Floyd "Money" Mayweather VS Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero

Quote:Quote:

Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero finally got the fight he wanted.

The Gilroy welterweight will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 in a Showtime bout, probably at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, promoters announced Tuesday. After years of chasing big-game names such as Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, Guerrero landed the biggest name of all.

"I'm ending your career on May 4," he said in a tweet directed at Mayweather, "so start saving that MONEY."

Mayweather, who turns 36 Sunday, is 43-0 with 26 knockouts but hasn't fought since defeating Miguel Cotto on May 5, a span that included a two-month jail term for domestic battery.

Guerrero, 29, the WBC's interim welterweight champion, has a record of 31-1-1 with 18 knockouts.

"People are going to see why Manny Pacquiao avoided us and why Juan Manuel Marquez avoided us," said Bob Santos, the man who has served as Guerrero's trainer since the fighter was a teen. "Floyd better enjoy that undefeated record, because he has two months to go and he's going to get that first loss."

Richard Schaefer, an executive with Golden Boy Promotions, didn't discount the possibility of an upset. He said Guerrero has a strong chance because he is younger, "fast, strong, extremely skilled and has an amazing chin."

At the same time, Schaefer said: "Mayweather feels it is going be an easy fight for him."

It's a big fight for Mayweather, who ended a 23-fight association with HBO on Tuesday to sign a six-bout deal with Showtime. Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza, in an interview with USA Today, called it the biggest deal for his network since signing Mike Tyson in his prime.

Thoughts?

I need to watch the Guerrero VS Andre Berto fight again, but I think this is a dangerous fight for Floyd.

Minimal upside for him, except his is fighting a Mexican American near Cinco de Mayo.

Guerrero if I recall correctly, roughed up Berto bad. Which is basically what you need to do to Floyd. I will also have to figure out who is bigger. If Guerrero is bigger, Floyd will be tested hard.

Guerrero is the same height (5'8"), reach might lean to Mayweather. He also has a similar career track, won his first belt at super featherweight.

He was impressive in the Berto fight, but Mayweather is a different type of boxer. To beat Mayweather, you have to win at least 4 of the first 6 rounds. It's damn near impossible to beat Mayweather when he has 5 of the first 6 rounds banked and can just shoulder roll his way to a decision from there. I don't expect an upset but that's why they fight.

I really wanted to see El Canelo Alvarez face Mayweather. I just think Guerrero took the easy fight and opted for Guerrero instead.

The first time I had ever heard of Guerero is when he fought Andre Berto. I watched that fight assuming Berto would beat this no name cat. Berto eventually got his ass whipped on the ropes all night getting roughed up. I don't think Guerrero will be able to do that to Floyd tho. Floyd is a suprisingky good inside fighter and is way slicker than Berto was. Guerrero will just get shoulder rolled and countered all night if he tries to muscle Floyd. If Guerrero stays on the outside and attempts to use his jab he may have somewhat of a shot. He has a pretty decent jab. However, I think this fight will look much like the Adrien Broner and Antonio Demarco fight. Guerrero will get frustrated by not being able to touch Floyd, which will make him want to try to rough Floyd up, which will work to Floyd's advantage since he'll shoulder roll and counter all night at that point.

Floyd's game relies on reflexes and speed, which decline no matter how good shape you're in. You could be the fittest athlete on the planet, but your reflexes and speed will decline. With bad boxers, this is accelerated with damage taken. With good, or supreme, boxers, this happens naturally with age. Floyd will eventually meet his Antonio Tarver, and if you're into boxing, you'll know what I mean by that.

Of course, he could avoid this, and it certainly isn't Pacquiao. Pacquiao would have been counter-punched all night, whenever they fought, but his speed could have made him get in with a lucky punch. But it's unlikely.

Anyway, I fuckin love boxing. I just with they'd have one champion per division, but it's never going to happen.

All I've seen from Guerrero is a typical aggressive mexican fighter. I don't see Floyd losing. And Teedub it catches up to you if all you rely on is your reflexes ala Roy Jones Jr. a smart fighter like Mayweather is only losing if he gets caught hard someday from some fluky shot.

El Canelo is fighting on the same card as Mayweather in Las Vegas in May. If both Mayweather and Canelo win in May, they are supposed to fight each other in September. Canelo is supposedly going to fight Austin Trout in May, although Trout recently said that he hadn't even been contacted to fight Canelo. Canelo will have his hands full with Trout and if he loses, he may very well ruin his chances to fight Mayweather in September or at any time.

As for Mayweather v. Guerrero, I see Mayweather winning pretty easily. First, I think Floyd is at his best at 147. The two times I have seen him take some punishment were in the Cotto and the De La Hoya fights, both of which were fought above 147. Second, Guerrero has almost always fought below 147 and against smaller guys than Floyd. Third, although Guerrero is a southpaw, Floyd has much better overall skills.

In any event, I have every intention of being at MGM Grand for both the Canelo and the Mayweather fight in May. There is no way that I will place a bet on the Canelo fight. Although I am pretty sure Canelo will win, Trout has a pretty good chance in that one and I definitely don't want to take the risk. Straight bets on Sergio Martinez, Peter Quillin, and Danny Garcia on one Saturday, and a straight bet on Floyd on the following Saturday. Horrible odds, but little risk.

RJJ wasn't exactly a stupid fighter though either. He's still my favourite fighter to watch on YouTube, along with Prince Naz. However, I read a study about Mayweather punch stats. It was about how often he connects, alongside how often he gets hit...

It was extraordinary. His stats were levels above every other fighter in the list. The only fighter that was left out was Welterweight-version Sugar Ray Robinson, as it just wasn't available. Apparently, as good as he was at middle, he was even better at Welter, so we'll never know, but Mayweather is up there.

I'll try and find the study, it was fascinating.

Mayweather is not a fighter, but a boxer to the fullest. Also he is a master promoter becoming the bad guy(an over exaggerated version of himself) in almost every one of his fights. People always want to see the bad guy lose and will pay $64.95 for an HD broadcast to do so.

I like this matchup, because Floyd haters like to say he doesn't challenge himself. There are some that will still express disappointment that he isn't fighting Pacquiao, but I'm not. Guerrero WILL be a great test for Floyd. I like when he fights aggressive fighters that bring to him. I think it brings out his best. Guerrero REALLY roughed up Berto, but Berto played into that because he's a bit of a brawler. Guerrero held and hit, but Berto had no counter for it. He's a poor defensive fighter.

I know Floyd is getting older, but I don't see him as a normal fighter. None of the things that age fighters really apply to him. He doesn't take beatings. He has a low punch output, so he hasn't burned himself out. He never danced around and moved that much. He takes incredible care of himself, in that he doesn't balloon up between fights only to have to struggle to make weight. Technically, age does get you at some point, but I really haven't seen significant slippage in Mayweather. Cotto marked him up a little because he sat on the ropes and simply let Cotto bang away. I expect him to win, but I'm still excited about the fight. I think it'll be a good one because Guerrero can only win by TRYING to rough Mayweather up.

Roy sacrificed the end of his career when he moved up in weight to fight John Ruiz for the heavyweight title. He packed on a lot of muscle, then had to lose muscle to get back down to light-heavy. It's hard to lose muscle - it weakens you. He didn't give his body enough time to re-adjust and harden back up at the lighter weight. He was still drained, and a shell of himself. He still tried to fight with the same unorthodox style as before (hands down, pulling straight back to avoid shots, etc.), but with shot reflexes. He got hit with shots by Tarver and Glen Johnson that he NEVER would have gotten hit with before. You simply can't do what he did at that age (moving up and down in weight), and have near the same speed and reflexes.

True but Roy never had solid fundamentals. Just look at him compared to someone like Bhop.

MAYWEATHER SR. TO GUERRERO'S DAD: "WORRY ABOUT WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN TO YOUR SON AND YOUR ASS IF YOU RUN UP ON ME"

By Percy Crawford | February 26, 2013

During a recent interview with FightHype.com, Floyd Mayweather Sr. let it be known that Robert Guerrero isn't the only person who may be in trouble on May 4 now that he's back in his son's corner. "Guerrero is gonna be in trouble if he thinks he's kicking my son's ass, and like I told the reporter that came into the gym the other day, I don't give a fuck how old his daddy is, if he get out of line, I'll kick his ass. So my son gonna kick The Ghost ass and if his daddy get out of line, I'm gonna kick his ass," Mayweather stated, making it clear that he had no problems with stepping to Guerrero's own father should he get out of line during the promotion of the fight. Naturally, Guerrero's father, Ruben, took offense to the comment and wasted no time to respond.

"We can go in the parking lot, me and him, and let's see who's walking back. I'll kick his fucking ass, him and his son. I can meet both of them in the parking lot. I don't need Robert. I'll kick both of their fucking asses. That fucking ass will go down. They want to heat it up, I'll heat it up," Ruben Guerrero replied in a recent interview with Rick Reeno of Boxingscene.com. "I'm 30-0 in the barrio, knocking fools out. I'm undefeated in street-fighting. I'm a street fighter bro. They brought him in because he's a band-wagon. I've been with my son since he was five years old. My son never treated me like a piece of shit on TV like his son did. That guy don't scare me. He ain't shit to me."

As you can guess, it didn't take long for Mayweather Sr. to respond once he got word of Ruben Guerrero's comments. "Wait until we get to the press conference. We gonna see, because I wish that motherfucker would call himself swinging on me. They can close the door because I'm gonna put his ass on the floor. He don't need to worry about what happened between me and my son. Worry about what's gonna happen to your son and your ass if you run up on me. I wish that motherfucker would call himself coming up on me. I don't know where he was shot at, but I bet it wasn't worse than when I got shot. I'm gonna break his ass down, so I hope he didn't get shot in the body," Mayweather Sr. fired back. "Then again, I'm gonna hit him on the fucking chin anyway, so it don't matter. Motherfucker was talking shit about Lil' Floyd and that ain't gonna go down. He say he fucking 30-0 in the streets? He can get ready to be 30-1 because I don't fuck around. I will be 60 years old on March 15th and I bet you I will break any motherfucking 50-something-year-old motherfucker down. It don't matter how old he is. I will be at all the press conferences and when he see me, he better be ready. None of that street talking shit scare me, motherfucker. He better check my reputation. Like I said, they better close the door and give him room to fall if that motherfucker get in my face, because I'm gonna whoop his ass and you can mark my words on that. Watch what I tell you. He getting into some shit he ain't ready for. This was the most exciting call I could have got, Percy."

If anyone has a shot at beating Mayweather, it will be Canelo in September and I still see Mayweather winning that fight. The odds will be decent because tons of Mexicans who live on both sides of the border will be betting on Canelo.

Does anyone know when tickets will be available for this fight? As of two hours ago, this fight was completely absent from the Ticketmaster website. My plan is to find out when they go on sale and five minutes after they go on sale head to the Ticketmaster outlet which is across the street from my office and pick up the best tickets I can buy. Otherwise, I'll probably be stuck trying to get into XS at the Wynn to watch the fight. Believe it or not, I couldn't even get into the XS to watch the Martinez-Chavez fight. I had to nervously sit at the Parasol Up and follow the fight on a blog on my phone.

Saul wont be fighting on the same card. I rather watch Saul than Mayweather plus it will be cheaper. I dont know about these fights. I am kinda nervous on both. Floyd is due so why not G to take the fight. I loved Berto and I believe Berto has more power than Mayweather and I dont think Berto put G down. Berto defense is weak. I think I'll go Mayweather just to cover my Trout bet. I want Saul to fight Mayweather. Then Saul to fight Martinez before he retires.

I might see the Donaire vs Rigondeaux. We should plan a meetup.

Sidenote... G have you ever flipped fight tickets before? It might be to late but wouldnt that be a quick lick or not worth he trouble? My boy went to a Mayweather fight last year. Was told it was sold out only to find out there were selling tickets at the box for cheaper than what he paid for. Let me know your houghts?

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

That makes absolutely no sense. Since Compubox (spelling) has been used, Mayweather has the distinction of being the boxer of any weight class who other boxers have landed the lowest percentage of punches on. Is De La Hoya's logic that Guerrero will land more punches on Mayweather than Mayweather lands on Guerrero? I realize that the amount of punches landed is not the only factor which goes into a decision, but does De La Hoya honestly believe that Guerrero will outland Mayweather? Everyone who steps into the ring has a chance and I actually see Guerrero taking a round or two from Mayweather. Miguel Cotto took two, or argueably three, rounds from Mayweather and it was considered by some to be some huge triumph. Mayweather 118-110. No knockdowns. I'm being somewhat generous in giving Guerrero two rounds.

If Floyd lies on the ropes and just lets Guerrero punch himself out, the fight could appear closer than it actually is. This is what he did against Cotto, and he actually got touched more than we're used to seeing him touched. At the same time, it's hard to land SOLID shots against Mayweather. He'll give you some body (picking off a lot of it with his elbows), and pick off pretty much anything that comes upstairs. Floyd gives up some early rounds simply because he doesn't throw a volume of punches, but as his opponent either tires, or exposes holes, he steps up the attack as the rounds go by. Guerrero presents and interesting challenge, but I expect Money to win by unanimous decision. If you look back at how he fought Oscar, he followed that plan - lay on the ropes and let Oscar bang away early, then start tagging him when his arms got a tired.

This is a good point. I watched the Mayweather-De La Hoya fight a few days ago and at one point in the fight, it looked like Mayweather was letting De La Hoya land quite a few body shots in a short period of time. In actuality, he was picking a lot of them off with his elbows and not really getting hurt by them.

Exactly.

He blocks those body shots.

He dominated De La more way more than most people realized.

Just like Pernell Whitaker did.

I was pissed about the Whitaker fight.

I had money on Pernell. I knew he was going to win.

I didn't account for a robbery to take place.
