True- this has happened to me as well. Which is why, if I'm going to try to bang an average looking girl, I won't be seen with her at my regular haunts. All it takes is one girl who knows you to see you with a lesser girl and she will inform other girls in her social circle ("I saw XY with this girl Saturday night-ewwww!") and they will all deny you.
However, the opposite is equally true- being seen with a hot girl greatly raises your desirability with other girls. I think dudes have to stop trying to put game in a box, as if things can only work one way and under certain conditions. Game, as it pertains to women, is fluid, thus it requires one to adapt to a myriad of situations and factors within those situations.
