Rankings are based on a number of criteria, including premature death, infant mortality, preventable hospitalizations, high school graduation rate, violent crime, health insurance, child poverty, obesity, diabetes, physical activity and immunizations.

Among other general findings:

- While 27.6 percent of adults are obese in the U.S., the percentage has not increased from the last year (it was 27.8 percent in 2012). The report also showed that 9.7 percent of adults have diabetes.
- The infant mortality rate has decreased 39 percent since 1990.
- Fewer people are dying from heart-related disease; cardiovascular deaths decreased 36 percent since 1990.
- Fewer people are also dying from cancer: Deaths from the disease decreased 3 percent since 1990.

Hawaii is number 1, Mississippi number 50. Full article here.

Anyone notice any patterns here? It seems it's a lot easier for smaller states to reach the top ten. Feel free to throw in your $.02

looky there it goes from blue states at the top to red states at the bottom. these things are cooked to reward socialist policies. no way is VT #2. lots of fat women, number one or two in drug use, very few manic exercise types, but they have universal state health insurance for kids. BTW HI was number one in percentage of votes for Obama VT was number two.

No surprise that the southern states are the worst. I've never seen more obese people per capita than my brief time living in Oklahoma. It seemed to be the very status quo.

If you were thin/lean/in shape, it was looked at weird.

This is pretty much a list of states by how homogeneously white they are.

That's neither accurate nor does it add to the conversation at all.

On all or nearly all of those, whites score more favorably (not sure about physical activity and immunizations, but I expect the pattern holds). Ergo, whiter states will get ranked more favorably.

If you looked at non-Hispanic whites only, California would probably be top 10.

More like top 5. Washington D.C has the least obese whites by far, followed by Colorado. West Virginian whites are the most obese. Surprisingly Midwestern whites are more obese then Southern whites.
