Eye Strain

Eye strain. What a pain in the arse. It gets to around 4 o'clock and suddenly there is a slight discomfort in my eyes. Enough for me to notice. Enough for me to be distracted from my work.

This is more directed at the guys who spend all day in front of a computer. Is there any way to prevent this? Or even fix it. I really don't wish to stop being productive (comfortably), this early in the day. Especially as I'm on to something real good at the moment.

I am about to get off the computer and put some things together before a twenty minute power nap. Maybe that will solve it.

Any thoughts?

Flourescent lights give me that. Not a lot you can do about that than switch out the bulbs to a higher quality one.

Use f.lux on your computer monitor too.

1. get a good monitor. I have an Apple and a Dell u2711. The Dell is terrible for eye strain. I'll replace both when Apple releases their new monitors. They've got some new manufacturing processes in the iMac which cut down on glare and increase the picture quality.

2. try to do some work in a cafe. Every time a nice ass walks in, you'll stop for a second to look at it.

Try artificial tears before you go to bed, when you wake up, and then later in the afternoon. It would also help to get up regularly and focus on something else other than your screen if you can help it.

Lots of my friends swear by the Gunnar computer glasses. They'll make you look nerdy as he'll, so just leave them at your desk.

Having plentiful ambient light will help too.

I discovered f.lux from a coworker and that stuff is really the bomb. It helps me a lot with eye discomfort and makes me properly sleepy when night comes.

I found that a short power nap of twenty minutes did a good job or temporary relief.

I'm going to give f.lux a go. I'll try get past the ugly colour of the screen!

I keep a small bottle of Visine in my drawer. Whenever i feel that burning sensation, pop a drop in each eye and that alleviates the irritation for an hour or two.

Every 30 minutes look away for the computer for a few minutes. You tend to stare at the screen when you look at it. This will help relax the eye.

You might want to see an eye doctor to see if your far sighted (everything is clear far away, but blurry up close). It might be very mild but a slight correction by reading glasses could greatly reduce strain of the eye. You would only wear the glasses while reading small print or computer work. A doctor could help determine this far better than you can on your own. Often the eyes require different prescription per eye so over the counter reading glasses might not work.
