Happy marriage study abandoned as husband becomes depressed

Agreeing to your partner's every demand might seem like the key to a stressless life, but one husband found it left him miserable.

A study to assess whether marriage improves if a husband agrees to all his wife’s demands had to be abandoned after the man sank into a deep depression within a fortnight.

Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand were hoping to test whether the key to a happy marriage lies in bowing to the whims of a partner and giving up the need to ‘always be in the right.’

In the experiment the husband was asked “agree with his wife’s every opinion and request without complaint.”

“Even if he believed the female participant was wrong, the male was to bow and scrape,” said researchers.

But after recruiting a couple for an initial pilot they were forced to scrap the project.

“The situation had become intolerable by day 12,” said Professor Bruce Arroll, “By then the male participant found the female to be increasingly critical of everything he did.

“He sat on the end of their bed, made her a cup of tea, and said as much. He explained the trial and then contacted the Data Safety Monitoring committee who terminated the trial immediately.”

Researchers found that during the study the man’s quality of life dipped from a relatively happy seven out of 10 to a miserable three out of 10 in just 12 days.

In contrast the woman’s happiness increased slightly from eight to 8.5 at six days.

A separate female who was being used as a control also abandoned the project after becoming ‘hostile’ that her happiness being constantly recorded.

Although the experiment was never completed, authors said their hypothesis suggested that ‘it’s better to be right than to be happy.’

They added: “It seems that being right is a cause of happiness, and agreeing with what one disagrees with is a cause of unhappiness.

“The availability of unbridled power adversely affects the quality of life of those on the receiving end.

“Many people in the world live as couples and we believe that it could be harmful for one partner to always have to agree with the other.

"However, more research is needed to see whether our results hold if it is the male who is always right."

The study was published in the British Journal of Medicine.

Let's categorize this study under the 'No Shit' file.

When a man acts like a pussy, the woman loses respect for him.

Women want to be lead, not coddled. Thus, we have the highest unhappiness levels of women that we have ever seen.

Men ceasing to be men = women trying to fill that void which never works.

Like I've said many times, if men worldwide started acting like men then feminism would cease to exist and the world would become harmonious.

So..Men become near suicidal when forced into slavery by women. Wow. I am glad we need more studies to confirm this fact.

How about we spend millions of dollars studying if women become happier by submitting to their husbands? All women want a strong, dominate man who commands their respect and earns their submission.

A submissive wife is a "happy wife." No woman is going to surrender the lead, and subsequently accept her place, to a doormat.

Show me a leaderless woman, and I will show you a woman whose self-misery is equal only to the "man" in her life.

As Mr. McQueen said, "No shit."

Old Arab saying.

"Women want fried ice."

Never try and make them happy.

It is impossible.

This will be interesting. I bet if the woman is happy during this experiment feminists will try and crush the findings.

I love the headline to this thread. It could be from 'The Onion'.

I bet the feminists are already spinning this as evidence of his 'fragile male ego'.

To make this a legit study, they should have at least conducted the exact same experiment in which the wife agrees with her husband's every opinion and request without complaint. Even if she believed her husband to be wrong, she was to bow and scrape.

Anyone wonder how that one would turn out?

I went to bmj.com and it looks like this is part of some Christmas 2013 series of joke articles .. They also have one about James bond.

Funny how this fact doesn't come up in the media coverage ....

BMJ published a study with a sample size of one? While the findings of this one are accidentally accurate, I have a hard time believeing it is not a joke.

Guys, you're missing a salient point: It was a INITIAL PILOT STUDY!

INITIAL PILOT STUDY

This means you use a very small sample size to get an idea of a few things like:

1.) How large your actual study should be based on things like

2.) How many variables you should actually be recording (i.e. in this case questions)

and

3.) Determine the variability of the population for the variables of interest. (more variation = bigger sample size required to get good results)

So the initial pilot study really is just them basically saying,"Lets try it with one couple to get an idea of how difficult it will be to actually do a large scale study in the field."

When you have a guy quit after 12 days for feeling like total shit you have an ethics nightmare in actually getting funding & approval for a larger scale study.

That is what is going on.
