For the well traveled here, what would be the best town (at least 1,5-2 million inhabitants) in Former Soviet Union to learn Russian for one year?

A town that would not be too expensive, that would have a good quality of girls and easiness of hooking up (Not too much stigma given to girls dating foreigners) and also a reasonable climate.

Reasonable climate and Russia in the same sentence is an oximoron. [Image: wink.gif]

That picture really puts in perspective. Is that St.Petersburg, Moscow or somewhere else?

I would think a place like Krasnodar or Sochi offer the best weather in Russia itself. If you're feeling more exotic perhaps Alma-Ata or Tashkent. The feedback on here for those places has generally been positive.

Does it have to be Russia? How about the Ukraine? I heard pretty good reviews about Yalta and Odessa in the Ukraine, although I've never been there. The climate in Crimea is better than pretty much anywhere in Russia. In Russia, how about the Black Sea coast? Sochi, Anapa, etc? I went to Anapa when I was 5, so obviously can't tell much about poosie availablity[Image: smile.gif], but I would consider that part of the country too.

It doesn't have to be Russian but I don't want to go to Ukraine to learn Russian because I heard they speak a bastard version with many Ukrainian words in it.

Sochi and Anapa sound nice but does anybody have more info about these places, from a player's perspective?

Belarus.

Cheapest place to study Russian in a purely Slavic country ( you can study in Central Asia cheaply but the locals are harder to mingle with and hence harder to get outside practice and also they bastardise the Russian - I speak from experience of having studied Russian there ). Is the climate great? Nope but the women are sweet and feminine.

I'm doing the same thing as you at some point this year so pm me if you want to ask any questions.

I wouldn't worry if i were you. Their Russian is good enough. It's like one Russian guy I know didn't want to go to Canada to learn English because he wanted to pick up a British accent. I'm like, no, my friend, don't worry about it, you won't pick it up regardless from a 2 month language course.
