jungle walks. At the Foundation, you will have an opportunity to fish--you don't need anything for that though. You can swim in the river, so take your swim suit. So, you will want two pairs of shoes.

I don't know what the policy is on skinny dipping. Of course, we were so far out that nobody would have called the cops on us.

Take a head lamp--with the red-light option. A small flashlight will help as well. Remember that it's 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. It gets dark around 6pm.

You probably won't be able to have sex on your retreat. There is not much sound-proofing in the accomodatins.

I suppose people have had sex in the jungle, and it's certainly a possibility. Take a blanket or even a tarp if you plan on doing this. Plus, be prepared.

Respect the rain forest. Respect the animals, the plants, and the water. LEAVE NO TRACE.

If you have a lot of stuff, you may want to find storage. You won't need a lot of stuff in the rain forest. Here was my location:

Something shifted, and the scene turned horrific. The moon was the sun, shrunken to a white dwarf, its life-sustaining heat and energy long since radiated away, barely illuminating the chill cinder of the earth. I was seeing the future, long after humanity, and all of life, has vanished from the earth. The flame of consciousness has flickered out in the eternally expanding cosmos, and it has reverted to dumb, blind, painless, meaningless matter, as it must.

I have just spent the last couple of weeks in Sydney, Australia.

Ayahuasca is extremely popular here, especially in the under 35 age group - men and girls.

Every weekend ceremonies are held at secret locations in the Mangrove Mountain area north of Sydney.

I know many RVF members have deep experience with Ayahuasca - are you expecting a change in global consciousnesses as more people have had this experience with breaks down our traditional cultural ways of perceiving what life is really about?

Been thinking hard about talking a trip down to the jungle recently. I've been wanting to do it for years. Now especially I think it's been calling me. Shit hit the fan in my life recently and I've decided to pack up and bounce for awhile, maybe for good. I've been planning Southeast Asia but recently been thinking maybe it would be a good idea to start down in the jungle then head out East to reflect and get my shit worked out.

Recently my ego has been taken a huge hit and I'm starting to realize that my ego has likely been the main thing that's been holding me back for so long, in every facet in my life.

I think I need a reset, a swift kick in the ass.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I was thinking Arkana Spiritual Center (https://www.pulsetours.com/) it has the best ratings on Ayaadvisor.org. Pricing seems reasonable, maybe a little more than I want to spend but the lower price options seem to have a few negative ratings and I tend to look at negative ratings before positive because you never really know how many reviews can be fake.

Is ayahuasca like tripping on DMT except instead of it lasting 3 minutes it lasts for four hours?

Good approach, Biz. I haven't done aya but have used cannabis and psilocybin in shamanic journey work. I would be careful going too far from the beaten path in terms of jungle / remote operations. Some people that know people can get you a hookup in most western countries. I feel psilocybin is a good way to start as you can control dosage and start with a lighter trip.

Yes, from my understanding they are similar but have distinct differences - although DMT can really take you into 'machine elf-land' and ayahuasca is often a more symbolic, earth-review process. Check out Terence McKennas YT vids on the subject.

DMT is basically going 0 to a 1000 in a second and it blasts you apart and you are "there." Ayahuasca feels more holistic, organic, and if I could say, a lot more pleasant. You need at least a third of a day for ayahuasca, a special diet, but for a quick trip, I feel as if the DMT clears out my chakras and I'm ready to dominate. Both are great for raising one's vibration and stepping outside of this dimension.
