The Bangkok Thread

Okay so I have lived in Bangkok for just over a year and figure I would create a data sheet as the last one done was in 2011.

Where to stay in Bangkok

I would suggest staying around sukhumvit area, this is the new boom area of Bangkok, has a sky train for easy transport, a lot of trendy bars and restaurants, clubs and is close to the RLD of Nana cowboy and Nana Plaza.

The areas I would suggest are the following, each area has a BTS stop and I list them in order of BTS stops:

Nana- this is bang in the middle of the bar girl scene, very touristy, go go bars and free lance hookers are on your door stop. Lots of hotels and fast food places. You will be harassed by taxi drivers and tuk tuk drivers if you stay here. A lot of street vendors selling illegal goods such as Viagra, tasers, DVDs and other stuff.

Asoke – Asoke is very similar to Nana as it has Soi cowboy close by, it also connects the BTS with the MRT which is an underground metro service to get you to other parts of Bangkok. Has many hotels nearby, malls and a good selection of restaurants mostly packed with tourists. You will get hassled here by taxi and tuk tuk drivers. Big hooker scene and freelancers.

Phorm Phong – Now you start to get away from the total tourist parts of Bangkok, you will be harassed less by, tuk tuk drivers and be treated more like an expat. The area has a small park nearby, a mall and lots of hooker bars (Soi 22). However most of them are very relaxed and easy going, easy to have a chat inside, music not to loud. Many massage parlours around here also. A smaller hook scene and freelancers.

Thong lo - Thong lo at the time of writing is considered the “hip” place to be, it has a huge list of nice restaurants, bars and clubs. A lot of expats living here, mainly western and Asian. Almost a 0 bar girl scene here, any girl you meet around here is most likely a normal girl, unless you go to a G club. From Thong lo outwards, you will not be harassed by taxi or tuk tuk drivers for anything.

Ekkamai- Kind of like the little sister to Thong lo, not as big or as flash, but still keeps up there with some nice “hipster” style bars, not as many good restaurants but has a cinema nearby and apartments/hotels cheaper than Thong lo. Almost a 0 hooker scene here , has a few G clubs in Soi 63.

Phar Khanong- Not much goes on here, a very typical Thai area, nothing of interest for playboys. If you go quite far down Soi Phar khanong (soi 71) there are a few Thai styled go go bars. The girls usually don’t tend to speak much English, but drinks are much cheaper here.

On nut - A good budget area to live in, tons of apartments for cheap prices, starting around 5,000 baht upwards. Has two huge supermarkets near by, a lot of street food and good priced hotels. Also has a lot of Thai style go go the deeper you go into soi on nut 77.

Okay anything past on nut, is not really worth talking about. If you are planning on staying long term or short, the areas of living I would suggest would be Phrom Phong/Thong lo and Ekkamai. If you are on a budget On nut is a very interesting place to live. Asoke/Nana I wouldn’t want to stay there too long, too many tourists and the place feels like a tourist trap.

The area above discussed is the Sukhumvit area, and I have mentioned each place in order of its metro stop. Ratchada Is another area of Bangkok you could stay in, but I never stayed there so I won’t comment.

Hotels

I have done a review on my website about Bangkok hotels, so I won’t go into too much detail here as I don’t want to repeat my self. The things I would look for when booking a hotel are:

Does it have a safe? – You never know what people may steal when your room is unattended, or what the girls may take when you bring them back.

Is it close to a main road? – It can be annoying finding a taxi if your hotel is tucked deep into a Soi, may have to walk 5-10 minutes in the heat which is not a good thing.

Is it guest Friendly? – Well that doesn’t need to be explained. All the hotels I linked have all three.

Short term apartments

If it very hard to find month to month apartments, a few good serviced apartments:

Ekkamai prestige
The Green bells on nut/Ekkamai

Other ways to get short term apartments are to check Thai craiglist. I have a list of budget Bangkok apartments on my blog, I have stayed in them all, all offer month to month and I have no problems with any.

Long term apartments

They can be found all over the internet, you will usually pay 1 month advance rent, then 2 months deposit. Leases usually start 6months +.

None Hooker night clubs

For a full look at Bangkok night clubs visit the blog link as its has a lot of detail. For a summary see below:

Route 66 – Open every day, gets busy around midnight, expect weekends where it gets busy from 10pm. Has a lot of Thai girls who are very welcoming to westerns. #1 place for westerns to find a girl in Bangkok. Located in RCA, plays rnb and hip hop, also has a Thai live band playing in another room.

Slim/Flix – Same as route 66, bit harder for westerns but still have a good chance. located in RCA. Plays hip hop and the second room plays house music. Flix closes around 5am.

Funky Villa – In thong lo, plays a mixture of hip hop and Live Thai music, mostly full of Thais. Much harder to get girls here, a nice place, bit small.

Demo – Next to Funky villa, plays mostly house music, same type of girls as funky villa, not many westerns.

Safe house – is an after hours club located a few meters away from demo, usually gets busy after 2am.

Nung Len – Located in ekkamai, plays a mix of hip hop and live thai music. Hard to get a girl here, I would say some of the hottest girls I have seen visit this place.

Levels- Located near Asoke/Nana, on the top of a roof top, good music. Mixture of hookers and normal girls.

Wip – This is an afterhours club, gets busy from 2am, mostly full of Thais, hard to get girls, music is hip hop mixed with house, good place. Can smoke inside here, may get smokey.

Scratchdog- Another afterhours clubs, gets busy from 2am. Most suited for western Asians or Japanese’s/Koreans to get Thai girls. Much harder for westerns as the girls here seek an Asian man. Small % of hookers, usually around the DJ booth, they can smoke inside here, so it can get quite smokey.

Koh san road- full of backpackers a few hookers and some Thai girls. I don’t go there.

If I missed out any clubs, it’s most likely means they are not worth going too.

Hooker Night clubs

All of these don’t get busy until after 2am, so no point going before that.

Spicy – mixture of westerns and hookers, some black people, gets a rep for having a lot of fights. I would not go here. Located near Siam. Has some Russian working girls.

Insomnia- I have a review of insomnia, it’s a fun place to go, 80% of girls are working girls. Located in Asoke.

Climax- usually has a live band playing a mixture of Thai and western songs, 80%+ hookers, fun place, located between Nana/Asoke.

Bossy – I forgot where this is, but don’t go, 80%+ hookers, very sleazy, has some Russian working girls.

Swing- free entry, located next to Spicy, opens at 6am, free entry and sometimes you can bring your own bottles inside. Lots of ladyboys and hookers.

Mixx- has some backpackers who got lost and a decent mix of normal girls and hookers. You MUST WEAR trousers to be allowed in, can be rented at 300baht.

Bash- labelled as an “upscale” after hours, full of gold diggers and hipsters, way over priced. Located soi 11 near Asoke/nana.

Just because you pull a girl from the above clubs and she doesn’t mention money in the taxi or after you do the deed that does not mean shes not a hooker or your awesome and banged a girl without paying. Some girls are very shy when it comes to asking about money. So whenever you leave with a girl from the following places ALWAYS ask if she is a hooker or not. Chances are she is.

Once again if I’ve left out any clubs, it’s most likely means they are not worth going too.

Online dating sites

I have a brief detail blog post about thai dating sites which you can all read, I would suggest using them if you want to meet girls. They are a VERY VERY GOOD resource!

Cost of living in Bangkok

I managed to live in bangkok for around $1000 a month on average. You can go as low as $800 I think but you would need to live on the outskirts of Bangkok. I would say the average person is going to need around $1500 a month to have a very good life style. Can also check numero.com for the price of things.

Taxi meter starts are 35 baht
Street food starts at 30baht upwards
Bottle of water 6baht
Bottle of vodka in clubs appox 1,500baht
Cigarette boxes around 85baht/ Thai brand 40baht

Bangkok safety

I have never felt in danger every, just use common sense. Don’t ever get Thai people angry or start a fight on one, because everyone in a 50 meter area will come and beat you up. I never saw any trouble in my whole year of Thailand.

Motorcycles are quite dangerous, I would always suggest wearing a helmet or even buying your own like I did.

Drugs

Can be gotten, just never get them off a tuk tuk driver or near a tourist area, chances are you are being set up. I never done drugs in Thailand nor do I suggest anyone else too.

Thoughts on Thai girls

Overall Thai girls are very sweet and nice, they will go the extra mile to take care of you and from what it seems they fall in love very quick. Due to language barriers it’s hard to have many meaningful conversations with them.

Some Thai girls seem to go be erratic and go crazy after a while, for various reasons, I could go into great depth about this but I won’t. I would best describe them like a snowflake, no two are ever the same.

Ladyboys

If they are your thing once again use Thai dating sites as I suggested, you could be able to have sex with quite a lot with no issues what so ever, they are very keen.

Blow Job bars

The main three on Sukhumvit are:

lollipop 1 – Soi 10
Dr bjs – Soi 7/1 ( Dr BJ review)
Lolitas bar- soi 8

700baht for a pop, 1,000 for the “hot girls” in some.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, sorry for spelling errors.

Pretty spot on. Only thing Id add is last time I went to ScratchDog it was filled with Asian tourists and pros. Seems others have had the same experience recently. Used to be my go to after hours spot. I'll have to go back soon and see what's up.

I just would add art gallery / embassy / cultural center / special event possibilities, for something different and for penetrating different social groups.

Bangkok Arts and Cultural Center (BACC) across from MBK, the National Gallery near Khaosan Road, Alliance Francaise, Goethe Institut, etc.

Events are listed daily in the Bangkok Post and the local English language magazines you find in the English/Irish pubs. Looks like Bangkok Art Map stopped publishing, too bad, that was a good resource.

I like art gallery opening receptions - free drinks and hors d'oeuvres and high quality women often attend.

These events are also cheap dates which automatically display value and and provide social proof.

You lived in Bangkok on $1,000 USD? Fuck. I don't know how you guys do it.

I remember many years ago my budget was just $1,500 a month and feeling like I was counting every baht. I was stressed out the whole time.

I looked at your spread sheet and you show that your food budget was 100 baht a day most days. WTF? Are you 4'11'' and 97 pounds? I could eat maybe one meal for that much. Do you not eat any meat?

I must be a spoiled little bitch.

This may have been covered in another thread, but which places would you recommend for picking up female Asian tourists in BKK, if any?

I never did any of that, but I would suggest malls are a good place such as Terminal 21 and central world/MBK. Some of the better unis too, although they are further away from Bangkok and may not be as good to live there. Also poorer areas usually means there English is not as good. night market in on nut is good, right next to the BTS. I have had friends just go there and eat and a waitress comes up and hands a number from some other girl whos there (happend twice with two different friends of me while we ate). And i have also gotten a number from a ladyboy there. This place has been picking up with tourists lately and what appears to be poor western school teachers.

im about 82kg during my time in BKK. my meals were something like that

Cereal

rice and fried chicken

rice and pork

som tam + chicken leg

tuna sandwich + crisps

snacks in between like fruits.

I ate mostly street food or at these japensees "don " places, they are quiet cheap. Not the best meats or quality food. I did about 1-2 week eat at a new restaurant though. Usually sushi as i think the value in Bangkok is great compared to back home.

tourist? well "korea town" is located near soi 12, that is a area full of Korean restaurants, you could try there. Siam square (in Siam) will have a lot of Asian tourists as well as MBK. I would suggest all touristy places, as they love to take photos. So thats the grand palace, Koh san road in the day, wat arun, near the chayo river.

Just a random thought that went through my head. It may sound weird, but let's say you're there and you feel like a bit more variety.

I remember many years ago my budget was just $1,500 a month and feeling like I was counting every baht. I was stressed out the whole time.

My budget in Taipei was 1,500 U.S Dollars a month. At one point I was going out four times a week and was still breaking even/making a profit.

I would stretch 1500 U.S Dollars far and wide in Bangkok haha. Could live on 1000 U.S Dollars and still have on OK life. (Would only be going out twice a week TOPS though).

I used to be a massive Marxist/anti-consumerist so maybe that helps haha, but I just don't really buy 'stuff'. A lot of my friends buy electronics/stuff for the house/expensive food and stuff but I'm usually content with a book in the park or something, followed by a big drinking session.

(Though I spend a lot on going out and clothes. I never count the money when I go out and chase women as that's counter-productive.)

I could put all my current possessions in a big gym bag plus a back-pack. 90% of that would be clothes.

A cheap apartment and pre-drinking really keeps the cost down I find. Also never been a bottle service guy at a club. I'll turn up drunk, approach, go for a dance then will have about three more beers in the club.

(Though in Bangkok you need to be open to bottle service to get traction usually. Unless you get invited to tables which is what I did the last two times I went out)

I'm admittedly a simple man though and am one of the more 'Hippy-like' members of the forum. (Though I don't dress like one. God damn I hate Hippies)

Afarang:

I always wondered man, why did you never go down the English teaching route?

I know the pay is shit and you hate children but it's pretty easy to find jobs around the 40,000Baht mark and you know how to live on a budget well. Plus it seemed like you really liked Bangkok.

I spend $1,500 a month and wouldnt want to live on less. 12k condo and nearly 2k gym membership is probably a big part of the difference between 1k and 1.5k. Going to the gym and back 3x a week brings the cost of my gym to about 3k monthly.

I buy basically no material possessions, but spend 2-3k each time I go out. I also try to get a good amount of protein in each meal, which brings up my food budget. A typical street food dinner, which just gave me food poisoning, is 2 legs of Gai yaan and a plate of laarb moo. 150 baht.

This is definitely something I've been looking out for.

I love Thai girls but I'd love to capture some Koreans whilst their guard is down (less Confucianism when you're on holiday).

There are often Koreans in RCA. Each time I've been I've always found one.

Lots of Korean guys scattered around the place too. Had conversation with them in RCA, Levels and Khao San.

Then again, I can sniff one out a mile away haha (Wide, cosmetic-ridden face)

Not see any Japanese girls yet.

Would love to find some Taiwanese girls actually

I lived in Bkk for 6 months, and had an awesome time. It was rubbish for finding wife material, but good for having a laugh.

I would add DOGS to your datasheet. During the night and in the back streets you can come across aggressive packs of dogs. Best defence is to carry an umbrella. The locals train dogs by beating them with sticks, so anything that looks like a stick will usually scare off a dog. Also of course an umbrella is a good defense against the torrential rain that strikes without warning in the wet season.

Patpong was rubbish - full of touts and overpriced shows. Nana and Soi Cowboy are best, except if you're in Bkk for a while, in which case you should get to know the bars of Soi 22.

Koreans are by far the easiest nationality to spot I've ever seen. You'll notice a girl walking a block in front of you is Korean before you know she's Asian.

The masses of Japanese girls seem to have a vary narrow range of travel destinations. When talking about places she's traveled, if she's been abroad at all, odds are it's either Guam, Korea, Hawaii, maybe Shanghai/Hongkong and MAYBE Taiwan. Some girls have also studied abroad in Australia, Canada or America. Other than those, I rarely hear any other names.

The bars on 22 are filled with ugly whores and fat white dudes in cargo shorts. Nothing worth seeing on soi 22.

Haha no it was pretty decent actually. Name is UTD mansion.

It was more expensive but we could haggle them down because we were 3 guys moving in three different studios.
I regretted moving there because my uni was on the other side of the city but if you aren't bound to any duties, I'd recommend this place (except the matress).
Also, make sure everything is working fine in your room before taking it, because if your A/C doesn't work, you're fucked.
Remember, be ruthless and haggle if you want to stay there for more than just one or two weeks. Tell them you want a Flat TV, refrigerator etc.
We got so much better rates and conditions than other westerners because we were not afraid of seeming rude.

im not white for one. Two it seems like work, and I don't like work lol.

And yes its always good to open a bottle, remember you can always put a bottle back and go and collect it next time round with no extra charge. I always went out with 4-5 group, so it was cheap to get a bottle.

On Nut is pretty good for street game. After working hours the BTS station is full of cute girls that are on their way book home. Also you will never run out of girls at the night market, which is a nice place to have food. Beside of this there is not much around, but it is close to the center and the accomodations are cheap.

Well one of the best universities is actually direct in the city center. It is called Chulalongkorn University and just a few minute walk from MBK. Most of this students have been abroad. So if anybody struggles finding english speaking girls in BKK, then this is the place to go.

Talking about the budget the biggest factor is your drinking attitude. You can stay in a decent condo, eat well and live here with 1000$ a month. But if you want to go out two or three times a night and get drunk, then you can easily spend another 1000$ on drinks....
