I'm Tired of the False Rape Coolade

My attention was recently captured by a misleading graphic that minimizes the comparative problem of false rape accusations by showing only a small percentage of rapes are punished. The biggest visual problem with that graphic is that most rapes are committed by serial rapists, an average of six per offender. So even if all rapists were punished, there would still be far fewer defendants than victims. But whatever, I searched the web for evidence. I was particularly annoyed at Wikipedia for suppressing a widely cited study by "McDowell 1985". This study is pretty obscure, but I eventually got a copy.

Guess what? The McDowell paper does not say what all those web pages say it does. There is just an echo chamber of mens' rights websites parrotting things about a paper they haven't even seen. These guys don't care about the truth, they are only citing McDowell to provide pseudoscientific justification for their preconceptions. There may exist some decent evidence about high rates of false rape accusation. But the manosphere can't even supply correct references. I don't trust false rape advocates.

Could you summarize the findings of the McDowell 1985 study?

as far as I can tell

Quote:Quote:

Dr. Charles P. McDowell of the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations led a team that investigated 556 rape allegations. The initial research categorized 220 of those allegations as true, 80 as false, and 256 as inconclusive. When they announced their initial results, they’d categorized 46% of their data as inconclusive. This strongly suggests that their approach was cautious and objective. Advocacy researchers know the answer they want before they even start. It’s unheard of for advocacy researchers to announce that the largest portion of their data was inconclusive.

The McDowell team then did a followup analysis. They recruited three independent reviewers to evaluate the inconclusive cases based on a list of criteria that were common among the women who had acknowledged they lied. (See below for an example of the sort of criteria that were used.) In order for any of the inconclusive cases to be recategorized as false, all three independent reviewers had to agree that it was false. The end result: 60% of the 556 rape allegations were determined to be false.

That's why when you started a thread saying, "We Should United with Feminists About Rape," I thought you were trolling.

These people do not define rape the way you or other sane people do.

Getting in bed with them (hah) on any issue is a terrible move on our part.

You're calling one study bullshit by citing a bullshit infographic?

This is very simple to clear up - just post the McDowell study in total, or a link thereto. I briefly tried tracking it down, but didn't find it. It's definitely plausible that people are lying about its contents.

I couldn't find it either, only summaries and interpretations on websites of varied political natures.

I dunno, the problem with the "False Rape Kool-Aid" is that I've known a lot of guys who were accused of rape who just got drunk with the girl and they fooled around, then she regretted it the next morning. If you're one of those guys who has a one night stand and then you just tell them under no uncertain terms to get the fuck out of your room the next morning, does it count as rape? I've known that to happen before. One of my friends was accused by some girl who was blackout drunk and passed out in her room; at the beginning of her tirade, she claimed it was a dream and that there were two of my friends in it. Towards the end of it, she talked herself into believing that it actually happened with my buddy, then the campus police got involved and my buddy got banned off campus. I know both of these people and I still don't know what the fuck to make of it.

Haven't we already discussed this infographic?
Hasn't the main stream media, the people you folks generally hate, already dismissed this infographic as malarkey?

I think Divorco has a chronic case of rape autism that flares up periodically. Not sure what triggers the episodes, though.

I'm not even sure what he's calling for in this thread, and I read it twice.

I think what he wants us to do is re-evaluate our positions about false rape accusations instead of relying on horrifying accounts of anecdotal evidence.

The problem with that is that the definition of rape changed quite a bit in the last thirty years, so most people don't even know what it means any more. The fact that there are any false rape accusations at all marginalizes actual rape victims.

I'm only going to give a shit about the "rape culture" when feminists start giving shits about cuckoldry and how it affects men. That shit can be proven, something like 15 to 20% of all kids are illegitimate, which doesn't account for women who fuck around on their husbands without getting knocked up.

What you may not realize is that with a lot of these 'false rape accusations,' the girl does genuinely feel traumatized and violated. If she truly had been raped, she'd feel the exact same way as she does now. Not all false rape accusations are filed by cunning, calculated bitches. At least some girls feel they were raped, when really, they just abdicated responsibility and then they refused to accept the consequences. Just saying this all because this monolithic image of false rape accusers as conniving harridans is false.

Of course, feelings =/= reality, so the fact that she feels she was raped is irrelevant, in comparison to what *actually* happened. We know girls consider their feelings the very height of truth, that there is no objective reality beyond their feelings; so they may think they were raped with extreme conviction, because that's how they *feel.*

You don't trust false rape advocates, but you trust feminists? You gotta be kidding me.

I don't know how much of a problem false accusations are, but I sure as hell am not gonna trust some feminist claims about it.

Bravo basilrandom.

It sounds to me like Divorco is saying that the manosphere is fighting back against rubbish studies by citing their own rubbish studies, and that he's tired of this crap flying around and hitting everyone in the eyes.

I think we're all with him on that note.

I guess we won't be spared feminist infographics even at RVF. Not sure why you have a thorn up your ass about this. Do we have a society where men are presumed innocent and women are presumed liars because of all this bad info floating around? No, but we do have countless anecdotes of men being arrested and/or convicted on the basis of the rantings of some maladjusted shrew because society assumes these delicate flowers must be genuine victims. They squirted out some tears after all so somebody must be punished. See e.g. http://www.rooshvforum.network/thread-21116.html

I'd go so far as to say that it doesn't matter if the studies showing high numbers of false rape accusations are correct. You don't change society by making the best arguments or having the best data. You do it by screaming the loudest and having the best propaganda. If these guys get traction with their studies and it leads to people questioning the honesty of women "victims" more often, it is a good thing.

I spent five minutes looking into it. It seems there is only one physical copy in existence - in an FBI library - and that nobody has ever digitized it. If you're at a university you should be able to put in an interlibrary loan to get your hands on it.e is

If you do (Divorco?), take some photographs and upload it. There are literally hundreds of people who want to see it.

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

He got temp banned before he could explain. He explained it to me but I didn't understand it. I think he was trying to say there's no real data that's supported on any end.

Like others even I am not sure what the OP is trying to explain. However, there is claim on the other side (our side) that men are falsely accused of rape. This is not just based on a study but this is based on news and what we hear and see on an almost daily basis now (not mere anecdotal evidence). There have been countless threads posted by members of girls getting caught by the police and even in Canada I have read many stories in the last two years where women accused men of raping them for a variety of reasons. The most common one is that the woman is already married or has a bf and doesn't want him to find out.

Shit, "To Kill A Mockingbird" was about a woman who felt great shame at wanted to get reamed out by a one-armed black guy, so she concocted this story that she had been raped and he was hanged for it. False rape allegations cannot be new.
