After years of dealing with mischievous hackers rigging its "Person of the Year" vote, Time has changed up its public polling method for 2013 -- and so far, it appears to be working.
Twitter announced in a blog post yesterday it has partnered with Time to help select a candidate for its annual person of the year issue, which has been running since 1927.
Using the service Poptip, Time will be gathering tweets containing the hashtag #TIMEPOY to help determine who the public wants to win.
Voters have until Dec. 4 at 11:59 p.m. ET to tweet their suggestions, though Twitter notes that Time editors will in fact have the final say.
"While the choice is ultimately made by Time editors, this will give everyone who’s interested an unprecedented chance to air their opinion and cast a vote before the final decision," wrote Twitter's Andrew Fitzgerald. "Using Poptip, Time will gather votes on Twitter, where readers can weigh in on who made the biggest impact in 2013 via tweets."
While Edward Snowden leads the poll results as of Tuesday morning, there is an overwhelming amount of support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and fifth-place candidate Miley Cyrus on the #TIMEPOY hashtag.
