Conor Oberst Accused of Rape

Anyone read about this?

He's the indie singer-songwriter from Bright Eyes. The accusation first came about in the comments on XO Jane (no surprise there), then she started her own blog about -- which has now disappeared. That's probably because he's now considering legal action. The commenter claims he raped her when she was 16. Buzzfeed has more details.

If the allegations are false, I'm wondering if this might not mark a turning point in how the media and society start to view rape allegations from now on. Unlike with professional athletes, the guys in indie bands are people that media types relate to and if it can happen to them, well...

Conor Oberst Accused of Rape

Slow day for me...

So I clicked the link and copied and pasted her reply. I love how she just wanted support and not attention, but then felt the need to blog about it. Reminds of people who say they don't want praise, but desperately seek it.

Quote:Quote:

Look, I didn’t intend for any of this to happen. I was a somewhat regular commenter on xojane and felt safe there. Call it dumb, naive, etc but when I hit that post button, I did not think my comment would be anything more than an exchange with one or two other commenters sharing their stories. Was I stupid to think that making an accusation about Conor like this was just going to remain some blip in the comment section of a feminist website? Obviously. But I didn’t realize that Conor was still *that* popular, to be honest. I guess I felt too safe in that community. I had no intention for this to be all over the place, I really did not.

I am not looking for my 15 minutes of fame or to sue or to let anyone else make money off of this situation (though some are already trying), I am not looking for anything. I am not trying to ruin this man (and that isn’t going to happen regardless). All I was looking for when I made the comment with my story was support from the ladies on that forum that I felt safe opening up to. But now this has been spread all over everywhere and I feel like I need to speak up for the facts, for my character and for my intent (or lack there of).

I wish I could say I was really brave and I was speaking out for the benefit of other victims of rape who may feel discounted in their experiences and alone. But I am not that brave. I am speaking now because everyone else is speaking for me and a lot of it isn’t accurate. But now that it’s out there, if anyone can relate to it and not feel so alone or needs any support, I’m here for that.

I am going to open this blog up for dialogue. You are welcome to send me questions. However, for the safety of my family and my sanity, I will only answer reasonable, respectful messages. I will not engage with absolutists who have already made their minds up about me and want to use this forum as a way to fuck with me or make this experience any harder. I just won’t. I will not answer messages that I consider to be out of line, too invasive, would jeopardize the safety & privacy of my family, are too triggering for me as a victim or just out right hate. I will not do it.

I do not expect anyone to coddle me or hate him or to believe me. That’s your choice and has no bearing on my life, but I do expect people to treat me with dignity and respect-this was and is very painful for me. It’s really hard to have my experience smeared everywhere and picked apart, over analyzed, people criticizing me who know nothing of it, etc. But I made the stupid mistake that opened these flood gates so, I will deal with it. But please just try to be respectful-that shouldn’t be so hard. Please refrain from telling me what I could’ve/would’ve/should’ve done. That is highly offensive to any victim of anything and not your place. Please respect my privacy for the safety of my family.

Thank you.

Did she provide any details? E.g.,
- how she came to be alone with him
- was she drinking
- did she say "No" in unequivocal terms
- did she resist, forcefully or otherwise
- did she leave immediately afterward
- did she tell anyone immediately afterward
- etc.

It's easy to say "I was raped". A little harder when you have to flesh out the details which could come back to bite you in the ass if fabricated. Or, if not a blatant lie, could make the case that it was simply 'regret rape'.

This sort of thing makes it obvious to me that a non-trivial percentage of rape accusations are the result of a toxic mixture of attention whoring, repressed sexual fantasies, and diagnosable mental illness.

Exactly, which is why I hope this blows up. The Duke Lacrosse case wasn't enough to open middle America's eyes to the rape lies we've been fed. The SPWL crowd didn't care. But this guy is one of their own.

If this comes out as false and he successfully sues, from there on in every time a guy gets falsely accused he'll be able to say "But look at what happened to Conor" and people will stop and think. He'll become a symbol.

This is the kind of accusation that inadvertently causes social change and, IMO, will be more effective than all the blogs with stats about false rape charges. If it's false, that is.

Au contraire, DOBA... being "one of their own" is no match for the awesome power of RAPE. The moment it is invoked, people retroactively classify the offender as "not really one of us, otherwise he couldn't have done it", and all his former goodwill is destroyed. Just look at Assange. A sizable portion of the public actually believes the ludicrous claims against him simply because they have been conditioned to do so.

Maybe you're right. There's already White Knighting in the Buzzfeed comments that's being voted upwards -- and written by exactly the type of guy who looks like you'd expect him to. Oh well.

Good for him.

If the accusations are false, she deserves to pay him the whole one million. I'm sure his reputation has been damaged quite a bit from this, and I'm sure he's going to lose out on a lot of concert bookings and such because of it.

Great thing about that article is it names her, so you can google and see where else her name has been dropped. She's married, has a kid, is fat and accomplishing nothing in life - nothing too unexpected for an XOJane poster. The best part is this image on the Heavy.com article about her: (Joanie being the crazy bitch in question):

She's going to get crushed, and then declare bankruptcy to get out of it.

The lawsuit filed today outlines Faircloth’s history of inventing stories and personalities online in order to gain attention. Although her false statements about Oberst have since been deleted from the locations where they were initially posted online, Oberst's suit alleges that her malicious lies spread across the Internet and are archived by multiple blogs. Through his attorneys, Oberst requested that Faircloth recant her false accusations, but she ignored the requests. Oberst has thus been forced to proceed with this libel suit in order to set the record straight and to clear his name.

Classic feminist personality on display here: She is so desperate for attention and playing the victim that she resorts to lying and making up stories with a celebrity and when the real world via lawyers tell her to recant and admit her lies under threat of lawsuit and poverty she is unrelenting and sticks to her guns since no one has ever called her out before and the loss of her constructed victim identity would be too much of a blow to her self image.

I'm just happy they named her.

I've never understood why someone accused of rape is always named, but never the victim.

Women can easily recover from rape, especially if one NEVER HAPPENED. But does anyone ever recover from an accusation? Even if your'e proved 110% innocent?

Bump: the chick has just admitted the whole thing was baloney.

Celebrity false rape accusations will only raise awareness as to the reality of false rape accusations, and some demented women's capacity for bearing false witness.

Conor Oberst Accused of Rape

Great news, thanks for the update. That's four obviously false rape allegations I've read about in the past couple of weeks:

-Conor Oberst
-Mike Arrington
-Deric Lostutter, a story so ludicrous I can't find any semi-mainstream website that reported on it other than Jezebel (try googling his name)
-Cards Against Humanity guy, this one counts less because of his embarrassing response to it, but still counts anyways

Good news is the first two brought lawyers in and the third was consulting legal counsel. People can claim false rape allegations never happen because the process of involving police is too difficult, but that's a moot point - none of these four involved police and all are baseless accusations, in some cases many years after the fact. Lives and reputations damaged due to mentally unstable and/or narcissistic attention whores.

And you can't even say "never put your dick in crazy" because two of those guys never even had sex with the girl!

The more fighting back & slamdunk smackdowns like these that result, the better.

best comments from a jezebel article on this story

Quote:Quote:

This woman is a known con woman. She is known on Facebook as being a liar and a fraud. She makes up huge stories and lies and scams the shit out of people. I was in a Facebook group with her a couple of years ago and saw first hand the damage she causes. I am so glad she finally got called out on something.

Quote:Quote:

I met joanie faircloth on Facebook. She joined a few groups I was in. She lied constantly and even went as far as telling a friend if mine that she owned a house she would rent to her if she would move there. For months she continued this farce. My friend loaded up everything she owned and moved her children states away with the promise of a home that didnt exist. Joanie dipped on Her and Caused her to be homeless in a new state where she knew no one. Joanie deserves whatever she gets.

I think you're letting yourself off the hook a bit here. Your very slanted article reports these statements only insofar as you accuse Oberst of using them "in order to tear down both Faircloth and her side of the story". I think Jezebel owes an apology here as well.

Especially when that article claimed: "Why would she want to hurt Oberst? And why would someone lie about being sexually assaulted? What could be gained from that? Nothing, really."

Tracie Egan Morrissey (article author)

No. I reported on those contradictory statements because I was the one who unearthed many of them. I was very fair to both sides in my original piece and Oberst's team agrees.

Did you read that article all the way through? It absolutely casts doubt on her claims. She sounds like a disturbed person with a fixation on Oberst. You just read one sentence in the first paragraph, didn't you?

Quote:Quote:

Not to defend the MRA clusterfuckbrains on the other article, but Jezebel did say (in their original reporting on the article):

"Why would she want to hurt Oberst? And why would someone lie about being sexually assaulted? What could be gained from that? Nothing, really."
So, no, Jezebel did not just "report on Faircloth's history of contradictions." They actively agreed with the idea that the allegations must be true because they were made.

Quote:Quote:

I find myself incredibly frustrated with Jezebel's response to this story. Just as you rightfully call out people who commit rape (proven cases) you should call out assholes like Faircloth in this situation. Be outraged! This is a disgusting act that makes it more and more impossible for people actually raped to be believed. Wrong is wrong, and this woman is bullshit.

Quote:Quote:

Yeah, now that she admitted to lying. The comments in the original thread were way more supportive of her despite the glaring holes and inconsistencies in her story.

Quote:Quote:

I don't, however, see anyone saying that she should go to jail, which she should. I think it's also unfortunate that people seem to have a problem recognizing that Oberst is a victim here too. Yes, it's unfortunate that other rape victims may be hesitant to come forward lest they be accused of lying, but people shouldn't overlook the fact that accusations like this can ruin your life. People need to recognize that women can be evil as well.

From the older Jezebel article on the Oberst accusation:

"Why would she want to hurt Oberst? And why would someone lie about being sexually assaulted? What could be gained from that? Nothing, really."

The author, Tracie Morrissey, defends this comment after the recent revelations. She's delightfully unaware of the fact that crazy people don't need logical reasons to do crazy shit. The article otherwise entertains skepticism about the accusation, a little surprising for Jezebel.
