511's are excellent for built guys. They really show off that you've been doing your squats and working out. Wear them with a Henley or t-shirt that shows you're working out and it's a cant miss look.
I actually buy the 511's 2 inches too long and the cuff them up over the boot I'm wearing. I'll throw up a picture of what I mean when I get the chance.
I've received many compliments from girls and guys with this look.

Levi's 501 shrink to fit is perfect alternative to 514, once washed the leg opening should slim down some giving you a better look. I find the 514 a bit unflattering down at the ankles.
If you want to drop down on some good shit, APC new standards are real nice. These a both raw denim and might not be everyone's cup of tea btw.

Get hold of said jeans
Go into changing rooms and look in the mirror.
Now here is the secret:
Look at yourself witout preconception or expectation: ask yourself:
"Does this fit me? Am I comfortable wearing this? Does it convey the right message about me?
Not sure enough in yourself? Take someone who's taste you trust to help.
Do NOT take advice from the forum on fit as gospel. Quite the opposite.
Apart from general guidelines, disregard any specific advice about fit. Your body is the true judge.
ps Vintage Levi's rock. To get comparable quality to yesteryear, your looking at $200 plus, most likely from a Japanese artisan brand.

If you're willing to drop a little bit more coin, try some Naked and Famous jeans.
SkinnyGuy or SlimGuy, depending on your preference.
Ever since I've started wearing raw jeans, I can't go back to washed.

APC New Standard are solid if you're into the selvedge thing although they take awhile to break into(~2 weeks).
