I am bored with my current selection and I want to hear some new bands.

Any suggestions? Anyone?

MUSIC RECOMMENDATIONS?

I pretty much don't like any music today. We call it 'new' but they're all simply retro or a reinvention of the wheel. It's a little disheartening for me to think that no one is really doing anything original or fresh. My personal feeling is that nothing significant has come out of music since the early 90's. Around the late 90's the music industry has simply plateued and has been on that course ever since.

Usually, you can map significant impacts in music history and they tended to happen every ten years up to mid 90's. Now it's just a flatline with no sign of anything significant to come. I think one of the last few good bands to have emerged is Cake, but I'm not entirely sold on him.

These days I'm listening to classical. That's about as retro as you can get, but I'm digging it because it doesn't sound like any popular music out today. So in that spirit it's different and new. There are some interesting transitions though. I think Classical offers something for everyone. If someone is goth/emo then Chopin and his allotment of nocturnes would probably turn them on. If someone is into pop they might take a liking to Dvorak.

Co-sign on Dro. He's criminally under-rated, even by cats that like Southern rap.

M.I.A--> Cd is called Kala. she's got the illest beats by far and i mean Kanye's sampled her shit pretty hard on that "swagga like us" song.

Justice--> Cd's called Cross. It's pretty ill in general. both of these cds are abt a year old but i mean if you're not on it, it's still fresh to ya. ill beats, some futuristic shit. Not really feelin the radio these days, rap's dead to me...xcept for Young Jeezy, i guess.

Just want to dig up this old thread so that I can mention Nic Jones. He is England's finest folk musician. He made an album in 1980 called 'Penguin Eggs' which many consider the best folk album of all time.

Sadly he was in a car accident soon after the album was recorded - and hasn't played the guitar since.

Anyway - I just want to give it a shout out since his music is so catchy and wonderful. He has a unique style of guitar playing which adds to the pleasure.

The following is his signature song:

My other favourite Nic Jones songs are COURTING IS A PLEASURE and PLANXTY DAVIS. Just in case any of you want to dig into his music some more.

Old Cool Jazz. Miles Kind of Blue. Zawinul's self-titled album. Anything without synths which are always so much tonally simpler than physical instruments.
