Where to go for New Years Eve?

Where to go for New Years Eve?

Now's probably a good time to start planning for an epic NYE. There's plenty of destinations to choose from, and I'm trying to both a) see a new country/destination and b) bring it in with a bang.

I'm thinking somewhere I can get to with miles (easy) and use points (chain hotels).

I know NYC, LA, Las Vegas, etc, are all great, but I'm trying to get outside the US. Feel free to post about those in this thread though for others.

Some ideas I've thought of so far:
  • Rio de Janeiro (supposedly one of the most epic beach parties)
  • St Lucia (I don't believe many chain hotel options)
  • St Barth (yacht parties, expensive, celebrities)
  • British Virgin Islands (allegedly has yacht hopping parties)
Where are you all planning? What are the pros/cons of your destination?

Based on reviews considering Iceland. You basically get 2 weekends out of it. The nye celebration + weekend. Also it's a place I would never re-visit.

Just trying to make the trip all on points, tough to pull off

Yeah it's a ONS culture according to the reviews so you got 2 or even 3 shots at brigning in the flag great timing with dec 31 being a Tuesday

If I go to my beloved South America I'll be depressed like a emo college student so def not doing that.

That's a big key. A place you would never visit again.

I'm considering two options although not for NYE but rather mid-December towards Christmas.

Valencia, Spain (December 11th-16th) - I'd probably not come back here again being key, but it would be a nice getaway with great food, culture, decent weather and very underrated women where I get to test out my recent intermediate Spanish training that ended last Spring.

This is probably the overall favorite though the timeframe is unfavorable with regards to work deadlines not to mention spending hours doing work emails, sightseeing, and trying to swoop would be meh.

Plus I could always come back here if I wanted a longer trip getting to see Sevilla/Granada for pictures while planting my base in Valencia. Perhaps I will consider December 24th-30th if my sister visiting town from work is cool with that.

St. Petersburg December 17th-23rd - This is looking like the favorite as I wouldn't have much in terms of work emails not to mention I could come home to spend time with family right afterwards.

The two big cons would be the Russian Visa and the freezing cold. Russian visa isn't a problem in itself, but paying for a visa & not being able to go back anytime soon will be a problem as I'm moving to Brazil in May. I know for a fact that if I go to Russia...I'd want to go back under that same visa if I could, haha.

You know the real hang ups logistics. I would buy right now if pulling to the hotel is fine. Problem is we all know apartments are king and there isn't shit that's good in the ideal circle of nightlife....

First world problems.

Note: will likely say fuck it and pull the trigger on some sort of apartment regardless of cost, not to mention it is supposedly better to go there in the winter. I am hovering over the purchase... Hovering

Hey bro. Not sure if those Caribbean options are good for party hopping & swoop opportunities, but it seems like Rio de Janeiro has historically been a very cliquish place where pre-existing social circles are a must at least for NYE (not so much rest of year). Do you plan on going alone or with a group?

I'd avoid NYC for NYE. I personally think that NYE is EXTREMELY overhyped, and it brings the worst types of people to the city. Things are overpriced and it's too much of a shit show for my taste. There are way better times to be in NYC. But I think that most of these holidays aren't the best times to go out unless your sole purpose is to get drunk.

edit: just realized that you said you're not trying to go to NYC

I went to Rio to see in the year 2000 -

3 million people on the beach, everyone dancing, people throwing roses into the sea for good luck, people letting off "home made fireworks" on the beach (Very dangerous!) yachts out at sea letting off fireworks, Hotels covered in white fireworks like champagne bottles exploding, hot air balloons...

One of the most amazing spectacles I've ever seen!

Great idea for NYE....

Still considering my options for NYE, but there is a good party just outside Melbourne on New Year's Day. It is definitely worth checking out this mini electronic festival with an impeccable lineup and brilliant location:

I'm not sure if you read Fisto's Lima thread but Lima sounds like a depressing place.

Yeah, I've read it and a few other topics/datasheets. The main theme is that it sucks because most girls are 7 and below. That's ok with me though, I'll take a 7 if she's easy.

My question is more specifically about New Year's Eve in Lima: is it dead on NYE because everybody's with their families (like they do in Medellin according to reports), or do people in Lima go out to clubs and party?

I have been in Lima on NYE. Its 'ok'. There are couple of places you want to check if you want to get something nice. One is this mall/ entertainment complex with few clubs in it. Good ratio, hot chics. You will find lot of easy tourists here too.

Second (which is a bit low scale) is this huge street with tons of bars in it - Sorry I have totally forgot the venue names.

I did pull one half bulgarian/half peruvian girl. She looked pretty hot, but sucked in bed.

Also I have header cusco is pretty good too on new years. I found the chics in Cusco much better than Lima chics.

Wow man, you're the first person I've ever heard that from. To each his own, of course, but I would have to wholeheartedly disagree. The only hot or even fuckable peruanas I saw in Cusco were from other cities visiting. Most of the locals are very short, indigenous looking girls.

That said, it's a great place to pull traveler chicks. It's a giant hub for people going to or coming from Machu Picchu. Nightlife is ok, but there aren't many options. I loved Cusco, but I think Lima is much better talent-wise. Just my two cents.

Booked my trip to Lima for NYE: will be there from Dec 28 to Jan 5. I'm renting a nice apartment in Miraflores, close to everything. If anybody is going to Lima let me know.

Haven't been out for NYE since I was couple years underage (Dec 2003). Appears as if the tradition will stick this time around as well, haha.

However just confirmed a one week trip to St. Petersburg, Russia for mid-Dec. I was contemplating a split between Istanbul/Kiev more for adventure purposes, but it's off to Mother Russia I go. Visa time...

NYE in Rio is a tad overrated and very overpriced. Go if you want to see the fireworks at Copacabana beach alongside 3 million people. Expect traffic clusterfucks and sky high prices. Unless you already have connections there, who can take you to the right social circles, Rio in NYE (and Carnival for the matter) is not a good idea for the average gringo.

Lima for NYE? Sounds like a bust. I couldn't imagine spending all that money to go to a place like Lima for NYE. Why not somewhere in the states that's going to cost you half the price and be better? Why didn't you do Medellin? Buenos aires? Brazil? If you're going to be in that area. I also hear rio is a little overrated for NYE but there are plenty of places that aren't in brazil. Guarapari for one is awesome. Or Morro de São Paulo. Damn man, Lima? I think Medellin would have been a way better bet. The nightlife is for sure better than Lima and the women win in a landslide victory. The people in general are just way funner in Medellin than Lima.

InternationalPlayboy:

Thanks for the warning. I read the datasheets about Lima and decided to give it a try despite its bad reputation on this forum:
1. I got my ticket for miles. I would have to spend the same number of miles to fly to Medellin, the Caribbean, Cancun, etc this time of year.
2. I've already been to Medellin. Kind of liked it there, got laid (not enough, but still). Now I would like to experience something different.
3. I've been to Brazil too, and it was at the top of the list for me for this trip, but the tickets are fucking expensive, and nothing is available for miles.
4. I understand the women are uglier in Lima, but I've seen some Peruvian girls (never slept with one though). The ones I've seen look ok to me. I don't need a 9 or 10 every night. A couple of 7s and 8s would be ok I guess. Come to think of it, I wouldn't even be pissed off if I didn't get laid at all. I just want to take a break, enjoy nice weather, explore an unfamiliar city, try some new food, see if I want to return there later and go to Machu Pichu.
5. If I decide before end of December that it really does suck ass and I don't want to fly there, I'll lose about $220 for canceling my tickets and apartment reservation and will get back all the miles.

Ok, well that puts stuff a little more into perspective. Still though, so many better options for NYE. I hope it ends up being cool though. Let us know how it goes and what you think of Lima.
