Where Should I Move?

It is kind of strange how little love New Orleans gets on this forum especially since it is so cheap.

It is one of the most unique cities in the world with some of the best food and nightlife at a discount.

I was born in New Orleans and still have some family down there so yes, I know what you're talking about.

My problem with actually living there are two things:

1. The weather is fkn terrible. That humidity makes me want to walk into a walk-in freezer and never come out. Sticky shit.

2. For some reason, I don't know the answer and of course this is biased having lived there, is there is a certain vibe of chillness that doesn't bode well with me. Lack of motivation on alot of people down there to better their lives.

That being said it's an absolute blast to visit and we have some smokin girls who will suck your dick and talk about how much they like it with that sweet southern drawl.

Alot of my friends are BUYING brand new HOUSES in Vegas and they make like $50k a year.

How much are these homes?

My room mate in Medellin just bought a 2 bedroom condo for $35k last year. You can earn pretty good money there as well depending on the industry you work in.

Charleston is fairly affordable, except when it comes to real estate. Rent is fucking high. If you want a nice 1 bedroom downtown you are looking at a grand a month. You might be able to find something cheaper in Mt Pleasant.

Las Vegas is pretty cheap. If you like to gamble you can get most of your meals comped. When I lived in Vegas I played poker everyday at the Venetian while eating free smoked salmon. There isn't any state income tax in Texas, either.

Columbia, SC isn't bad. A big SEC college right at your back door is always nice. You can go out in five points a few times a week and not even come close to breaking the bank.

Florida and Texas don't have state income taxes either.

Atlanta is cheap and you have a lot of colleges around there.

Cities I would consider if I were in your shoes:

New Orleans
Las Vegas
Tampa
Charleston
Columbia
Austin

Shit, just go check them all out over the course of 6 months and make your mind up.

Errr I meant Nevada, obviously.

I came super close to moving to New Orleans about 6 months back. Unfortunately it never panned out.

I think the pros far outweigh the cons when it comes to New Orleans.

Best of all there is no last call, so you can snatch a bitch at any hour.

If I moved to New Orleans would I have to shell out to live in the french quarter because of logistics or is there a cheaper just as good option?

So much love for Tampa, definitely have to consider it.

35K for a condo in Vegas? that is awesome.

Yeah, houses are mad cheap in Vegas. My pops house is worth 200k and it's ill. 4 bedroom 3 bath, huge great room, huge back yard (Though it was all just dirt when he bought it). I think he bought it for 180k or somewhere around there, it went all the way up to being worth 500k, then back down again to about 200k. The market really took a dive in Vegas when the economy crashed. And not just that , they over built the shit out of Vegas. It (well technically Henderson) was the fastest growing city in the nation for a while. Vegas is most definitely affordable for a 45k a year salary. I was sharing a 1600 sq ft. 3 bed, 2 bath house in a nice area with friends and I paid $400 a month for my room. Total it was $1200 a month. A buddy of mine was staying in a 5 bedroom in a very nice area with a jacuzzi and weekly lawn service for $1500 a month.

I don't doubt that you can buy a two-bedroom condo in Medellin for $35,000, but I would bet money that it is not located in a very desirable area like El Poblado, Laureles, or Las Vegas (Las Vegas, Medellin, not Las Vegas, Nevada).

Oklahoma City is cheap and decent. The economy there is thriving due to the energy industry.

Oklahoma City is a good option and is rarely mentioned on this forum. It's the only decent place which I saw between the Jersey Shore and Southern California. It's cheap, there are jobs, and the people are very friendly. The Bricktown district is very nice. The only downsides are early last call and not the greatest (although not the worst) talent. Tulsa is a whole other story. I went there and was in what appeared to be a downtown area at about 5:00 P.M. on a Friday. There was absolutely nothing going on in the place.

I agree with what's being said about Las Vegas. Take a look at the real estate that you can presently buy there for $200,000, $500,000, or $800,000.

I don't know I'll have to ask him, I'm meeting up with him here in Peru the 19th and I'll let you know. I feel like he told me it was somewhere near blue diamond area. Even in Miami you can find foreclosers for 30k.

Oh well, what can you expect for 35k.

Yeah, for me it's not that bad, I lived way the hell out there in BFE about 25 minutes from the strip. But if he was talking about blue diamond rd, that's close to the strip. I'll have to ask him tonight, I'm meeting up with him here in Lima for dinner.

In Miami, I think it was Kendal that my friend bought a house for $35k. He had to put some work into it too, but now he rents it out from like $100 a month. Only 3 years to get your return back, not a bad deal.

The most you're really gonna find that's affordable in South Beach would MAYBE be a 3 bedroom, but SoBe is mostly shitty studios. With your bankroll, you aren't gonna be living large in south beach no matter what way you look at it, even with room mates unless you plan on sharing a room with someone. If you don't want to live in Miami, you're gonna have to live off the beach if you want a nice house. Otherwise you will be able to pull it off in a shitty studio, but you'll be paying minimum $800 a month, probably closer to $1000 though.

Perspective.

I think that is actually really f*cking low.

And you probably wouldn't think the place was "nice". Downtown Charleston can be pretty pricey unless you live in a dump, a bad area or with roommates.

The other drawback to Charleston was that airfare is expensive b/c they have such a small airport and so few airlines there.

Also, it really, really helps to have a boat. boat culture is massive there.

Thanks for the insight. I'm going to plan some weekend trips to check these places out. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the thread.

Big downside to Vegas is the weather pretty much always sucks. It's pretty much always too hot or cold. You get about 3 months of nice weather a year. That said, you also get 300+ days of sunshine a year. Also, it might be a pretty big culture shock depending on where you are coming from.

I lived in Vegas for 3 months, from August to end of Sept. It really is the city that never sleeps, even more so than New York City.

I am South Carolina and I prefer the weather in Vegas over that of the Southeast. It gets hot in Vegas, but there is no humidity at all. In a place like New Orleans it will be 98 degrees out with ridiculous humidity.

You just have decide if it's something you can deal with.

I am in a similiar situation and debating between cities. I was thinking of Miami but the tax fraud gang has me worried. Articles make it sound like they steal mail from many people and file tax returns to get tax refunds. Does this sound ridiculous or even possible about tax returns?

I would day game mostly I think I wouldn't hit up the Miami nightlife and lose most of my money.
Which city has more superficial people? I had more experience in Vegas and think it's less superficial but I also saw less job opportunities. Can anyone elaborate on the economies besides real estate?

How about foreigners? I think Miami has more foreigners especially Europens (I know this because I have some Russian friends there) living there (not tourists) as opposed to Vegas.
