Second-grader suspended for chewing his pastry into the shape of a gun

Quote:Quote:

A 7-year-old Anne Arundel County boy was suspended for two days for chewing a breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun and saying, “Bang, bang”— an offense the school described as a threat to other students, according to his family.

The pastry “gun” was a rectangular strawberry-filled bar, akin to a Pop-Tart, that the second-grader had tried to nibble into the shape of a mountain Friday morning, but then found it looked more like a gun, said his father, William “B.J.” Welch.

Quote:Quote:

a letter was sent home to families Friday and is posted on the school’s Web site.

In the letter, Myrna Phillips, assistant principal at the school, informed parents that a student “used food to make inappropriate gestures that disrupted the class” but said no “physical threats” were made and no one was harmed.

If children are troubled by the incident, Phillips wrote, parents should “help them share their feelings.” In addition, a counselor will be available to students, the letter said. “In general, please remind them of the importance of making good choices,” she wrote.

Yeah, I heard about this on the radio here. Absolutely insane. The father is appealing. Of course the school has only women in charge.

Fucking ridiculous.

Read the rest of the article. Kids got suspended for pointing their fingers like guns, a girl talking about her hello kitty bubble gun.

The dad asked for the reference of guns to be struck from his record and the principal said it couldn't be done...

I think the story has been updated in the past day or two. Something tells me lawyers are going to get involved.

I think they already are. I'd be inclined to file a law suit alleging sexual discrimination, as well as a bunch of common law torts. Then I'd seek discovery of this teacher's employment records to see what I could dig up. I don't think teachers have qualified immunity, so I'd also consider filing a separate or concurrent civil suit against her personally. It would cost them tens of thousands of dollars at least to even deal with the filing.

Again another attempt to prevent kids being kids, boys being boys.

I'm absolutely sick to death of this constant demonization of boys in schools.

The recommended section is full of these:

Considering it's a Constitutional right, you'd figure that the schools would actually do more to educate the children on firearms rather than suspend the children for even mentioning them.

The teacher clearly wasn't attractive enough to hold the boy's attention.

When I have kids, there is no way I will be sending them to the local feminist factory

I'm glad, and I can't see why you guys aren't happy about this news.

He could have KILLED someone with that pastry! What if he'd gone and shot up all the other kids? YOU GUYS would be responsible becase you think it's ok for someone to MAKE GUNS on a school property.

You are basically child KILLERS! all of you.

(I've read too many "Toronto sucks" comments in the last hour or so)

This.

What a load of crap. I was a mass murderer by the time I was 6. I had a whole goddamn box full of guns and plastic ninja swords. I was a fucking warrior, defending the world from every stray lizard and grasshopper that crossed my path. Those lizards still tell horror stories to their grandchildren about the day I got a BB gun.

In related news school DISTRICT gets shut down because a kids voice mail is the fresh prince of bel air song and she mis-hears it as"shooting people outside the school" instead of "shootin some b-ball"

I think if I have a kid I'll keep him/her homeschooled.

American schools are pretty much like prison now.

Nope.
