Backpacking Africa

After conquering Europe, Asia and South America, it is time to move on. So the question is pretty straight forward: anyone with experience backpacking in Africa?

-Is there a gringo trail type of route that everybody follows?

-Would it be stupid to travel alone in Africa (unsecure or the possibility of being lonely - normally it is quite easy to meet people on the road) ?

- What countries would you include in an Africa trip?

- It seems there is consensus on the forum that the most beautiful chicks come from Ethiopia, but are there other stunner countries out there? And is 'shoring' the only way to go, or is it possible to meet non pros?

Thanks in advance.

Backpacking Africa

I have only been to Southern Africa (South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Botswana) took me around 3 weeks. Search the old threads I did a data sheet about it. The thing about Southern Africa is that transportation is a slow and expensive. Outside of South Africa buses don't leave everyday and you can be stuck in some shit hole for half a week waiting for the next bus. I had to hitch hike in Botswana. The good thing is that everybody does it so its not that big of a deal. Also, accommodations can be a problem, you either staying in a luxury "lodges" paying at least 200 a night or a hotel in a township with no running water. So you'll be burning through money like a drunken sailor in a whore house. Your best bet is to go with a "travel group." you are basically in a converted truck with 15 other tourist and drive around and camp at night. The tours last anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 months. I don't like being driven around like cattle with other whinny tourist but the silver lining is that the ratio is like 1 guy for every 7 girls and a lot of this girls were hot. I ended banging a mud turtle from Scotland who was in one of these trucks and she told me that the driver of the truck literally fucked almost all the girls on the truck except for her cuz she wasn't a "slut." LOL. As far as the local talent is concerned, you can have any color women you want as long as she's Black. The locals girls gave me no play whatsoever even when they knew I was from the US, I have a feeling that White playas might do better. I was going to do the Cairo to Capetown trail but the recession put a stop to that. Africa is by far the most expensive place I have traveled to. With regards to HIV just don't rawdog anybody over there and you'll be ok.

Thanks for the replies!

I was hoping that somebody could tell me more about countries like Ethiopia (from what I read on this forum it seems pretty cool), Eritrea, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya?

Then there seems to be a western tourist circuit including Senegal, Gambia and Sierra Leone.

Come on guys (naughty nomad??), enlighten me with your african tales!

Africa is a fucking mess man...if ain't war - congo, chad -it's pirates/militias sudan, ethiopia, somali, if it ain't curreny destruction - zimbabwe it's slow rebuilding after major chaos rawanda, liberia, sierra leone, uganda...honestly outside of South Africa, Ghana, Nambia, Kenya - africa ain't shit to fuck with...beautiful continent - but the aids rates and the chaos (war, poverty, militias) just kills it for me...try Cape Verde..I heard that's growing as a hot spot/tourist destination...

Hey Beebopaloo,
Firstly, Africa is the business!!! You will have more stories on one trip here than years of traveling in other parts of the world. Ethiopia is probably my favorite country I've visit (Philly a close second).

From March to June, I hope to travel The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cote d'iviore, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Benin & Nigeria. I'll lash out a lot of info then.

In my opinion, Uganda, Zambia and Namibia would follow Ethiopia in turns of people, girls and general fun. Kenyan People are a wee bit colder than there neighbors. Generally, there are FUCK ALL tourists in Africa in comparison with other parts of the world. It's easy to get off the beaten track and have an adventure. You will have fun, trust me.

Now that I'm more experienced, I'd recommend different tactics for picking up girls in Africa. Day game and internet game will eliminate the need to shore. In many cities the nightlife is pretty seedy, but some of the girls in African nightclubs will blow your fucking mind. Where you go depends on time... How much time do you have?

Awesome info, Naughty Nomad. Sounds like you are up for some wild adventures.

I am thinking about travelling around for 2-3 months and then staying one place for a couple of months to get to know the culture better and write my thesis. That could be cities like Addis or Dar Es Salaam, but I need to research those places a bit better before I am able to tell.

From what I can gather, Eastern Africa is the most convenient in terms of tourism and infrastructure of the 'black' africa, and also where the hottest birds are from. (I like dark skinned girls, but probably not the blacker than black ones of western africa).
South Africa I have heard is an interesting place as well, though the crime and AIDS rate seem to be out of control.

I am on a pretty tight budget - how is Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia in that sense? Also would you suggest me to go there with a buddy/wing or will I be able to meet cool people on the road (..hostels)?

It's a no-brainer man - ADDIS!!!
Just be prepared, travelling from Kenya to Ethiopia involves 2 buses and an 18 hour journey balancing on top of an armed convey, on the worst road in history, in bandit country. It's fun, fun, fun!

How is Addis in terms of lodging? Any good, kind of social hostels?

Or is it preferable to get a short term furnished apartment?

From what I can read on your blog, Ethiopia seems to be the place!
