I hope the legalization program succeeds in Colorado. It would set the stage for weed legalization to sweep across the rest of the country.

I am also thinking about making a trip down to Denver to buy weed and support the pot businesses. The more successful this initiative is, the harder it will be to stop in the future.

That's awesome, I often have to fly to Denver for connecting flights from Edmonton, maybe next time I'll stop by for a couple of days to see how the legal weed scene is there. Good on Colorado for doing this, I will happily spend my tourist dollars there, hopefully more States follow this and eventually Canada too.

The one, major question I have about the future of legalized pot is employer drug testing. If weed becomes legally nationally, will it be legal for employers to restrict you from using a legal substance? You don't have employers firing people for drinking off the job.

Does Colorado require you to be a resident of the state to buy weed?

I'm worried about pigs suspecting that you're high while driving and testing. Weed stays in your system for a few weeks so don't know how that would work.

That's what I'm thinking too. Like if you smoked a week ago you're obviously not impaired, but if you took a drug test you'd fail for marijuana and technically you'd be "impaired"

Could create a lot of problems for pot smokers

No, but you are limited to buying up to 1/4 ounce at a time if you are from out-of-state. Colorado residents can buy up to 1 ounce at a time.

Is America even pretending to want a productive economy any more? If everyone is drunk and stoned - particularly the poorer classes too unintelligent or marginalised to have any chance of success in a post-industrial, knowledge-based economy and thereby more likely to abuse the drugs as an escape - then how does the infrastructure of society continue to function?

It just strikes me as the government chasing short-term financial game for long-term problems. Every stoner I've known has been a driftless moron who seemed to get dumber and less-focused with continued use.

I remember my Dad's advice when he caught me with pot as a kid and beat me senseless: "Buying drugs is for fools, the smart money is in selling."

Are we ever going to see a weed equivalent of a brand like Budweiser or Malboro? Now that weed can be sold openly it means you need to no longer have to rely on some neighborhood dealer or people with "connects". Most people drink Coors, Blue Moon, or whatever rather than brewing their own booze in their home. How long until some guy or group of guys starts a legit company dealing in weed that eventually goes big?

That is like saying everyone who has ever set foot in a bar and had a drink is a shiftless, lazy drunk who is doing nothing with their life.

If you use in moderation on the weekends or weeknights, while you are not on the clock, I don't see how it hurts you.

There's different types of employer drug testing, as far as I know the most stringent is the hair follicle one that can trace drug use back three months, I don't think that the use it in Canada. The one I"m familiar with is the urine test and I've done them several times, there's the lab test and strip test, they can both trace pot back to about 3-4 weeks (depending on body type, diet, exercise, etc). Another one that is more interesting is the saliva swab test which tests back only to the past 48 hours, this would be the most realistic one for employers to implement, smoke your brains out on Friday night and be good to go by Monday!

I said, 'stoner', not 'casual user'. That being said: continued use will overstimulate your reward system, creating apathy and dependence, much like hambeasts and their unhealthy reward relationships with sugary and fattening foods. Do they give off an aura of success that attracts partners? Girls would be far more interested in a guy with Blow.

THC use interupts the later stages of REM sleep. If you're lifting, you need undisturbed sleep for muscle recovery, so as to enable protein synthesis and release of HGH. Why put in the work at the gym only to sabotage your gains?

No offense but have you lived in the US? The people you're talking about were never deterred by marijuana laws in the first place. It's use is already extremely prevalent and even the government has admitted that they have been completely unsuccessful in putting a dent in it's proliferation. Weed is actually more accessible in the US than it's ever been, including states where it hasn't been legalized.

And as master_thespian pointed out, people can drink alcohol in moderation and even be "functional alcoholics". We have an extremely popular thread on this very board about people who have such a problem with drinking that they have to abstain completely (I don't mean that as a slight, it's very commendable). I hope you're not suggesting that alcohol be outlawed as well, considering history shows what an absolutely terrible idea prohibition was.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you usually ascribe to a ideology that calls for less government regulations and more freedom?

Bosch,

I like you and respect your posts greatly. But marijuana use is by far one of the least harmful substances you can do. Heck, THC has anticarcinogenic properties.

If you met me, You'd see that your generalizations on stoners isn't true. I'm a hard core stoner hah and look awesome as ever.

For what its worth, driving high is not the same as driving drunk.

I've smoked dope for a long time and I do think that it can have some negative affects and like all drugs, it affects different people differently. I know guys who smoke daily and are high performing businessmen, accountants, engineers, etc but then again, I know guys who live in their mom's basement and never amounted to anything because all they do is smoke dope all day. Then there's the chance that weed can really fuck your head up and this has been documented in the scientific community and I started a thread on it called "The downside of high", which you can find here..

As for me, I think smoking pot daily makes my mind fuzzier and I forget things, I"m just not as sharp. The most recent example of this would be a few days ago when I took a boat to a remote island off the Pacific coast of Colombia, I had bought a big bag the week before and was smoking daily but finished it off the night before I caught the boat. Then I got to the island and realized, "fuck, I forgot to buy some weed!", thankfully I scored some on the island but it was bunk.

Due to drug testing I don't smoke while I'm working (well, rarely anyway) and I find that I"m mentally more sharper when dealing with clients and co-workers. Again, my point is that it affects everyone differently and you should realize how it affects you and consume accordingly, just like booze, sex and greasy cheese burgers.
