Detroit and Royal Oak Data Sheet

This data sheet encompasses some parts of Metro Detroit and the Downtown Detroit area where the major casinos and sports venues are.

Metro Detroit:

I’m only familiar with the cities near Royal Oak, Troy, Birmingham, Ferndale and Rochester. I am only going to speak on Royal Oak.

Transportation:
This state is the headquarters for the big 3 auto companies (Chrysler, GM and Ford) so you best believe public transportation is awful. Your two options for getting to/around Royal Oak and Downtown Detroit are by taxi or renting a car. Taxi service will be about 65 per person for one way from the airport but if you want to rent a car it should cost you no more than 30 a day. Taxi from say Troy to Royal Oak should cost around 20

Lodging
If you’re going to go party in Royal Oak, you will most likely be staying in Troy. There are a plethora of hotels here that cater to business travelers. There is the Marriot, Wyndgate, and Somerset Inn to name a few. Prices range between 110 to 160 per night. Nothing fabulous but at least it is close to the most prestigious mall in Michigan and its only ten minutes from Royal Oak.

I don't know about airbnb or renting apts, houses, etc but I am sure there is something available.

Nightlife
Troy doesn’t have any nightlife besides a few bars and restaurants. If you like to run game at some upscale restaurants then you can visit Capitol Grille, Kruse and Maur, Champs, Benihanas, and other places.

To get to Royal Oak you can take 1-75 and get off at the 11 mile exit and head west for a few miles or you can take Woodward from wherever you are until you get there. Downtown Royal Oak is basically a ½ mile strip of bars and restaurants.

All bars close up by 2am. Cops are real strict here also.

The only “club” there is called Luna. It’s isolated from the other bars so you will have to take a cab to get there. There is a $5 cover charge but the drinks are real cheap. I’m talking no more than $4 for a beer/mixed drink/shot. The place is like a shitty college bar but the girls are super easy. It seems to be a popular stop for bachelorette parties. Best place to go if you need a slump buster or automatic swoop.

Woodys: A three story building with a bar on the main floor, second floor being half bar area and half dance floor and then the rooftop area being a bar. This is where the 21-23 year olds mostly come. IMO it’s the bar that is mostly a sausage fest. Drink prices are a bit more expensive but still very cheap.

Bastone/Commune: Bar/Restaurant by day but at night the basement turns into a bar area/dance area. Your average 20 something girl/guy is the type you will find here. There is a 1:1 guy to girl ratio.

5th avenue: A large bar area on the main floor and a bar area/dance area at the top floor. Drinks are more on the expensive side (in terms of Royal Oak) then the other bars. There is always a super long line to get in but if you wait in front with some girls and you look decent they will let you right in. There always seems to be a ton of dudes here. $5 cover.

Mr. B’s: I thought this place was just a sports bar but come to find out they turn into a large dance bar on the weekends. For some reason, this bar attracts African American clientele more than anything. So if you like the sistas then this is the place to go.

Goodnight Gracies: This is an upscale lounge/bar type of place. Of all bars in Royal Oak, I think they play the best music. This bar also attracts the Arabic population if you want that flag. It’s also probably the only bar in this city that attracts patrons that dress nice. Drink prices here are the most expensive in the city.

Sky Club: A good place that no one knows about. They cater towards Latin dance and music. Wed –Thursday is Latin night. So if you know how to Salsa you will absolutely kill here. On the weekend it turns into top 40 hits.

Again, all these places are within 3 blocks of each other. If you lived in the apts here or the surrounding houses you will absolutely kill it. I use to live 3 blocks away so a friend and myself would invite girls over beforehand to pre drink and then use our perfect logistics to seal the deal.

Ferndale borders Royal Oak and also has a nice area for bars. You tend to see more liberal/hippie types here. There is also Birmingham but there isn’t much of a bar scene here other than a few random places.

Daytime Activities
Somerset Mall-As I mentioned before this is the best mall in Michigan. It has all your high end brands along with several upscale restaurants and a food court. This would be your first place for day gaming. There are plenty of Arabic and Asian women if you want along with everything else. Younger girls (18-21) can be picked up too. If you enjoy MILFS, then come here during the weekday.

Detroit Zoo: Technically it’s in Royal Oak but whatever. Every time I have gone I have seen nothing but families. Its good spot to take a girl but I don’t find it to be the best when it comes to swooping. I do hear that they host singles night once a month. It’s from 6-10pm and they serve alcohol. That’s the extent of my knowledge.
There are also plenty of golf courses in the area if you enjoy that.

During the weekends there are plenty of females walking around Downtown Royal Oak for shopping, eating, or just whatever. They often have wine and beer strolls during the summer. They even have a few festivals at the Farmer’s market.

Girls:
People tend to find Royal Oak as a major nightlife area but the range of girls is mostly limited to white. I don’t see any value of being black or Asian as Michigan isn’t the most progressive state when it comes to interracial relationships. If you have any sort of game you will do well.
There are some beautiful Arabic women in the state but they tend to go out in large groups and go in certain areas.

Next up is the area where the Casinos and Professional sporting venues are located.

There are 3 large casinos in Detroit. They are MGM, Greektown and Motor City. All of which can be reached by cab or walking and are accessible by walking from Ford field and cab from Comerica Park and Joe Louis Arena. General walking at night (maybe even during the day at some parts) is NOT advisable though.

Best Hotel?

Greektown and MGM are both very affordable. In the summer you can get a room for as low as 99 a night. If you want luxury you should stick to the AAA Four Diamond hotels like MotorCity Casino Hotel. As far as food options, MotorCity has the higher end of restaurants between the three. .

Gambling

This isn’t Vegas as cocktail service is not the best, there are hardly any poker rooms, and the amount of slots is decent at best.
MGM is the best casino IMO. WHY? It’s because you can use your MGM club card here as its part of the brand. It also brings in the best entertainment when it comes to the big three.
Greektown is def in the safest area of Downtown Detroit and is very accessible to the bars and nice restaurants.
Best Casino in the general area is Casino Windsor but you will have to head across the border for that.

Last call is at 1:30am

Bars/Clubs

Detroit Beer Company
Nice but small bar with locals in their 30s up and up come to chill. I’d recommend this place as a first stop for some beers on a date. Anytime I go in I only see groups of mixed sets or couples. This bar does have a few other good things going for it like good food, not too rowdy and several TVS.

Coaches Corner
With plenty of TVs and an atmosphere that supports drunk and fun sports fans, I find that the girls here are def there to be opened. This is a place where you will find manyTiger fans. Girls here come in mixed sets and all girl sets. They’ve also got some decent sandwiches if you’re hungry and good lunch specials

Old Shillelagh
I’ve been here a few times before a game and once during St Patty’s day. It’s an Irish bar that with three floors. The bottom floor usually has a dj, the middle floor usually has a band playing indie or rock and the top floor is just for chilling. Other than living off its name..it’s a dump.

Elysium Lounge
I’ve never been here but I always here Detroit’s Hip-Hop stations sponsoring several nights a week at this club. Therefore I believe it caters to the hip hop crowd. This place does offer VIP Tables and bottle service.

LeLand City Club
A bar for the Goth/electronic scene if that’s your thing. Don’t know much about it other than it says open past 3am on most nights

Delux
A nice bar that has a pretty large size dance floor sectioned off and a DJ that plays top 40 hits. The Dance floor is sectioned off so there is other areas to drink beer and mingle with those who don’t want to dance or are waiting for someone to ask them. This place is perfect for finding a girl, bouncing her to the dance floor, taking her to the bar for some drinks and then back to wherever you want to go. Best place to meet the most easy going and sexy girls in this area.

Strip Clubs

Coliseum
I’ve been in once and during that time I was drunk. How drunk? Drunk enough to be sitting in the sky room and puke on the floor. I then proceeded to cover it up with a chair and continue the night on as if nothing happens. No one said a word about it so that might tell you something about the club. Anyways…from what I remember, you pay a cover charge of $5 plus $60 for a sky room which is basically a room above the main dance floor. It’s not VIP but more of an area where several guys can get a lap dance. Dances were $20 per song and that’s all I remember. Girls were average at best and there was only one main stage so I wouldn’t recommend it

Bouzouki
This is a larger strip club with several stages. This was the first club I’ve been to. There was a $15 cover charge but I had my Detroit Tigers stub so I was let in for free. I didn’t do anything else but watch and order a $7 warm beer.

Here is a link to another option if you want to get out of the Metro Detroit area in the summer. We are one of the best states for boating!

If you are into the 19-24 crowd then I would stick to Royal Oak otherwise Detroit would be a good option.

Feel free to ask me anything specific. There are a few members who live in and around metro Detroit here.

Hate to post this without really adding anything (other than a good story), but I will anyways. I was at a Tiger game two years ago and went out drinking at the Shillelagh until I was a complete blackout mess. Tripped on the step going out front to smoke and skinned my knee up real bad, with a pretty decent amount of blood. When I went back in I used some bar napkins to wipe the blood off but for some reason, it just kept flowing.
Went to Bouzouki to finish off the night and I had to keep wiping blood off my knee. Got a lapdance in there from some broad, when she's done with it she mentions she's next on stage. She goes up and when she hits the blacklights, clear as day you can see the streaks of blood from my knee all over this chick's body. It was practically glowing as if it were body paint. She never noticed and we left before she was done on stage.
I love Detroit.

I live downtown Royal Oak and I totally agree with everything OP wrote. I am surprised you did not mention Blackfinn, which is an upscale college bar with a dance floor. Right next door is Tequila Blue, with dueling pianos on the first floor (older crowd) and a decent dance floor upstairs (younger crowd). Most of that building is Barnes and Noble, where I spend most of my free time. The big table by the window upstairs is perfect for day game because people will naturally want to share it with you. Same logistics work for Caribou caffe across the street. The tables by the window are close to each other so it's easy to start a conversation with a neighbor. If you can afford it, shop at Holiday Market and signup for LA Fitness, they are across the street from each other. That's where good-looking, rich people buy their soy and run on treadmills.

The Salvation Army next to Caribou has some excellent clothes for cheap. The public library is also a cool place to hang out, read books, and rent movies for $1/week. There is the Cacao Tree Cafe where they will juice carrots, beats, and wheat grass while giving you the stink eye for wearing a leather jacket. Speaking of leather - visit the sex store next time you're on a date. For a more romantic date, there is a pottery place, where you can paint your own bowl or a cup (mine says "Keep Calm and Acquire Aesthetics"). There are two tea places, you want the Bean and Leaf. It does not have booths like the other one, but their chairs are way more comfortable (try Matcha Izu). For after-bar food, you want Leo's Coney Island. This place is swarming at 2AM with drunk people ordering flaming cheese. The food is kind of pricey, but their bacon is way better than the Coney Island across from Luna.

Now the hidden gems. Gemmayze - upscale bar/restaurant downstairs, hidden lounge upstairs. Remember that model casting call I posted about earlier, it happened in that lounge. There is a tiny bar next to Bastone that everyone always walks by, perfect place to get a martini before a date. Ronin - upscale sushi restaurant, packed with gorgeous women that often wait for their tables in a hidden lounge/bar upstairs. The lounge is only open on Fridays/Saturdays and most of the time people rent it out, but if you get the timing right - there is nothing better. And of course Monjinlau in Troy on Wednesdays - upscale sushi restaurant/bar/lounge full of models and suits. Even with a reservation you will still wait in line and spend a fortune, but is so worth it - the best talent I have seen yet.

I do not recommend Andiamo - looks fancy on the outside, old rich people with trophy wives on the inside. The Red Fox looks like it has the perfect logistics (the view + fire pits on the patio), but it's all tables that are not well suited for mingling. However, Cantina Diablo downstairs is not bad on Fridays for salsa dancing.

Hey one-two, Ill be moving to RO in the fall. How much are you paying for your spot over there and how did you find it?

Unless you are renting a room in a house in one of te neighborhoods near Downtown RO it's not going to be cheap. I paid 550 (cable included) to share a house. Otherwise your looking at 800+ for urban apts. Matt Stafford stays in those high risers on Washington st from what I hear or use too. So you can imagine the cost there.

There are some places on 12 mile near main and Rochester. Other than that a good spot in RO means either buying/renting a house or paying 1100+ a month for a cream of the crop spot.

I am paying 900 at Avenue Eleven Apartments, directly across the street from the Royal Oak Farmer's Market. It does not look like much from the outside, but the insides are brand new and the location couldn't be better. Give them a call, 248-677-7017 (Jean), cause I'm pretty sure they sell out fast.

Yeah I figured as much which is why I didn't resign myself to living downtown specifically. My budget is 1000 max, so I probably won't end up down there immediately since the value won't be that great most likely.

Actually... I would say your value goes up. Some girls won't care but there are plenty of birds that love Royal Oak. I've met a few that would come over to pre party just because I lived within a few blocks of downtown. Also, telling a girl that we can walk 3 blocks to my place for food and a after party scores is a lot better than you driving or taking a taxi. I'm sure you know this but it really does help to live closer.

And honestly with your price range..isn't a huge drop in apt per month price at 13 and rochester, 14 and woodward, etc etc vs downtown. Maybe 200 per month? If you go out at least once a week I would say you break even with cost of taxis.

But yeh..there are some nice spots between 11 main and 13 and main.

Yeah I get what you're saying and I agree. I was talking about the amenities of the actual apartments. From what ive seen you get more for your money if you're not downtown, but obviously location is the factor that makes downtown so expensive on the first place. But those logistics probably outweigh the downside of not having an in unit washer/ dryer or free heating though.

Tried to hit the fair going on in Ferndale last night, but it was essentially over by the time we got there, so we ended up hitting the town instead. Ferndale is sandwiched between Detroit and Royal Oak. Here a rundown of some spots in Ferndale, that I went to last night and have been to in the past. :

John D- Go on Fridays.Talent is probably the best I've seen in the area, as theres some real stunners in here. Even ratio. The crowd is mostly ethnic, with it being mostly Arab chicks with a few black and a smattering of white girls. 21-40 crowd, airing on the side of being more mature. This is a little bit more of an upscale spot judging by how most of the people were dressed, so if you're a fan of suit game this is probably a good place for it. Considering how high the talent level is, girls were relatively receptive and open to being approached. Only thing I don't like about this venue is that its very small, but it doubles as a bistro earlier in the day. The DJ is pretty good playing mostly hip-hop, reggaeton, and other pop hits with a mix of techno as well.

Orchid-A dance club in the same vein as Luna, in that the crowd isn't very pretentious. Dress code is very lax and I saw guys in the club with durags and sweatpants on, however its not overrun with thuggish looking dudes. The crowd here is most pretty varied although the chicks are mostly white, with some black girls sprinkled in. The talent isn't that high, so you may want to reserve this spot for later in the night, if you're not doing well. A bonus is that they serve pizza at the end of the night. Mid to late 20's crowd.

Rosie O'Gradys- A Irish pub/sports bar that also acts as a nightclub with a dance floor. There's decent talent here, but some people feel like its kinda douchey similar to Black Finn, but not as upscale-ish. I don't agree with that, but its also a good place to watch a game. Radio pop hits and hip hop are played here for the most part.Drinks are fairly weak. Mostly white and black girls. 21-35 crowd. Good patio that you can bounce chicks to, if the inside is too loud.

Boogie Fever Cafe and Disco- Not much to say about this place. Minimal talent, but its also a spot for MILF lovers. Older crowd.

One-eyed Bettys- Not a venue conducive to gaming per se, but if you're into beer there's a great selection here, with good food as well. Good place to start your night, as its close to all the venues worth going to.

Grasshopper- Dance spot that plays techno, haven't been.

Bosco- Tried going later in the night, but the bouncer wanted to charge cover near closing time so I passed. According to my friend, a lounge with a great patio for when its warmer and good talent. Also a good place to ring a chick. From the outside looking in has cool interior decor as well. I'll check this spot out at a later date.

For eating also check out Imperial which has great Mexican food(especially the tacos) and drinks. Go to Como's if you like pizza. Como's stays open until 4, so that can be an alternative to driving to the Coney Island's in RO after the bars and clubs let out.

Great report. You didn't miss much of the fair. Its just whole bunch of paintings, pasta necklaces, and candles. I've got to check out John D that Betty's place, where are they? I always meet some thuggish lesbians at Orchid. Their patio has its own bar and no cover. Grasshopper has awesome music, but every time I've been there it's empty and there is a $10 credit card minimum. Bosco is my favorite by far. It gets crowded and loud, but the patio is fantastic. I hear Thursday is their European night.

The only decent strip clubs are Penthouse and Coliseum on 8 mile and possibly that one place in Greektown. Michigan ave has like three of them, but they are all nasty. The one right next to the highway with a sign "no biker colors" on the door has girls that offer "extras".

Thanks man, you'll get a mix of everything in terms of crowd at Orchid, but there are decent chicks in there sometimes. I may check out Grasshopper and Bosco this week.

One-Eyed Betty's is actually behind Orchid, next to the post office just off of 9 Mile and Woodward. The address is 175 W Troy Ave, Ferndale, MI 48220.

John D Bistro is on Woodward across from that same post office in Ferndale. It's easy to miss if you're just driving through Ferndale, I had actually never noticed it until I saw people spilling out one day after being at Rosie O'Grady's. Address is 22726 Woodward Ave.

I've also heard good things about some spots in Dearborn and Novi, so I'll add those whenever I get around to heading back over to those areas and documenting the spots properly in addition to Ann Arbor, which I'll visiting regularly now that school is back in session.

Nice, first datasheet I've seen about my city/hangouts. Personally, I think Ferndale is too full of lesbians/gays for my taste, especially Orchid. I like Piano Bar, O'Tooles, and D'amato's in Royal Oak. The Liquor Store in Novi isn't bad, neither is Elektricity in Pontiac .What do you think about The Works in Detroit? Easiest place to swoop in my opinion. I'll be hitting up Club Bleu in Detroit on Saturday night to check it out, they're throwing a Halloween banger that doesn't close until 4am.

I've never really noticed alot of gays in Ferndale at night, although you are most likely to see them at Orchid. Never been to The Works and I am rarely in Detroit city limits for the nightlife, except for going to V Nightclub a couple times this year in the MGM. How much is the joint at Bleu? I pass it all the time but have never been. Any other recommendations for spots in the city?

Truthfully I don't really go to the D too frequently. And when I do go it's either to Old Shilaleigh or The Works. I'm hitting up Club Bleu for the first time this Saturday, so hopefully it doesn't disappoint. It's $25 to get in at the door.
