Freakiest things you have seen on your travels

Plovdiv, Bulgaria late 90s

Elderly begging in the streets because their pensions were insufficient. Kids smoking cigarettes. Prostitutes openly standing outside in public during day time

Detroit during financial crisis

Couldn’t find a store that was open. Nearly everything around the auto show was closed down with depressing signs posted on the windows detailing the struggles the business owners were facing. Driving on the highway, off in the distance there were seemingly endless rows of houses that were boarded up/vacant, or otherwise in a deteriorated state.

Freakiest things you have seen on your travels

Interesting thread, lemme think.

-I was travelling in the Northern region of Ethiopia, Afar area, which supposedly is the hottest place on earth. Temperature was above 40 degrees at the moment and they said it could get about 50 degrees. Needless to say, the heat was destroying a white guy like myself and when stepping outside the airconditioned vehicle I could not last too long. There we are going around and the guide takes me to a place where there is salt formation. I see these nomad Afar people sitting in about 45 degrees heat the whole day shopping up blocks of salt bare-chested and carrying them to a truck. They do this for full days. I don't think they had it any better than the jews in the concentration camps, but they did it out of free will.

A bit further in the area we stopped at a small lake or better yet pool which was completely red, due to some geothermal activity in the ground. All around the pool were dead birds. They said birds that fly over just drop dead because of the toxic gasses. I asked what they thought was causing it but they didn't know. It was called the gateway to hell or something in that sorts and was known by all tribes there, because they used to make human sacrifices in the pool. I did a fast google search and didn't find any explanation.

-In the South of Colombia, I got word of the existence of a shaman that could see people's illnesses by looking at their urine. A person I knew had a family member that was cured of leukemia through this shaman while doctors gave him a month to live so I was interested. I had some local contacts and they offered to bring me there. We took a car and drove to some small village where few people go and then hiked a bit alongside a hill to arrive at this seer or wise man's cottage. There was a long line of people standing outside, all locals and there were old women who had a large variety of medicinal plants which they sold for cheap. After a while, it was my turn and I was allowed in. I recently did blood work and had a very good understanding of my current small health issues. Once inside I saw a very old and ugly man, with green teeth because he was chewing coca leaves the whole time (giving a light high). He welcomed me and said he was happy to see me. He explained that he was not a shaman, just a man that had gotten a gift which he used as was his purpose. This gift was given to him by an imaginary friend he had as a child who would take him on long walks in nature explaining him the purpose of all the plants they encountered and what they could cure. Only later, when the friend had left him, he understood that he was the only one who had seen him. At his departure, he had gotten the gift to see what illnesses people have and to foresee the future. I asked him if he knew when he would die and he said he got a vision of a woman that will visit him in the near future and the day after he would pass away. I handed him my bottle of urine and he started describing to a very good amount of detail exactly what my blood work had indicated, hinting to cholesterol, inflammation etc. Everything he said was spot on, except he mentioned I had an issue of acid reflux, which I said was not true. He looked at me strangely and carried on talking about other stuff. When I left he told me I should watch out. When returning to the city I would live in in the coming months, I would get robbed and that I should be careful when receiving money. He told me not to worry too much since I would only incur financial loss and no harm would be done to me. I thanked him, paid one dollar as a consultation fee and afterward bought some of the plants outside he recommended. All the people there and the ones I spoke to in the region had this man in very high regard and no one doubted his abilities. They also didn't question the unscientific nature of his supposed talent.

The next day I woke up with strong acid reflux, which only happens rarely.

A couple of months later, I thought about his other prediction and figured he had that one wrong. But he didn't. When withdrawing money from a cash machine in the city where I lived, my cards detail got copied somehow (common in Latin America) and a couple of hundred dollars were stolen from my account. My bank covered it completely so I didn't pay too much attention to it, but only later I realized it was basically exactly what he said. Financial loss, no physical damage, watch out when receiving money.
