One Way Ticket To Mars
Interesting stuff. I wouldn't want to do it, but I can respect and understand those that would. I wonder how many of us would even qualify for this, even if it were something we wanted. I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't.
To be fair, the Army doesn't have the most stringent screening process. In fact, I'd venture that recruiters tend to do quite a bit of bottom-feeding.

I'm willing to bet there would be multiple suicides on the flight to mars. Guys kill themselves after joining the Army for an enlistment of 4 years.

To be your own man is a hard business. If you try it, you'll be lonely often, and sometimes
frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." - Kipling

Could you imagine spending 7 months with the IRT asking if there are any white girls on Mars?
I'm all about adventure but living on Mars isn't on my bucket list. The thought alone is a little scary to think about.

A sucker is born every minute..
People have this all backwards. Exploring and settling new places here on earth is seen as sexy since it brought new land, wealth and glory to the explorer and his tribe/nation. But the glory is dependent on there being real value. There is NO value to be gained by a human colony on Mars, other than scientific peacocking (as the moon landing). So maybe China will do it to show us who's boss. It's like building a pyramid or a gigantic temple..
You want to do scientific exploration? Robots. You want to mine in space? Robots.

In related news.. "China lands on moon, kicks off next lunar space race"
Perhaps this will rustle some jimmies in the space exploration departments of other nations and get them moving on this project

Let the modern moon rush begin. China has successfully placed a lander and rover on the lunar surface, the first time any nation has touched down there in almost four decades.
China's first moon landing, which took place on Saturday afternoon (GMT) marks the rekindling of humanity's love affair with our only natural satellite. About a dozen robotic landers and rovers are on the drawing board for launch between now and 2020, many from burgeoning space powers or private ventures that would also be making their first attempts.
This flotilla of 21st-century moon explorers should arrive bristling with technologies that will help them map the moon's uncharted regions and prospect for resources that could one day sustain lunar outposts and missions further afield.
