I live in the UK. Awhile ago I read the following excellent book about the decline of the British economy:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Going-South-Brit...0230392547

My favourite writer is Peter Hitchens. And he thinks Britain is finished. Here is his take on the above book:

http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/2...orld-.html

We have a Shale Gas revolution around the corner (Britain has more of it than most countries). And Europe is a disaster zone which will soon erupt on a massive scale.

So - by not being in the Euro - things could be worse for Britain.

As for the future. Who knows? If you look at the past 50 years - it has being when people have being most pessimistic about the future - that things have turned out well (look at the books published in the seventies). This is because Economics is a fucked up subject and is wrong much more often than it is right. So - I am always optimistic that something will turn up.

Also - I don't give a fuck either way. I am never having kids - so if it were up to me, I would sell the country to China and lease it back for the next 70 years. Then - the Chinese can do what they want with us. And I won't be around to care - and neither will any of my kids.

It is funny how things turn out. Remember twenty year ago when Japan was going to take over the world? Well they are on the edge of going bankrupt now.

The video is a long infomercial for Money Week, but everything it says is true. The UK is in debt up to its ears and the only reason there isn't a crisis is because its borrowing rate is so low.

The funny thing is that documentary could have been about the USA too.

In 10-20 years China will be on the verge of bankruptcy too. Too many old people, not enough consumer class, giant sausagefest, bad birthrates, social tensions, etc.

We have a system that can't support itself globally, it's just tossing around the problems. There's too much wealth in the wrong things. We don't make enough real hard goods, as a planet. Too much financial services. too much entitlement. Too much reliance on growth. Nothing can grow forever. Your system has to be functional 100% with breaking even. Wealth does not grow. It is transferred and shuffled around.

This is probably relevant for Western civilization in its entirety.

The UK lives in an economic bubble, one propped up mainly by London.

London relies mainly on its financial services and a huge amount of tax receipts come from the UK financial industry.

This is why if the Europeans have their way and introduce the FTT (Financial Transaction Tax) or other detrimental anti-competition measures, which they keep trying to do, then the UK is truly fucked.

The country has a huge reliance on the welfare state and public sector jobs, which means a large sector of the population is perpetually reliant on the government. This is part of the reason why the same self-serving politicians who have no desire to put the country's interests first get elected - with their public sector carrot and stick promises.

With a bloated public sector and increasing levels of debt to service the welfare bill, whilst encouraging companies to take their business abroad by penalising them (banks, corporation tax, etc); disenfranchising its own citizens by flooding the country with immigrants thereby encouraging the best and brightest to leave; raising taxes on the individual to stratospheric levels to redistribute the wealth and not investing it in the form of improved public services - it's easy to see the UK in its current state is a disaster waiting to happen.

No country can afford socialism. Give any country 100% of the world's wealth and then a socialist govt. and it will be bankrupt within a few generations.

Even the once unstoppable world power USSR, with TONS of resources and many of the best NAZI scientists captured after the war working for them, only lasted 4 decades post WWII. Despite this being one of the safest times in world history.

I wonder how long it will be until other countries get to feel the Greece style austerity. When it comes to the USA, a lot of Americans are going to find out how easy and good they once had it.

China CAN'T be on the verge of bankruptcy .Why? because its the most hard worker country of the world.

The one child policty? Although it has avoided nearly 300 millions of births since 1979 and has demostrated to the world the lack of moral of this communist régimen:
