It's a cool gadget, no doubt.

Call me old fashioned, but there's an art to opening wine correctly. And there's nothing smoother in front of a girl than being able to open a bottle of wine with a corkscrew, effortlessly.

I'm a big fan of these, personally:

Deer horn pocket knife and corkscrew, from Laguiole ($230)

That is fucking cool. Especially if you're not a heavy drinker and are not ready to finish a bottle each time it's opened. It's $299, which is a little pricey IMHO. I'd buy it at $99.

Yeah. The benefit of the gadget though is that no oxygen enters the bottle so the wine is preserved and always fresh. When you pop open a cork oxygen immediately enters the bottle which begins the decaying process for the wine.

Oh sure, I get the benefit of it. The pressurized cylinders are filled with argon, so it gets back filled with inert gas which should not affect the wine in any way. I mean it's not like $299 is unaffordable, it's not really that much money to drop, but I guess you'd have to be more in to wine (or have more girls over more frequently) for it to make sense. I don't ever drink at home by myself, for example.

Yeah. I was replying to thedude's post. But yeah, cool gadget, not worth the price if you're not heavy into wine and drinking often at home.

Probably pays for itself after a few weeks if you're a regular solo wine drinker.

If you have girls over though you should be using a decanter and killing the whole bottle.

Yuppie device. A better DIY solution would be to buy a small used argon bottle off craigslist, get it filled at a welding shop for $20, get 3' of hose from a brew shop, and that setup will last the rest of your life.

I read a Wired.com review about this a while back.

Coravin 1000 Review

For a restaurant with high turnover, or just some brand snob with too much money, this might be a good buy. But for the wine lover with a modest budget a can of food-grade argon gas will do just fine.

Private Preserve Review

I use a particular brand from WineSave and it's great to have around when you just can't have another glass of Shiraz.

Also, take into account that more winemakers are opting for screwcaps, which reduce the chance of cork taint and spoilage to almost zero.

If you're really short on change, just clean out a couple of small-sized glass jars and fill it up with the remaining wine from the bottle, as full as you can to keep out the air. It'll keep at least another 24 hours when you can finish it off

Stop being a soft-cock and knock of the whole bottle in a sitting!
