I live on the water and saw "kayak rentals" a few weeks back and decided to try it. I spent 3 hours out on the water and I was hooked.
I just went to REI and bought a new 12ft recreational kayak and have taken it out the past two days and it is super fun and I can already feel the soreness in my upper body.
I feel like this is a great way to get a good upper body work out without the monotony of the gym.
I looked at the sea kayaks at first but was looking at $1500 for a good one so I decided to just go with a nice recreational kayak which I spent 700 for.
Any of you guys kayak or have advice for a new guy?

What do you guys think about kayaking for a first okcupid/POF date?
I live right on the water so I could have them park at my place so at least the logistics would be good. I have a storage hole in my kayak that I could put some girly beers or some hard alcohol to bring with us.
A kayak rental place is right next to my building but they close around 6pm so that kind of fucks up everything if we are out late.
Maybe I should just buy a 2nd cheap kayak so we wouldn't have to rent one?
I could probably pick up something used for around 300 to 400 not sure if it is worth the investment but I could also let friends borrow it who come visit.

You talking using a two person kayak as a date or two seperate kayaks?
A canoe I think would work better. Plenty of room to store stuff and you can teach her to work as a team paddling, get her used to taking your commands.
You can even tip it over and add some drama to the date, chicks love drama.
and you can grab canoes cheap on craigslist

kayaks/ canoes are cheap on craiglist like someone else said.
I had a fishing kayak that I would take out on the beach to fish off of. This also lead to dates with girls who would want to kayak and I would bring it (if you have a car for it great, I had my fathers pickup)
Its something fun and a good workout. you can also buy pedals that can ease the burden of paddling if you get tired. Try fishing on it, nothing beats getting dragged around by an 80 lb tarpon here lol

Just had a great weekend kayaking in upstate NY.
It really is a perfect way to get out into nature.
I took my favorite girl with me and she loved it.
It was her first time ever in a kayak and she picked it up right away. We were on a river with class II rapids.
Something like this:
Pretty easy, but still fun. Girl was very excited and the ride got her very very horny. Better than usual sex afterwards…thank you mother nature.
A lot of the ride was just floating down the river in silence, watching dozens of birds fly around, seeing fish jumping out of the water, and smelling the sweet sweet scents of spring. Goddamn it was a good time.
This is a great hobby if you can get into it.
Anyone know any good spots that are within driving distance of NYC?
I started on the 10 mile river in Dutchess County…the 10 mile connects with the Housatonic in CT. Launched in the town of Dover Plains, NY, landed in Kent, Connecticut. About a 3.5 hour ride.

Kayaking is a good time and quite a workout as well. It's also niice that kayaks are fairly cheap and relatively easy to carry around on the roof of a car so no need for trailers or anything like that.
If anyone else is looking for a Kayak Farm and Fleet normally has some pretty decent kayaks on sale for like $150-$190, if you drop a few extra bucks you can get a little better one. Dicks in the sunday circulars will often have prett decent kayaks for under $300 that are more name brands.
I think Kayaking could definatley be a fun date...with the right girl. Kayaking is a workout and if you got some prissy girl who doesn't like to do anything sweaty outdoors you could have a bitch and moan fest on your hands. Also, some girls may not like geting all sweaty on a first date. If you got a good feeling what type of girl this is and she would be down for it I think its an awesome idea

Craigslist is definitely the way to go when getting a kayak.
I got a pair of brand new river kayaks for $300. Equipment and everything. Keep them stored at a friends upstate.
Kayaks are the sort of things rich people buy and then never use. They want to get rid of them fast because they don't want a $1000 reminder of how lazy they are hanging up in their garage.

Just went Kayaking up on the Lake today. Its the first time I tried it, I usually always float down rivers. Being on the lake was dope, everything was open and beautiful. Plus its more of a work out cause your paddling to get where you want more then being on a river.

I'm about to get a SUP to compliment my kayaking. You definitely get a different perspective standing up instead of sitting down out on the water.
Costco has a good deal for $899 for a SUP with a all the accessories.

Yes! The SUP is an awesome way to explore, great fun...and a great workout. My cousins out in Long Island all do this on the regular and I love to join. Another chick magnet.

Why not get a 2-seat kayak??

I love whitewater kayaking.
Open water or sea kayaking is like watching the grass grow, although if you like to fish i suppose it serves its purpose.

Sea kayaking can be lots of fun if you stay in the surf zone and the waves are small (say, half a meter high) and you do
kayak surfing. That has been some of the most fun I have had in my adult life, and chicks who joined me loved it, too. Be careful, however, because using a sit-on-top sea kayak like the following one
for kayak surfing when the waves are at least 1 meter high is kind of suicidal. You don't want the kayak to be thrusted against your skull when the wave eventually breaks.
For some extreme tow-in big wave kayaking, take a look at this:

I have been kayaking, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, fishing & beach bumming etc all of my life.
I personally do not really like the "sit on top" ocean kayaks, although in warm water where you may have to get out past mild surf, they do serve the purpose well. and Hobie makes some damn cool ones with their pedal drive that would warrant a look if you're into fishing (hands are free) or if you're a gear head type person.
Likewise, whitewater/surf (tiny sit inside wedge type front) kayaks are a blast, but a fairly specific use.
the material of choice for a durable kayak is probably plastic. easy to drag on a rocky beach without having to worry about damaging it, and relatively inexpensive.
as was mentioned I would also suggest buying used.
so some guys are asking about whether to consider a double / "tandem" kayak to be able to bring a girl. YES. you can find open cockpit double kayaks that are a bit like a hybrid between a kayak and a canoe. sit inside type, padled with kayak paddles. this type of kayak might be usd 400-700 used and 800-1000 new. possibly less. not *that* common but they are out there if you look.
for using it with just one person, you can adjust the rear seat location and it will work fine.
another option is a tandem inflatable kayak. I wouldn't go low end but even in the $500-$1500 (new) range, they can be quite decent, and pack into a duffle bag to keep in your apartment or the trunk of your car. innova and even advance elements (brands) make some pretty good inflatable options.
both the inflatable and the open cockpit tandem have some disadvantages compared to a true "sea kayak" or even conventional sit inside single kayaks. a sea kayak is going to be faster and track (go straight) better. although rudders can be added to all types. the inflatable will tend to get blown around if there is any wind.
but both the inflatable and the open cockpit tandem can be suitable for protected saltwater (or ocean if you know what you're doing on a calm day) and mild whitewater floating down rivers. up to class 2 or 3. if you're looking for a versatile boat, these would be worth a consideration.
a true sea kayak is going to be longer, skinnier, and have smaller cockpit (cockpits in the case of a 2 person) that you squeeze your legs into, and you use a spray skirt to seal between your body and the kayak. you will usually have a rudder, flotation, and extra compartments to stow gear. if you're planning multiple day trips in saltwater (still protected or semi protected waters, or calm days) a sea kayak is the boat of choice.
all that said, if you're really JUST trying to get the panties wet, a traditional style wood rowing boat, or a rowing dory... simply can't be beat. if you built it yourself all the better. fiberglass and epoxy over wood is the construction method of choice here. you face the girl and she gets to sit there as a passenger and see you sweat and work hard rowing her around. the right type of boat can be seaworthy in most conditions, although probably not suitable for shallow rivers. rowing is one of my favorite forms of exercise. I love kayaking too, and a great workout. just like girls, sometimes it's hard to have just one boat
