Supreme Court strikes down Canada's prostitution laws

The Supreme Court of Canada has unanimously struck down the country’s major prostitution laws, saying that bans on street soliciting, brothels and people living off the avails of prostitution are arbitrary and create severe dangers for vulnerable women.

The ruling is one of the most significant since the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was enacted in 1982 and will alter a longstanding feature of the Canadian legal landscape, much like previous Charter rulings on gay marriage on abortion did. Laws against brothels and pimps go back to pre-Confederation days.

The ruling does not necessarily mean open season for prostitution. The Conservative government could still craft new laws that make prostitution or related offences criminal activities. If prostitution becomes legalized, cities would be faced with the challenge of where to permit prostitution and — if they refuse to permit it at all, or try to confine it to out-of-the-way places — potential constitutional challenges of their own.

Looks like it's full steam ahead now. It will take too much political capital to create new laws, especially with a divided conservative caucus and a looming election in a year.

This could be a boon for brothels, can we expect to see American sex tourism in Canada?

I'm pro legalizing prostitution, but what the hell is going on with Toronto?

It's become the clown show of the earth.

For context, prostitution in Canada was not criminal before this ruling. A man could call up a girl from Backpage, an escort company, etc. to meet up and pay for sex perfectly legally. However, activities related to prostitution such as running brothels, public solicitation or pimping were illegal. Now, it seems with this decision that even those are not criminal.

I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams, so why are you sharing all this information with me?

@ Soma

The cops could still get you for running a “common bawdy-house" which basically means if you do it out of your basement apartment that you rent from your landlord upstairs. Both you and him will be charged, plus he will get charged with living off the avails i.e "pimping".

It would be pretty interesting to see how things will be once they legalize all aspects of it in Canada.

This is an unlikely conclusion but perhaps with more liberal hooking laws the dudes will go that route instead of tolerating the fatties and such that populate greater toranto. Said fatties will feel the squeeze and start treating these men a little better loosing a bit of weight and stop going on dates to expensive places in fucking sweat pants. It's a long shot but maybe.

Massage parlours here are often quite a common site. In Chinatown in Toronto there's lots of them. In Edmonton you don't even have to go to Chinatown to find a rub n tug, you can go to a mall. Next to a baby store!

Call girls are very common here. It's huge in the oil patch. The police don't waste any resources trying to combat the issue. This won't change much in the big cities. There's already plenty of brothels in Toronto, on the hush hush. I can't see the city allowing brothels within its city limits even after the official law is passed.

The biggest visible impacts will be in boom-towns (Fort Mac, Cold Lake, Ft St John), and border towns (Sault Ste Marie, Windsor, Niagara Falls, Estevan etc).

Radical feminists here have already legitimized sex-work. One of their new empty "buzzwords" is being "sex-worker positive" meaning that there is nothing wrong with a women whom is a whore. I was a fly on the wall to a cringe worthy conversation with two extreme femenists and that is how so heard that. One was fat as he'll and a webcam whore, whom felt empowered to her line of work even though it was obvious she does it because she is a lazy fuck. The other was some rabbid 19 year old whom was dating a tranny.

This new legal framework makes me happy because there is big money to be made being a ghost investor in starting a brothel. As Toronto continues to get worse for single men business would only continue to grow. On the flip I'm worried now because beasts and fatties will try and shove another movement down my throat and they will try to flood the market.

This will be big for American travelers though. Plus I'm sure a lot of pros from the States will start coming up here also. All I see is dollar signs with this.

Where's El Mech, I need a business partner in this.
