Amazon - to deliver via drones

Quote:Quote:

Amazon has unveiled its secret research project which it claims will be the future of home delivery - packages delivered by drones.

The Internet shopping giant’s chief executive Jeff Bezos says that he wants to use octocoptors to replace postmen and cut delivery times to just 30 minutes.

Customers would have their order dropped onto their front lawn by the machine which would fly through the air from a nearby warehouse with it clasped in a metal grabber.

Sounds fishy. Imagine the airspace clutter, people camping on rooftops with shotguns trying to bring one down, the complex navigation system (has to be automated).

I'll believe it when I see it.

This copters would never make it out of a poor neighborhood intact. Either that or there will be amazing lawsuits from a curious dog or child getting struck or mangled in the rotors during takeoff or landing.

If they can control it by making it some sort of premium novelty service first though I think that it would be successful. Can you imagine how "keeping up with the jonses" that would make people? The nerd envy of seeing someone else have a robot helicopter land at their house is palpable.

Maybe this will work in suburbia.

But where I live, there is an annoying miss mash of overhead electrical wiring that makes it perilous to try and take off any sort of helicopter.

Sounds like a good way to transport drugs to me.

Haha this will never work. It'll only be a few select areas if it does actually happen.

Great innovation. Well done, Amazon. I always thought the whole anti-drone argument was a bit loony, this is what I imagined: a drone as a tool.

@Parlay44

Indeed. The only vulnerable part for Silkroad was the physical distribution of drugs through FedEx et al. It could be intercepted. Small chance, but still...
- They covered the communication with PGP - safe
- They covered the payments with Bitcoin - safe
- They hosted the black market on TOR - safe

Drugdealers better get tech-savvy, their job's being disrupted [Image: wink.gif]

Not a big fan of drugs myself, but if people want to get high, whatever...

I'm an Engineer so I thought of this idea years ago. You combine a drone, GPS, disposable celluar data connection and a small computer. You can upload destination files via dropbox. You're only limitation is its flight range. And you can boost that with solar panels. You can even do realtime tracking. It's a neat little idea.

This looks cool, but they are too noisy.

Also, how are they going to deliver to an apartment building. You can't just leave shit at the door in an urban neighborhood.

Dude, you aren't thinking. It takes 30 minutes to deliver. You go place your order, get a glass of water and go outside and collect your package.

I think this will be too expensive to ever be practical. waiting 2 to 3 days for a package to arrive is fine with me.

There was a service in NYC called Kosmo that would hand deliver stuff to your door in 45 minutes. You order online and a bike messenger delivers it.

I can imagine a day when a number of these drones fly around in Blade Runner/Fifth Element/Starwars like highways in the sky delivering shit every which way

I can also imagine a 100 of these landing in on place where each of those yellow boxes packed with c4

Also, what if these drones are flying around, mechanics fail and it falls and lands on someone killing them....

Can you imagine the hefty lawsuits from the victim's families?

It amazes me how willing we are to embrace a nightmare future. Do you really want to live in a world with thousands of noisy drones flying everywhere? And then you have the drones recording your every movement and archiving the information in an NSA computer. And all of the gruesome drone accidents. And the criminals can get drones. How would you like being held up at gunpoint by a drone? Or a drone peaking through your windows taking pictures of your wife? This is why God invented shotguns.

@Sherman

That's a valid point.

But I have to disagree. Genuine progress should never be stopped out of fear for the unknown, we should instead find a solution for the new challenges facing us.

In order to make them harder to shoot down, they could fly on a very high & very steep trajectory.

They would have force fields of course. You'd need some kind of directional EMP cannon to kill the electronics and make it crash.
