What do you guys make of this cat Macklemore?

[Image: Macklemore++Ryan+Lewis+png.png]

A 29-year-old hip hop artist from Seattle that raps about accepting same-sex marriages, shopping at thrift stores, and having a big dick. And he's blowing up right now.

On paper, he's a disaster, but 125 million total Youtube views and a #1 single on the Billboard 100 can't be wrong. Or can they? Is this the nail in the coffin for American hip hop, or does his talent stand on its own?

Typical upper middle class kid from a privileged background whose identity issues and inability to define himself led him into hip hop, yeah one of those douche bags.

As a Seattleite, I feel the need to tell you all that he's not supposed to be taken seriously. He's always made silly rap music.

I'm afraid we may be witnessing the birth of an unfortunate new musical genre: hipster-hop.

What I find interesting about the duo is the fact that they've been successful without being signed to a major music label.
They're the posterboys of making music independently without seeking or giving a lot of creative influence to the big music labels. They found their niche of making silly music, did it on their own, and now they're making bank.

I was talking shop with the squad, and we were talking about when we came up, this could not have happened. This dude was ~15 when Slim Shady dropped, so it's about time for more of these guys to make noise.

I am also from Seattle. He's been pretty big here for a few years now. I never really jumped on the bandwagon because I listen to mostly rock, jazz and older hip hop but I get the same vibe Huck Finn was talking about. I could be wrong but I think the silliness is just to hide his own identity issues. Also I think this type of hipster/indie rap is watering down the genre as a whole and taking away from what it used to be, which is disappointing.

I like thrift shop - the lyrics are clever, funny and FRESH. What modern rap can you relate to anyway? The typical lyrics are invariably some ghetto or ghetto-wannabe dude talking about weed, drugs, bling, guns, broken homes or 'partying.' Or fucking Bruno Mars - any dude who takes away airtime from that pussy is a saint. I'll take the dude making fun of people wearing $50 t-shirts over the myriad rappers talking about how they spend money so their girl will love them.

Of course the song has been played to death so I avoid it now.

Don't hate on Macklemore.
only unsigned person in a decade to hit number one.
Doesnt talk about the stereotypical rap shit. cars/money,bitches.

If you read/listen into him..he went through his drug/chopped an screwed phase.
That rap has its place...and he doesnt fit that image.

He makes alot of corny(but decent songs like American and Thrift shop)
But he makes music, he's lyrical.

it's not like he isnt aware that he isn't black

Unlike the vast majority of the newish hip hop artists, he does make proper music, has his own style and is not some artificially created shit. Can you record a rap album home-studio-style, hit no1 and tour the world? Gotta respect that. I like him.

"Wings" is another good one.

Macklemore's music is good enough to distinguish him from the thousands of other hipster rap acts (hipster rap is hardly new), and it has put him in a position to compete against rappers with major label deals and multi-million dollar production teams supporting them. His music is catchy, and some of it's got a conscience. Yeah, his lyrics have a sense of humor, but that doesn't mean they aren't to be taken seriously. He's got my respect.

Women love this dude and he'll definitely make money off his image. But do I care about his music and/or do I think he's talented?

I think he's talented but his music does nothing for me or as far as I'm concerned it doesn't do much for hip hop.

I'll stick to that Sean P shit:

I'm revising my opinion.
Went back and listened to more of his songs and I think hes doing some good stuff. It takes hard work to have a number 1 album on an independent label so he deserves respect. I don't agree with everything he says (although I don't agree with everyone on everything anyways) but I also think hes got some good ideas and adds some of his own flavor to his music that is different and unique. Plus, he also reps my city so gotta give him a nod for that.

Am I the only one who noticed the singer on "Thrift Shop" sounds like Nate Dogg?

He has an awful song about basketball, after I heard that I pretty much never bothered listening to him again.

You must be really young or don't/cant ball. Getting your first pair of Jordan's or baller shoes back in the day was like your dream come true and made you think you could play like Jordan. You cherished them and were too scared to wear them and like he says just wanted to "leave them in the box"...plus his "Awful" basketball song is this years Allstar song.

As opposed to "legit" rap which has devolved to exclusively talking about weed and white bitches?

single, hit number one on the Billboard I think. They are probably making bank due to being unsigned, they'd receive more of the money than if they were at a major
