Buying candles as an opener

Buying candles as an opener

This has happened to me several times in a row now, so maybe someone can take the idea and expand upon it.

When I go to the grocery store right down the street from where I live, I occasionally buy candles to leave burning while I clean the apartment so it doesn't smell bad. Without fail when I buy these fucking things, the female cashier opens me.

Cashier: "These smell good... how much were they?"
Vitriol: "Actually they're the cheapest ones you guys sell... 99 cents"

How to proceed from here? I'm pretty sure this is a universal female reaction that can be utilized in many retail settings.

I dunno, girls have a better sense of smell, no harm asking their opinion if it gets them talking.

At the very least your place will smell nice.

I'm of the opinion that trying to figure specific openers for every little interaction is harmful to my rhythm because it comes off as stale and canned. Not to say it doesn't work for others, but I stick to simple, digging questions such as "what do you specifically like about the smell?" or "does it remind you of anything?"

"You ever get thwm for your apartment? It covers up the smell nicely!" With a smirk.

She'll probably laugh, and you might be able to gauge if she lives alone or with her parents based on how she responds to the term "apartment."
