Insanity Workout

A friend just gave me his Insanity Workout DVDs. Pretty awesome since they cost 150 bucks. He got them for Christmas and said he was never going to use them.

http://www.amazon.com/INSANITY-60-Day-Co...B002QZ1RS6

Anybody here try the whole 60 day program? Looks like a serious high intensity interval training program. I am trying to get under 10% body fat so this might be the thing for me. It would also save me a bit of time if I didn't have to commute to the gym and could workout in my living room.

Some folks have gotten success with it and others haven't. My advice is to get your diet locked in, then try out the insanity program.

Everything you do is built around a good diet.

If you're looking to lose weight, do it for a week. If you gain weight after a week, cut calories. If you lose weight, you're good to go...stick to that diet.

Either way, make sure you do some sort of strength training to supplement it. Even if it's all bodyweight workouts(pull ups, pushups, etc...)

At cricket training today during one of the fielding drills, one of the older guys said something to one of my teammate's kids

"Why are you puffing young fella? If I can do this, you can"

I thought I'd throw in my little bit "because he's working hard"

His response? It went something like

"Dieting would be less work than this..."

People don't seem to understand that exercise and diet go hand in hand. One is essentially useless without the other beyond going from morbid obesity to being just overweight.

I don't know why, but every time I'm helping my dad out with his excavation business and I have to dig a hole, the older guys always try to outshovel me and they end up fucking up their backs and spraying dirt everywhere. Then they'll tell me that I'll "end up like them" if I keep strength training and that I shouldn't lift things because it'll destroy my joints.

I just remember being 10 or so and getting ridiculed by the older guys for being a weak little shit. That's probably one of the biggest reasons why I lift.

To answer the OP, one of my friends did the insanity workout and he said it wasn't a bad program, but I take what he says with a grain of salt because he probably just got leaner over the summer and his lifts didn't make any appreciable gains.

Most of the before/after pictures on amazon look like they just got leaner. Interval training is good, but you can achieve great results with just sprints.

I did the P90X which is similar. It's pretty good at keeping you motivated and going by mixing up the different themes. Now that I think about it, it's pretty amazing that I stuck with it as long as I did. You'll definitely get leaner if you keep your diet locked down. However, you may lose muscle if you're coming from strength training.

If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.

It's a really good workout for the average person just looking to get a workout.

Diet is more important in terms of losing weight.

It's similar to P90x. It's more of a gimmick than anything. It works fine if you're a newbie or a woman looking to tone up, increase core strength and lose weight. Avoid it if you want to actually increase any real muscle.

How is doing a shitload of situps, pushups, and pullups a gimmick? That's pretty much all P90 is. The gimmick is charging people that much for this stuff...but it's like having a trainer in your living room to motivate you and for people that need it that's worth something I guess...

EDIT: you're right I proved your point - it's good for what it is.

I have a friend who has done quite a few cycles of Insanity. He is very cut up with a six-pack. Of course he watches what he eats and follows the diet plan. Now he is bulking up and doing Body Beast to gain mass. He plans to cycle between the two. So for him, I'd say it has worked pretty well.

You realized you just proved my point.

I'm not knocking the program, it's good for what it is. For newbies and woman looking to loose weight and tone up, its a good program. However, if you need a mentor in the form of DVDs and are willing to pay a premium price for it, I'd have to question your motivation a bit.

I assumed the guys on this forum are not woman and likely want to build a lot of muscles then Insanity and p90x is not for you. If you're looking to build any real muscles, you need free weights and proper mass gain diet.

If you are just trying to get toned an shed some weight insanity should be fine. Like other said watch your diet as well. I did the p90x for almost 2 months. Then around the second month I got out of the shower an looked at myself in the mirror an was like "damn look at my sexxy bah-dee" So the very next day I was all pumped up from seeing good results an used more weight then I should have for the work out an hurt my back... My back hurt for a year... still hurts in the same spot sometimes if I sleep on it wrong or do alot of heavy lifting I can feel that spot get a little uneasy.

The programs like that are good cause you have a trainer pretty much to tell you what to do, if you arent very disciplined your not gonna make yourself a work out routine thats gonna push you every day.

What draws me to it (besides it being free in my case) is the convenience. At the moment I dont have easy access to a quality gym with a good set of free weights. So working out at home has a big draw to me right now. I am aware I will not be getting swole with this program but I could definitely stand to lose some body fat.

It comes with a nutrition guide which mostly just includes a lot of recipes. It advocates eating 5 times a day and allows you to eat carbs and dairy. I wanted to try the Paleo Diet but I live in Asia and avoiding rice at all times is nearly impossible. So I will give this a shot

A few days ago, saw the commercial for it and I got impressed. Mind you, those commercial for work out programmes do not impress me much but I don't know, there was something in this programme that made me think, this might be different and I'm considering getting it. Has anyone else in here bought it and gone through the programme?

I've just finished my martial arts and weight training, the gym was setting me back £110 a month, now before I leave london for a few months travelling I need something to keep me fit, I'm not for going to one of these commercial gyms so I may look at P90x or Insanity just to keep me fit, I do sports too and a lot of sprint training anyway.

I did some P90X in college and then again last summer for a while. It's fun and worth it if you're not going to work out otherwise. The kickboxing dvd is crap, but the Ab Ripper X is always fun. For the life of me I cannot get through the damn yoga one. Run 10 miles? No prob. 2 Hour kickboxing class? Sure. That damn yoga dvd? I'll make it 20 minutes before I call it quits.

Like previously mentioned a few times above, Insanity leans you up but doesnt actually add too much muscle, if any. Looking at some of the before and after pics on the commercials, the majority of guys who used the program actually looked somewhat weaker IMO. I know a few people, both male and female who have used either Insanity or P90X. Based on what I've seen from what they looked like after completing the programs I can honestly say that Insanity should be used if you ONLY want to lose weight and arent worrying about putting on a good amount of muscle. If putting on some muscle while losing weight is on your agenda then P90X is the way to go. It might take a few cycles depending on your body fat but you'll get respectable results sooner or later.

Just to add to the p90x thing. You use weights for alot of it so you can go heavier weight lower reps to build bigger muscle if thats what your going for.

Been doing the workouts for about 2 weeks now. My thoughts so far:

1) The cardio is incredibly intense as advertised. I am dripping sweat on my living room floor by the end of every session (except the recovery workout day). I have not sweat this much in years.

2) The moves are all easy to do so far. Nothing complicated at all.

3) Trying to stick to 5 meals a day like the nutrition guide recommends is getting difficult. When you work a lot and have a social life its hard to get your eating schedule to be so rigid.

4) My knees are hurting me in a way I have never experienced before. Its not preventing me from going hard in my workout but its slightly annoying. I will put some cushioning insoles in my shoes this week.

5) I don't notice any change in my body yet but its only been 2 weeks. I do feel somewhat stronger and my heart is pounding a lot less at the end of the workout today than it was 2 weeks ago.
