I have to preface this with I am not advocating any law breaking or sleeping with minors. I am simply curious.

I am 19 and was curious if anyone could enlighten me on some things


I understand that the law is made to protect against sex offenders but

1. How could it be overlooked that many high school age kids would potentially be labeled as sex offenders if the state does not have to closeness in age law.
-for example if a 18 yo and 17 sleep together, the 18 would be at fault. in this case, there was nothing predatory

2. What is the origin or reasoning in general? Does it have to do with feminism? Or the economy?
-my first theory is that if women are pregnant at 13, they won't work and that keeps wages higher of there are less workers.
-second theory is that there would be too much competition from older women

ONCE AGAIN: please do not ban me for this. I am not suggesting that anyone break any laws. I am wondering if anyone could shed light on the origins/reasoning whether it be theories they have or whatever. obey the laws of your jurisdiction.

I meant when was the turn where certain ages became off limits. Hundreds of years ago men married 13 year olds. I was asking to what specifically made that a taboo?

What state are you in? The federal age of consent is 16. State can vary from 16-18...

The age of consent, I believe, was actually started in Victorian times and was intended to protect male children from older female peers.

I'm fuzzy on the history in between that and now, but eventually it got turned around is mostly a weapon used against man who would sleep with younger woman. A way to divide is in an increasingly less United, States of America.

People cry outrage when an older male sleeps with a young woman, yet say that "he probably wanted it" if it's a boy sleeping with an older woman. People believe in "gender equality" but don't actually apply it.

The age of consent is simply a taboo. We dignify laws in modern society by assuming that they are rooted in finely honed rational arguments when this is often not the case.

I was just reading the anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon's "The Fierce People" about the Yanomamö of Venezuela and northern Brazil. The Yanomamö have taboos about which women a man can have sex with. They're prohibited from having sex with pregnant women and women who are still nursing. But since women in their society nurse their children for perhaps 3 years this means that husbands are much of the time unable to have sex with their own wives!*

The result is that men have sex with other women, including other men's wives. And this in turn causes much of their tribal warfare, which centers around feuds over women and extra-marital affairs.

*Not so different than the West today.

The origin is the same as any set of laws that fly in the face of the natural order: the compulsion for power. You don't see animals in the wild checking for consent. The only issue is attraction and biological maturity. Women can give birth at 13. As for "predators" - there are some men like that, who without any laws would be dealt with harshly by the people in the community.

The truth is the vast majority of people punished by these laws are young men who either a) don't know the girl is underrage, b) have a sexual encounter with a girl who then "regrets" it or any number of other scenarios that I saw played out with dire consequences for many of the guys I knew in high school.

BUMP: I brought this up because I know a girl who is 17 who told me she uses fake if to get into clubs. I said it was messed up.

In a case like this where a girl used a fake id, does anyone know if the man could still be at fault
