Duffel bag vs backpack?
Leather vs nylon?
What is your preference and why.
PS: I travel somewhat light, and will need to bring a laptop with me.

I don't know how people travel with just a backpack. Definitely duffle bag. When I went to Brazil I brought a huge suitecase and another small one plus a backpack. I definitely did overpack and ended up leaving the huge suitecase at my friends house in Sao Paulo for most of my trip. It was shitty lugging that thing around after I went back to Sao Paulo and picked it up to finish my travels. If you have the money, go with leather.

I tend to overpack so I take a duffle bag as well as a backpack, but if I had to choose, I'd go duffle bag just because you have more space.

It'll of course depend on the length of time of your trip, but I've had the same travel backpack for over 6 years now and it's just the perfect size. It can fit in the carryon compartment of an airplane, but it's also big enough for me to carry enough shit with me to travel through South America for 5 months!
If you're going from place to place a suitcase seems inconvenient.
It depends on how you plan on getting around the place you're going. If you're going to be using Taxis, it won't make much of a difference, but if you're going on public transport a backpack is much more convenient.
Also, go for high quality when it comes to travel equipment. I didn't skimp on my backpack, which is why it's survived this long!
