Zinc in the morning right when I wake up to get me ready for the day, magnesium in the evening with B6 and theanine.

It's the best of both worlds and you get full absorption.

Does the theanine have any effect on your sleep?

I take theanine right after I wake up and then after lunch and it really keeps me focused and gives me an alert calmness, so I've always worried about taking it closer to bed time. I also take magnesium at night so maybe that will balance it out?

What have you experienced with it?

Taking it without caffeine makes you calmer. I usually take it around 8pm if I'm not going out, then read for a few hours before bed. It relaxes me without putting me to bed and allows me to focus. Melatonin and chamomile tea put me to bed.

So what is the deal with magnesium?

Reading through some old threads on the forum I decided to get a magnesium supplement, however I decided to go for magnesium oil as apparently the body absorbs it easier through the skin than it does by digesting a tablet.

When I rub the oil on my skin gets quite itchy, has anyone else had a similar experience with the oil? Any idea why it causes skin to itch?

I take magnesium threonate because it best crosses the BBB. In practice, I find this to be true. In fact, I find that anything over 10-20mg is too much. The felt results for me are increase dream depth and clarity, and memory enhancement.

Other magnesiums give me stomach discomfort at the required doses.

I like to combine magnesium with high dose B1, to enhance energy metabolism and up-regulate dopamine receptors. Magnesium is required with B1 (apparently) and so it makes sense to make the most out of your magnesium supplementation.

I think its the same sensation as salt water.

I originally had the same problem. Either it goes away over time, or I get used to it. Or I probably just scratch myself subconsciously.

I take magnesium citrate in the morning with a little butter for absorption, then zinc picolinate with animal fats in the evening.
I would say it rounded out the sexual effects of the zinc, which I'd been taking solo for a good while before it.
I also laugh more, in a hearty way; I'm noticeably more relaxed.

I've been searching for info on the topic and in almost every case the suppliment is only touched upon briefly. My bottle says to take 1 250mg tablet. Is that good when paired with my 50mg zinc or should I take more of either?

I also saw that magnesium is in ZMA and some users take that before they sleep. So, is it best to take this stuff before bed?[Image: huh.gif]

Edit:Also, I'm planning on taking some melatonin before I sleep, is it a bad idea to pair all of these suppliments together?

Magnesium is a game changer if you are even a little bit deficient.

Around December I began to get dizzy spells and tremors, By January I was full blown dizzy/lightheaded and just not in it, The doctors couldn't find a thing wrong with me so I began to self diagnose, Long story short after popping 1000 Mg of Magnesium Biglycinate I started to sleep better, feel better, be better.

It took about a month for my levels to finally stabilize to the point where I no longer felt dizzy or off, I will continue taking it for a year or so to build up my reserves.

Benefits I have personally experienced,
> Awesome sleeps, I take 400 mg before bed
> Straightened out my dizziness
> More comfortable > less anxiety I guess you could say
> Had some damaged muscles in my leg that ached > That is now gone ( Pops up once in a while but min )
> Knee pain from to many squats disappeared.

Yes, though the effect should become more mild over time. I used to put it on 10-20 minutes before a shower to avoid the dryness and itchiness.

Do you guys think 200 mg a day is enough? I take 2 pills of the 'Doctors Best' brand which is 200mg. I used to take 400 mg of another brand, but because I didn't feel like popping 4 Mag pills a day, I've kept it at 200. Not sure if this is a waste or it's good enough.

Thanks for the feedback. I've only been using it for a few weeks but I have slept better and do feel more relaxed since starting, I hadn't actually given it much thought till reading these replies but it has had a noticeable effect. Hopefully the itching will fade through time.

Magnesium definitely helps you have a deeper sleep. It's definitely recommend for guys who are prone to waking up in the middle of the night. I started taking it this year and I'll echo what MikeCF said, it's a gamechanger.

Magnesium is one of the few supplements that creates noticeable changes for me. I sleep deeper and recover faster. I take between 500-800mg a day, 90% of it right before bed but sometimes when I wake up or at lunch.

I like this Albion Chelated Magnesium Glycinate from Swanson Ultra because:

1. Chelated Magnesium, because chelated minerals are supposed to have higher absorption.

2. Swanson is the best company.

3. Affordable

4. Comes in gelatin tablets for easy swallowing. I used to take the Doctor's Best 100mg tabs but choking down 6-8 of those dry pills was not fun.

Is the main benefit of magnesium deeper sleep? I started taking zinc again after 6 months without it and I'm having deep sleep already as it is. I wake up feeling as if I've been sleeping for a week.

I doubt I get enough of it through diet, so I'm probably deficient in it as well.

The main reason why I take it is for a deeper sleep but there are other benefits namely:

»»Improves brain function
»»Raises testosterone levels
»»Maximizes protein synthesis
»»Decreases inflammation
»»Improves bone health
»»Improves insulin sensitivity
»»Detoxifies the stress hormone cortisol
»»Improves bowel movements and digestive related diseases
»»Aids in bringing down abdominal fat and central obesity
»»Aids in the prevention of cramps and muscle tears

I usually take about 1000mg at night and sleep like a baby

So what is the deal with magnesium?

I'm officially on team magnesium. Most supplements are horseshit and it's rare I find something to add to my stables of optizinc, vitamin D, and collagen hydrolysate. Over the last few months I've been taking 200mg of magnesium citrate every night and felt mild sleep improvement and a mild raise in my aggression/T-levels. I've since switched to a topical magnesium (Life-flo's Magnesium chloride brine from Zechstein seabed). I use double the recommend dose, which is 8 sprays/132mg to my shoulders every night. The effects are 2-3x amplified vs the higher 200mg dose of oral magnesium. I've also been having vivid and highly memorable dreams, which is rare for me.

I'm going to keep experimenting with the doses and probably try using a topical in addition to the citrate and perhaps a glycinate. I encourage you guys out there that are already getting benefits from magnesium to give a topical form a try.

Edit: Didn't realize I use the exact magnesium Mike cites in his article. Can't recommend this stuff enough

I got magnesium oil once. I was putting it on my feet, but it kept coming off and staining my sheets. You do shoulders?

Here's the link for what I got. It's a spray, which I'm guessing makes it easy to rub in then pouring out oil and lathering it on. Each pump isn't that much volume and doing 4 pumps per shoulders takes ~5 seconds to rub in. Sometimes I also do inner groin/neck-anywhere with a lot arteries to get in the bloodstream quick. Heads up I haven't researched it extensively, so there might be somewhere more optimal but shoulders has worked great for me.

This is the one I use:
http://jarrow.com/product/134/Magnesium_Optimizer

It also supplies Taurine and B-6, which helps with the absorption of Magnesium. I am taking 200 mg per day + what I get from the multi-vitamin.

The extra magnesium was recommended by my urologist. It had a noticeable impact on followup tests I had.

redbeard, I use that one as well. Noticed it was very potent the first few months I used it but it really died off.

Have since changed to Magnesium Citrate Pills (Sundown) 200 MG. TBH, they are a little too effective so I take one every few days otherwise I get too sleepy.

Will check out the swanson oil.

I would guess that the type of magnesium you are taking is giving you the shits. Some kinds absorb well and make you very restful. Other kinds have less than pleasant effect on the stomach and causes pooping a lot.

I've been taking ZMA (which contains Magnesium) for some days and I have been experiencing very deep sleep ever since.

I frequently wake up in the middle of the night, but ever since I started taking it I haven't had this problem.

So what is the deal with magnesium?

I recently read article (not in English, so I won´t share it), that said the most of population is lack of magnesium, because it cannot be delivered to body by natural way (food,...) anymore.
The problem is that magnesium you usually buy in drugstores is "oxide". That won´t change anything except the need to poop. You must search for magnesium "citrate".

There's no issue taking zinc and magnesium together before bed on an empty stomach, right?

I know ZMA contains them both together. But I've already been taking zinc and since Mg just came in, I don't want to limit its absorption in any way. I want to be able to notice the difference it makes (if any).
