I remember making my mom cry that morning. She burst into my room long before the hour before I usually waked up.

Mom: You have to wake up! Diana is dead!

Me: Who's dead?

Mom: Diana!

Me: Who???

Mom: DIANA!

Me: Who????????

Mom: DIANA!!!

Me: I don't know any Diana!

Mom: DIANA!!! DIANA IS DEAD!!! DIANA!!!

Me: WHO THE FUCK IS DIANA!?!

Mom: DIANA IS DEAD!!! DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT DIANA!!!

Me: WHAT THE FUCK, WHY DID YOU WAKE ME UP???? WHO IS DEAD???

...this went on pretty long before my mom started crying and left. I got up to watch the news and figured out that Diana was the princess of England. At school it got repeated, apparently a lot of girls found it impossible to believe that teenage boys don't pay enough attention to middle aged princesses to remember their names.

Other than that the only news stories that made me actually remember the actual moment and the day when I heard about them are the sinking of MS Estonia and 9/11.

5th - Raul Reyes killed in combat. As a brief member of the Colombian army, we never thought this was possible. Imagine the Osama kill for you all.

4th - The Armero tragedy. 22000 people killed in a single night.

3rd - The Japan earthquake.

2nd - 1991, first Russian presidential election. This is my second country, so such a thing really meant a lot to us.

1st - The death of Pablo Escobar and the saga leading up to it. We lived barely 5 blocks from where he was killed. Just before he died, he went on a brutal car-bomb rampage detonating no less than 8 bombs a week, in addition to the price he put on every policeman's head. You literally started being afraid of parked cars. The ramifications of his death and what happened before it set off a chain of events that will haunt this place where I grew up for at least 50 years more.

I'm not sure if "important" is the best word for these, but the below ones are clearly memorable. Those pieces of news where you'll always remember where you were/what was going on, even if they aren't as significant as other stories.

No particular order:

9/11

Princess Diana dying (Parents sat me down to tell me, as if a relative had died, and that was the only non family member where they did that)

Bush's re-election (I had just gone to an anti-bush protest shortly before, and you could almost feel students become more cynical/apathetic that night)

O.J. verdict

Operation Desert Fox (Buddies mom had us watch it on TV, first distinct memories of seeing nighttime air strikes with that green night vision glow)

1) September 11th

2) Fall of Vukovar, Croatian homeland war

3) Election of Barack Obama

4) 2011 Tohoku (Japan) earthquake/tsunami

5) 2004 Indonesia earthquake/tsunami

In general, the personal importance of these events depends mostly on age of the viewer, not significance. I recall being absolutely shocked by by scenes from Vukovar, even though I was a child at the time. My aunt tried to prevent me from watching but it was too late. Nowadays I'm looking at the shit going on in Syria and reading about Holocaust and Khmer Rouge, and it disturbs me but doesn't shock me anymore because, as an adult, I'm more used to such things.

Even though I'm european

1. has to be 9/11. My dad was in a meeting with the head of the FED and his security advisor stopped him mid sentence and rushed out of the room not to return. My dad called me saying something major must be going down in America, maybe at the stock exchange. I turned on the TV and there was talk of a small aircraft possibly having hit one of the world trade center towers, then I spent 11 hours in front of the tube from 2 pm to 1 am CET.

2003 Iraq invasion commences. Far more predictable this, but just the whole experience of watching war live on TV via the "embedded journalists" was unreal.

I don't actually recall the exact day of the berlin wall or desert storm beginning but I knew both were meaningful. I knew Tschernobyl was bad but no one actually knew what was going for days and weeks after, so there was no one big announcement. I remember Norman Schwarzkopf declaring victory.

boxing day tsunami. My dog woke me up at about 5 am that day and the bbc had something up about a 9.something magnitude earthquake in the pacific. I thought to myself if that doesn't create the mother of all tsunamis, what will. And it sure did.

11.3 japan earthquake and watching the smoking reactors a day after.

I vaguely remember the Berlin Wall falling and Yeltsin speaking from a tank, but these are the five earliest newsworthy items that I remember vividly (as in, I remember everything that was going on) in order:

1) Ross Perot being a viable candidate and visiting my state at the time; I saw him in person

2) Vladimir Zhirinovsky throwing rocks at Jews from over a fence shortly after his party took plurality control in the Duma elections. I vividly remember my social studies teacher being scared shitless at the possibility of Zhirinovsky overtaking Yeltsin for control of Russia.

3) Kerri Strug sticking that landing on one foot

4) JOHN STOCKTON SENDS THE UTAH JAZZ TO THE NBA FINALS - I was a huge Stockton fan

5) 9/11 - "And they will follow that path all the way, to where it ends: in history's unmarked grave of discarded lies"
