MSG is fucking you up

I don't know how much you guys know about MSG. But it's in a lot of foods that we eat ...especially fast food.

I had an awesome fish burrito at my favorite lunch joint, Surf Taco ...and it fucked me for the rest of the day. I just felt drained of energy and not motivated at all.

I found this article that explains it pretty well. Thought I'd share.

http://www.3fatchicks.com/4-foods-common...ining-msg/

MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a sodium salt of glutamic acid. As a food additive, it’s used to enhance flavor. It’s found in many seasonings, sauces, salad dressings and prepared foods; it’s also often used in fast food preparation. Side effects associated with MSG consumption include a burning feeling in the chest, arms and face, as well as chest pains, headache, fatigue, heart palpitations and nausea. The FDA does not require manufacturers who use MSG in their products to list it as an ingredient. Here’s a list of foods that often contain MSG; please keep in mind that not all products from these companies contain MSG, so check with the manufacturers to be sure.
1) Prepared and Packaged Foods
Many prepared foods contain MSG, especially snack foods like chips, frozen meals, canned soups and instant soups. Some of the most popular packaged foods contain MSG. Some of them are:
Hamburger Helper
Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix
Progresso soups
Campbell’s soups
Most frozen pizzas, processed vegetables, processed and canned meats and frozen pot pies contain MSG as a flavor enhancer.
2) Sauces and Seasonings
Many sauces, seasonings and salad dressings contain MSG. Soy sauce, fish sauce, gravy and dipping sauces often contain MSG. Here are some of the salts, seasonings, sauces and dressings that contain MSG:
Accent seasoning
Bacon Bits
Goya Sazon
Lawry’s Season Salt
Gravy Master
Bragg’s Liquid Aminos
Marmite
Sweeteners, like brown sugar and Nutrasweet, often contain MSG, as do many salad dressings. Some processed cheeses, like processed parmesan cheese, contain MSG. Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and many other condiments contain this food additive as well.
3) Fast Foods and Chain Restaurant Foods
Fast foods are very high in MSG, especially Chinese food. While most Chinese and other Asian fast food restaurants use MSG as a flavor enhancer, many now offer MSG-free alternatives or will be willing to prepare them if asked.
Some fast food restaurants who regularly use MSG include:
McDonald’s
KFC
Burger King
Chick-Fil-A
Taco Bell
Popular chain restaurants, like Applebee’s, are also known to use MSG in many of their products. Often, that’s not because the restaurants intentionally put MSG into the food, but because it’s present in the sweeteners, spices and sauces they use, or because it’s present in packaged and processed foods used by that restaurant. If you’d like to avoid MSG at your favorite restaurants, check that restaurant’s food allergy guide online, and avoid using spices, sauces or sweeteners at that restaurant. Many restaurants will provide MSG free sweeteners, spices and sauces if you ask.
4) Snacks
Many snacks, like chips, contain MSG as a flavor enhancer. The dips and sauces that many people like to eat in conjunction with chips, pretzels and other snacks also often contain MSG. While some snack foods, like plain potato chips and Cheez-Its crackers, are MSG free, many others contain MSG, sometimes in levels high enough to cause an allergic reaction in those sensitive to glutamic acid. Popular snack foods that contain MSG include:
Pringles chips (the seasoned varieties)
Doritos
Planters nuts
Unilever and Knorr instant dip products
Most flavored potato chips and processed cheese flavored snacks also contain monosodium glutamate, so you should try to avoid them.

Is it listed as monosodium glutamate under the ingredients? So I can check my salad dressings and such to make to make sure theres no MSG in them.

I dont eat much of that other stuff anyway, or at least I try not to

I know Chinese food has it because its so fucking good. I loves me some General Tso's chicken and pork fried rice. I can see all the Chinese food buffets popping up everywhere contributing to the obesity epidemic.

MSG is basically a type of salt. They call it a flavor enhancer. If something tastes unbelievably good to you it probably has MSG in it.

Man the food industry is slowly turning into big pharma.

My 2013 resolution was to massively decrease my consumption of food outside of my own home. The health benefits have been huge (lifting more, better skin, more energy).

Avoiding poorly processed foods these days requires more work than it should, but it's worth it.

in Irl & the UK, it's often listed as 'E621' or just as 'Flavouring'
nitrites/nirates are another one that you need to watch out for
they're in a lot of preserved meats like salami/chorizo/parma ham and in most supermarket sausages
usually have to go to a health store to get the nitrite/nitrate free meats

A couple of the spots near me have 'No MSG' written on the front of their menus. Not sure how true that is. Chinese food is one of my only terrible food weaknesses. Check out the ingredients on the Asian style sauces when you're in the (regular) grocery store...shit is pure sugar and salt.

Check out the Asian ramen noodles. They come in a bowl with a spice packet. 300% of the USRDA of sodium!! [Image: lol.gif]

It is a minefield out there of crap that you can find in food. It takes a fair bit of time doing research and label reading to realise how much crap is out there.

If you ever get a chance to buy pure MSG from an asian store, do it, and then taste the pure MSG - the stuff tastes incredibly horrible by itself, like it kill rats!

I heard somewhere that Panda Express' signs saying "No MSG Added" are actually false - that they do not actually add MSG at the restaurant, but the food that they order from the factory already has MSG in it. So, although they dont "add" msg, they dont have to because there is already msg in it.

Well whey protein probably isn't near as bad as eating fast food. You probably mix the protein with milk.

Lots of fast food is barely even food any more.

I don't feel bad after drinking a protein shake but I do feel bad after I eat a fast food meal.

The only way to avoid additives for sure is to make your own food.

No, whey protein has glutamic acid, which is a naturally occuring non essential amino acid found in many many proteins. It is the PRECURSOR to man-made MSG, but has nothing to do with MSG in itself other than providing the naturally-occurring building block for it.

You get all this false information when fear-mongering trash articles start getting written by ninkinpoops who don't bother to do anything more than a perfunctory google search to come up with unhealthy foods.

MSG brings out that 'savory taste'. it is different from basic 4 tastes.

My mom never used MSG. she always used dried anchovy to make a broth.

I mean there is a way to make natural msg but you can't expect that from $7.99 chinese restaurant.
Plus a lot of people are used to msg flavors. What if the chef cares about the health of customers and just get rid of msg? I bet a lot of people will complain about its mild tastes and never come back.

Yep.
