Should non users be able to see our profiles?

Sometimes I look on other forums and click on a profile and can't see it but I just logged off here and can see all of ours.

The reason is anyone who knows your user name can see all your old posts which I think couldn't be good.

I agree. I think if someone who knew me would see my threads they would recognize me. But it's not very likely in my case though.

I'm not overly concerned about it myself, however I can see why some guys would be.

So no, I don't think they should be able to use that function.

Many forums also block the search function of unregistered users.

Even if profiles weren't viewable it would be very easy for any RVF stalkers to sign up on the 1st of the month and immediately start skimming your posts.

Also, you can search for a user's posts quite easily using the Search via Forum feature. Just type in any username in the appropriate search block and hit enter.

Most people aren't on the ball enough to wait till the 1st.

I worry about this too from time to time.

I agree it should be blocked unless you're a member. Ditto the search feature.

Agree with this, or at least it should be a switchable option.

I've always found such forums a huge turnoff. You have no way of seeing a bit of someone's background or even previous posts without registering, so it makes it even harder to see if a forum is some kind of circle masturbation or a place with actual participants.

You should be able to tell this just by reading a few threads no? I get what you're saying, but I do think the 'privacy' issue is a concern for many here. I guess there are pros and cons for both.

I second having some sort of more secure, "hide from the browsing public" function. I don't like the idea of leaving a paper trail of personally identifying details for the whole world to see.

E.g. I'd do a datasheet on some local spots, but I will never be more than vague about my location as it is now.

Make it feature people can activate and you're good to go.

Agreed. Guests shouldn't be alowed to see profiles or search. Hell, I even think they shouldn't be allowed to browse the forum. The forum is already an established community, but thats just my opinion.

Lets say your boss sees you here over your shoulder he can go right back to his desk and read how you raw-dogged his secretary by clicking your profile and going through your old posts. If not he can browse for your posts get bored and stop. He's not going to wait till the first to go through the motions. Also people we troll can click in and have way too much background by searching.

I'm with el mech on this.

RVF is indexed by google, and you can find a particular user's posts by searching for, e.g.
Code:
Code:
site:rooshvforum.network "el mechanico"
However, why would anyone know your RVF username? Why would anyone, ever?

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

so you "brain surgeons" created a thread asking for more privacy than you outline in detail all the ways for random visitors to look up members information and posts on the forum and in google for all readers. Nice job guys.

As long as I can google my username and my real name in conjunction and have nothing pop up, I'm ok.

However, I see no downside to blocking profiles off to a non member.

The forum shouldn't be indexed by Google, and private profiles is a bonus.

Thanks for showing those that are not computer literate how to do that.

It doesn't seem like a huge reveal. If someone wanted to search RVF for a username and wasn't computer literate, why wouldn't they just search by username using the search function on the forum?

It's the principle and common sense. Don't talk about wanting more privacy and security settings and than discuss how to figure shit out.

It's the principle and common sense. Don't talk about wanting more privacy and security settings and than provide a diagram on how to find things on here.
