Here's a list of good sites to listen to live radio stations from Brasil for anyone interested. These are of course, in Portuguese, little to no English will be spoken on these stations, obviously.

http://musikcity.mus.br/radiosdobrasil.html
http://delicast.com/radio/Brazil
http://www.blindradio.com/online-live-in...azil-br-0/
http://www.surfmusic.de/brasil.htm

Since I'm partial to Rio, there are some quite good statiosn there for typical Brasilian music. I also love listening to football matches with Brasilian commentaries. They are just awesome!

Perhaps Chocolatinha can post/suggest some good/cool radio stations from SP with quality Brasilian music?

More modern, less bossa nova. B music is not only this.

Who are the top artists that Brazilians are listening to right now? I know many of them listen to American stuff like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Beyonce, but who are the most popular that are from Brazil? Most Americans are only somewhat familiar with classic classic Brazilian artists but really have no idea what is going on down there now. I also get the feeling that a lot of the nu-Bossa music Americans associate with Brazil like Bebel Gilberto and Sabrina Malheiros is made mainly for American consumption.

If you're talking about Bossa nova, the masters are in no particular order:
Jorge Ben Jorge (very chill, mellow and best stuff to relax to or to play when you're with a nice girl, open the windows, let the cool breeze get in the living room, have a good quality bottle of red and or white wine handy, some good food and start playing a Jorge Ben Jorge cd and you're golden![Image: smile.gif] ).
Tom Jobim
Caetano Veloso
Chico Buarque
Rosa Passos (not in the same category of those listed above her, but still very good).
Milton Nascimento
Roberto Carlos aka O Rei; he is to Brasilian music what Pele is to football, the King. (He can also be put in the Brasilian Pop; he's got loads of very beautiful romantic songs). A must in other words.

I LOVE Brasilian music and Brasilian music is IMHO one of the most varied and amazing music in the world.

I love most Brasilian music "genres", specially those:

Samba
Jorge Aragao (amazing songs)
Martinho da Vila ( incredible poet, if you like deep and beautiful lyrics, he is the man)
Beth Carvalho

I also am a HUGE carnaval fan, those I love samba de enredos, specially those from the Rio samba schools.

Pagode:
Zeca Pagodinho (the current king of Pagode)
Dudu Nobre (has some good songs)
Esaltasamba
Fundo do Quintal (love their "hoje eu vou pagodear", download it, you'll love it too)

Axe:
Chiclete com Banana (awesome awesome group!!!!).
Asa de Aguia (similar to Chiclete but not as "wild")
Netinho (has some cool songs)
Ivete Sangalo (the current queen of Brasilian Axe and MPB, Musica Popular Brasileiroa or Brasilian Pop; not only she's hot but has awesome songs. Try to go to one of her concerts, you'll have a blast; she'll have a US tour this summer, with concerts in Miami and NYC; if you're around there, you can't miss her, she's worth every penny of it!).
Daniela Mercury, awesome Axe/MPB singer with loads and loads of very cool songs.
Claudia Leite/Babado Novo (she's HOT HOT HOT) and she can sing a mean song too!
What else? Chocolatinha, feel free to add more as I'm sure I'm forgetting some good ones.

I also enjoyed forro a lot, specially when I was in Fortaleza. Very nice sexy music to dance to. On the plus side, when you go to a forro club, specially in the North East of Brasil, you'll be garanteed to hook up with a bunch of girls. Garanteed! That dance/music is the shit!

If you spend time in the North East, specially in Para, you'll get to discover and truly enjoy another type of music, called Calypso. Very upbeat, very cool to listen to and oh so sexy to dance to. Google/Limewire it and you'll know what I mean.

There's also Sertanejo, the Brasilian country music. I don't listen to that type of music much but there are some cool ones, namely one that is quite catchy and is a good one, by Rio Negro and Solimoes, the song is called "na palma da mao". (I'm sure you know this one hey Chocoloatinha?). Btw, check the Sertanejo clubs/bars and parties as these places are packed with mega babes dressed to kill and the typical cowboy hat. Awesome places to check. Specially in the interior of SP, Goiania, Minas and Brasilia. I highly recommend to check a Sertanejo bar/lounge/party. You won't believe the quality of women there.

And last but not definitely least, Funk (pronounced Funkee). Quite dirty lyrics, straight from the morros/hills of Rio. Packed to capacity with horny, easy and sexy chicks but also loads of thugs some with guns and kalachnikovs (sp?). If you get the chance to catch a Baile Funk, specially in Rio, don't miss it. But make damn sure you go there with a LOCAL that is known to that area.

Vacancier,

Você é pagodeiro então? hahahaha
Jorge Ben is not quite Bossa, is more MPB.

I like Exalta, Jorge Aragão, Fundo de Quintal, Beth Carvalho, try some Leci Brandão, Cartola, Turma do Pagode, Nwance... So many!
Axé: I love Ivete! I went in her show in Morumbi. 70 000 people. It was sick despite the short duration due to a summer rain. She was opening Beyonce's concert. Have you gone to a micareta? Carnafacul or something like that? I haven't yet, but someday I will. (it is a little bit expensive and I wasn't in the mood before)
Babado Novo and Claudinha Leitte are fine, but I rather Asa de àguia e chiclete com banana.

Sertanejo
Villa Country! OMG (contry club) I miss so much you have no idea.
I like sertanejo, I was used to go to villa country. Now, in SP until august we have rodeos (the biggest one is in august, Barretos). If you are around you can't miss it! it is a blow of beautiful people and ride competitions...
To get it started:

* Rio Negro e Solimões
* Jorge e Mateus
* Edson
* Luan Santana
* Bruno e Marrone
* Teodoro e Sampaio
* Maria Cecilia e Rodolfo
* Tchê Garotos

Forró
Do you know the name forró came from the II world war, the American had a base in Northeast and used to promote parties "for-all" people and the locals couldn't say for - all and it turned to forró. =D
I don't listen much, but is divided to some rithms itself:

Brega: songs about love.
* Léo Magalhães
* Tayroni Cigano

Arrocha: to dance veeery close... lol
* Latitude 10

Technobrega
* Calcinha Preta: voce não vale nada mas eu gosto de você
* Calypso
* Frank Aguiar (the keyboard dog)
* Caviar com Rapadura

Funkeeeee
Butchered Portuguese. You can dance when you are drunk enough to it.
* MC Catra
* Bonde dos Havaianos
* MC Menor
* Bonde do Vinho
*Deise Tigrona
* Tati Quebra Barraco
* Gaiola das Popozudas

Forro and Sertanejo are horrible. I like Bosa Nova a lot, especially bosa nova mixed with trip hop. Seu Jorge is good, especially his work with theivery corporation. Pedra Branca is really good, but I don't think very popular. Brazilian hip hop/rap is sick.

Some good hip hop I can think of right now...
MV Bill
Planet Hemp
Racionais MC's

I must say I didn't get into the music as much as I would have liked to. I have super picky musical taste and usually don't listen to the radio (Like things played on the radio from the 90's a lot though) or anything played in the clubs very often. I listen to all sorts of different types of music and play 4 instruments though, so when I say I'm picky, I don't mean not into lots of different music, just have to have the right sound. A lot of the kids I was with in Brazil were more into the pop music scene, so I just didn't get much into it. My friends in Sao Paulo are kinda hippie kids with similar music taste to mine. They listen to all types of music, and they showed me some good stuff, but I didn't stay with them long enough to really get a good idea.

You sound like me. I love a wide variety of music but I'm very picky about what I listen to. I tend to not like pop and I think most Latin American pop sounds god awful cheesy. That's why I'm all about the traditional Latin music, the salsa, the bossa, the samba, the tango, the mariachi or whatever, as long as it's the traditional stuff and not the Americanized sounding pop crap. There is this pop artist from Chile I like quite a bit though - Jose Vasconcellos. Haven't dug into the Brazil hip hop scene. I can't get into the Brazil Funk music, but that's probably because I'm almost 34 and I can't see that shit appealing to anyone over age 25. I love a lot of the 60-70s era Brazilian music like Flora Purim, Airto, Gal Costa, Deodato, Arthur Verocai, Joyce(who is still making amazing music), Sergio Mendes, some of the psycadelic stuff like Os Mutates and Os Brazoes was interesting as well. I'm a big fan too of the contemporary Brazilian artists who are breathing life into the traditional stuff, like Sabrina Malheiros, Bebel and Ceu. Then there's the deep house music that incorporates Brazilian styles and I'm a big fan of that.

Hmmm.... I'll have to check some of that out. I also like Samba as well. I like a lot of Latin American artists that don't necissarily play Latin American music. Federico Aubele is one of my favs. but it's not really Latin Music, kinda more trip hop/psychodelic I guess. I'm also real into Smoke City, but she's actually from England with Brazilian parents. A lot of the CD is in Portuguese. It's more of a basa nova mixed with trip hop sound. Good shit. I wish my volume on my computer was working right now so I could check out some of those artists you mentioned.
