These posts and threads always make me laugh.

There are many studies on ideal proportions, another one is found, but yet people want to debate on being able to find your own ideal proportions.

The problem with the op post is it simply says "shoulder width". That's not the answer. It's shoulder width relative to your hips.

Mesamorph, ectomorph, whatever doesn't matter. You just build appropriately.

1.618 times your hip to hip waist measurement (assuming you are low body fat) is your ideal shoulders for those that care.

Yeah, I did a post a while back on the "golden ratio" between the waist and shoulders. Forget the exact ratio.

Guys bench when they should be doing more later raises and other shoulder building exercies.

And lots of back work (hammer strength back machine is the best) to pull your shoulders back and give you a good posture.

Been bulking which means my stomach is wider. My ratio is off and the looks for girls have dropped noticeably.

When dieting down, I can tell when I've hit the right weight. The looks just start coming more and more frequently until they hit a critical mass.

Just like me are into the waist-hip ratio, so are women into the shoulder-waist ratio.

Sorta blows away all that dorky bullshit that, "Women are not visual creatures."

Spend a lot of time on this:

Builds up back and rear delts and makes you wide.

Pull it all the way back. If you can't (most can't pull it all the way back, due to using slobby form over the years and thus they lack structural integrity of the back and shoulder girdle areas), have a training partner push it that extra inch.

If no training partner, lighten the load. It's more important to get full range of motion and to hold the contraction.

Hold the contraction for 1 second.

On your last set, hold the contraction for as long as possible and do a super slow negative. A 30 second negative is great.

That builds up your entire back structure in a way unlikely to cause injury.

Have you ever noticed 2 things are most fashion experts?

1. They are major advocates of layering.

2. They are skinny.

1 and 2 are related, though they might not consciously realize it.

Fashion is meant to make skinnier guys have the illusion of being bigger guys.

If you're a bigger guy and follow fashion rules, you end up looking like a stupid blockhead with a square physique.

But if you're skinny, layer, layer, layer. She wont' know any better until the clothes come off - and by then it'll be too late.

Also agree with mike, if you need "shoulder pads" $1,000 says you're skinny. The fashion designer you go to should be recommending no shoulder pads because you are too big. If you wear padded shoulders and are in shape you will look like a box and get 0 benefits from suit game.

Guys with strong shoulder to waist ratios should wear:

henleys
v-neck shirts
slim-fit shirts
slim-fit sweaters

MikeCF is right though, guys who work out a ton but never cut and bring down that BMI just look fat to chicks. Despite putting in grueling hours in the gym, guess what? That skinny dude who's layered up like he's about to go bang Iceland is going to look better to chicks.

This times a million. I love hitting the sauna (childhood stuff and all). I take off my shirt to let it dry.

Since hitting the gym regularly, girls in the sauna visually scope me out MUCH harder than before. Its a great motivator.

Girls are funny...they think they are being sneaky, but they just haven't ever learned how to "sneak a peek".

It takes a couple of hours to get your ideal ratios.

But instead people would rather say "he looks small to me" or he looks "fat to me". Lolz at them.

Just put me in front of any group of people at least one will say "you look great".

Easier to make excuses than realize your metrics are fucked. Much harder to look in the mirror and realize you are several inches away on multiple body parts to your ideal.

What's interesting to me is how shoulder width can affect your punching.

If you zero shoulder width, and rotated your body to swing a punch, the only weight that would go into the punch would be from you fist.

If you have wide shoulders and you rotate your body into a punch, you are putting you entire arm and chest into the punch, making it more massive.

They definitely are visual, but I think they have a different set attributes in a mate than what we are looking for.

You are right about fashion. I actually feel kind of naked without a good jacket on. This is one of the reasons I'm trying to build up a little.

I think a lot of rockers where biker jackets because it immediately makes you look tougher.

Word. Get it big and rip it up.

My formula for wide shoulders starts with my warmup. I don't pick up a weight til I do at least 3 rounds of pull-ups and dips.

I start my first round of pull-ups real wide palms facing out. 2nd rd I do palms facing in Chin ups close grip. 3rd round close grip palms facing out with works traps nice. All my pull-ups are dead hang and I always touch my chest to the bar. This engages all muscles and will give you that nice v shape. (Broad shoulders skinny waist)

When I lift I do clean and press and sumo high pulls will get your traps nice. Any exercise where you are picking something up from the floor and pressing it will get your traps nice.
