Man arrested and charged with assault for asking a question in a public forum

http://news.yahoo.com/now-arresting-peop...20815.html

A YouTube video went viral over the weekend showing a parent who got violently arrested for expressing his frustrations about the implementation of the Common Core at a public forum Thursday night in the suburbs of Baltimore.

Somehow, Ellicott City parent Robert Small was then charged with assaulting a police officer in the second degree, reports The Baltimore Sun.

Small stood up out of order during a question-and-answer forum held by the Maryland State Department of Education. He interrupted Dallas Dance, the Baltimore County School Superintendent. Small explained — calmly, though not particularly fluidly — his belief that the Common Core lowers standards of education for children in the district.

The plan for the question-and-answer forum was for attendees write their questions down on pieces of paper. Then, Dance and the Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, Lillian Lowery, would answer them.

After Small spoke for perhaps a few minutes, a security guard confronted him. A police report alleges that Small tried to push the guard away when the guard initially confronted him.

The video does not appear to show Small pushing the guard.

The charge against Small, second-degree assault of a police officer, carries a maximum fine of $2,500 and a prison term of up to 10 years. Another charge, disturbing a school operation, carries a $2,500 fine and six months in prison.

“Look, I am being manhandled and shut down because I asked inconvenient questions,” Small told The Sun on Friday. “Why won’t they allow an open forum where there can be a debate? We are told to sit there and be lectured to about how great Common Core is.”

Showing any resistance to being manhandled by an off-duty police officer is what's passing for assault these days.

I'm not sure he was actually arrested. I ran his name and came up with absolutely nothing. The articles I have read on this matter have been contradictory. They say that this happened in Ellicott City, which is in Howard County, then mention the Baltimore County police having arrested him. Baltimore County would have no jurisdiction in this matter if it happened in Ellicott City.

Stand in front of a jury with this one. No one will convict him once they see the video.

Now a grand jury, however, may see the same video and decide this comfortable little school district needs a good fuck over.

Always volunteer for a grand jury, given the chance.

And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly color. I'm so glad I'm a Beta."

I heard a rumor (I have no idea if there is any truth to it and haven't fully investigated it) that in Howard County during the year 2012, there was a total of one not guilty verdict/acquittal rendered by a jury. There were of course many not guilty verdicts rendered by judges. With the charges he is supposedly facing, he will have the option of either a bench trial or a jury trial. Again, I'm not so sure that he really is being charged.

From what I've read, the man was from Ellicott City but the forum was held in Towson.

I did come across this just now though:

The Baltimore County State's Attorney's office has dropped charges against Robert Small, the Howard County parent who was arrested last week for disupting an education forum in Towson.

"It was clear that Mr. Small violated the rules of the meeting and disrupted the meeting. It was also clear that the officer acted appropriately and did have probable cause to make an arrest on both charges," the state's attorney's office said in a statement. "In the interest of justice, further prosecution will not accomplish anything more. Therefore, the charges have been dismissed."

"Yeah, he definitely assaulted the officer but we're not going to pursue charges...you know, justice and all that."

As much as we always rail against social media whoring, this is the beneficial side of it.

What if that video didn't exist? Think the County Attorney would have dropped the charges? I highly doubt it.

What do you guys think of common core?

I remember reading a article about it which went into at least 6 reasons why it sucked but can't find the article right now.

46 states have already adopted common core. And only Texas and Alaska are completely out of the common core initiative right now.

My opinion, uninformed as it is since I'm not an educator, is simply this: our founders made a system of federalism, robust state powers, and local self-government.

When almost all of the 50 states adopt a similar educational program at once, it defeats the notion of the states as laboratories of democracy. How can you really test and falsify common core if all the states implement it?

More importantly, it makes it impossible for parents to move to a different state if they disagree with this initiative. In fact, many parochial schools are adopting common core. So, parents may be forced to home school their kids if they dissent.

There is an absolute explosion in home schooling, and it is distributed fairly evenly across socioeconomic and political groups. It is not only tea party/anti government people who are resorting to home schooling. Far from it.

That's missing the point, because that wouldnt go to a jury and wherever it goes thats thousands and/or tens of thousands of dollars spent on bonding out, attorneys and court fees in a situation where he should never have gotten arrested in the first place.

Goes to show that you can get arrested for FUCKING ANYTHING. They could arrest you for conspiracy of whatever, and then it's up to YOU to spend thousands and thousands of dollars to prove the government that they're wrong or accept their plea. The US government has turned against their own people. They use arrest to shame us, make us conform like sheep, milk us out of our own money, and to otherwise beat us down and cease free thinking. If you're anywhere outside the box, may god have mercy on you!

One time when I was in college I showed up 2 minutes late to a test and the teacher wouldn't let me in. I lost my temper and told him he was a "fucking prick asshole" Guess what? I was arrested for some fucked up charge like "interfering with the educational process in a classroom" - the same thing as that 'disturbing a school's operation.' I spent the night in jail, wasted $100 in bail, and then had to suck all the deans dicks to get the charge dropped because they were intent on pressing it.

Can you imagine the Americans who founded this country standing for some goon getting in their face like that? Shit would've ended in a duel with somebody dead.

And the guy's right, those people are just sitting there like cattle. The most they can do is feebly protest. If anybody in that crowd had any balls they would take that big thug down, handcuff HIM and get in all those fat adminstrators' faces (did you notice they're all fat?) and demand they be held accountable.

My family left the Soviet Union to come to America for this shit?

Is that because people request bench trials or because the DAs office brings bullshit charges enough that judges are directing verdicts after the state rests?

Common core is one of the great fuckups of all times. Every single thing they claimed, to sell it, is an outright lie. Unbelievable.

"It's a joint effort by educators" -- Lie. It was created by one little special interest group.

"The states voluntarily adopted it". -- Lie. They basically slammed it past the State Governors (bypassed the school systems COMPLETELY) and told nobody involved what it really entailed. Con-job on all sides, funded by Melissa Gates providing a $175 million dollar PR grant.

"The Feds are funding it" -- Lie. The feds are funding about 20% and the school districts -- already near bankruptcy -- are getting fucked for the other 80%.

"it will help kids" -- Lie. Does nothing to improve standards or education. It just makes everybody change to a common standard so it's "easier to measure". Yeah... it will destroy half the school districts in the country in the process, but it will be easier to measure. Kids are already so confused and exhausted by all the chaos at their schools.

This will be the final blow that will kill the already-on-life-support-and near-death american educational system. I have 2 kids in school right now. You have no idea how bad this is, on top of what we already endure. We hate the idea of homeschooling but are now looking at it purely as a form of survival.

People without kids have no fucking idea.
